Introduction
It is our honour to present the narrative report of the 6thParticipatory Community Leadership Development Course (PCLDC) 2019, organized by AAS Pakistan in partnership with the Asian Health Institute (AHI), Japan, to present to our key stake holders. PCLDC is an effort of AAS Pakistan and AHI Japan, to build the capacity of community development workers in Pakistan, and to promote participatory approaches/strategies and tools among community development workers with the objective to strengthen local community development leadership at grass root level in Pakistan. The report is a reflection of the activities, proceedings, attitudes, behaviours, and efforts of participants, facilitators and the organizing team of PCLDC 2019, in the accomplishment of the set objectives of PCLDC 2019. It also highlights the role of the participants as co facilitators, moderators and volunteers in different activities.
Key characteristics of the PCLDC 2019; Sense of ownership of PCLDC by LIFE Alliance; The members of LIFE Alliance (The
Alumni’s of ILDC and PCLDC) volunteered their services in the organizing of PCLDC 2019.
PCLDC 2019, provided the participants a platform, where participants were able to explore their personal leadership qualities, abilities and skills by taking different roles, such as facilitators, management of different event, moderation of different sessions, preparation of their presentations etc.,
Daily Morning Prayer& personal reflection, recap, session feedback, sharing personal learning and preparation of their presentations, provided the participants an opportunity to reflect on their personal, knowledge, attitudes and skills, to take decisions to improve them, modify them or change them.
It was a clear demonstration of interfaith harmony, the participants from different faiths were living together, praying together, understanding, appreciating and accepting each other’s religious, cultural and family values and allowing them to practice it as they want. It was a wonderful experience for all participants and organizers.
Daily presentation preparation evening meetings of main facilitators and co facilitators was an excellent experience for the participants where they were able to learn about presentation preparation and performance skills, it provided the participants and facilitators to closely work together, it increase the moral and confidence of the participants the co facilitators.
Daily Review Committee Meetings were held after the training sessions, the committee was consisted on the next day session facilitators, moderators, the management team, and the representatives of the participants. It was an opportunity for the organizing team and facilitators to review the outcomes of the daily inputs and improves its gaps
PCLDC 2019 started with an opening ceremony on April 26, 2019 at Dar-ul-Kalam 85-D Model Town Lahore, and ended on 4th May 2019, with the closing ceremony.
A key note address was presented by Dr. Noor ul Zaman Rafiq, Chairperson PFRD, researcher and trainer on community development issues.
The key philosophy of PCLDC 2019 was based on participatory approaches, methodologies and tools learned from ILDC, AHI, Japan

POAs (Plan of Actions) were another key characteristic of the PCLDC, Where participants developed their POAs, to utilize what they have learned, for their personal and professional life.
At the closing ceremony of PCLDC 2019, a small activity of International AIDS Candlelight memorial ceremony was organized to advocate the rights of People living with HIV & AIDS, and prayed for those who died with AIDS and living with HIV & AIDS. Rev. Fr. Morris Jalal, director Catholic TV lead the prayer services.

Several organizing committee meetings were held at the AAS office to plan for PCDLC 2019.The following points was discussed in details and finalized; o Venue for PCLDC 2019, Dar ul Kalam, 85 D, Block Model Town, Lahore o Content of PCLDC 2019 o Invitation letter to the organizations and individuals, o Stationary and Logistical requirements o Roles and responsibilities of the organizing committee members and facilitators o Resource materials and handouts development.
Sharing of PCLDC Planning with Ms.Kyoko Shimizu, AHI Japan. The details of the PCLDC Planning and its program, and final list of the participants were shared with Ms. Kyoko Shimizu, AHI, Japan, for her technical input, feedback and comments.

Opening Ceremony:
The PCLDC 2019, started with the opening ceremony session that was moderated by Mr. Iqbal Sani Alumni PCLDC 2018 and Lieut Gulnaz, Alumni PLCDC 2018. It was an example for the participants of PCLDC 2019, that PCLDC Alumni are part of the PCLDC, they are accepted, appreciated and invited to play their active role in the different activities of PCLDC as a member of LIFE Alliance, and alumni of PCLDC and ILDC. The presence of PCLDC & ILDC Alumni at the opening ceremony was a symbol to welcome the percipients of PCLDC 2019, as new family members of LIFE Alliance. The following were the key highlights of opening ceremony of PCLDC 2019. o Prayer:-The PCLDC 2019, started with the recitation of Holy verses from Holy Quran by
Muhammad Sajad, and a Christian prayer by Lieut Naila Farhan, from the Salvation Army, Pakistan participants of PCLDC 2019.
o Welcome: Hector Nihal, Director, AAS Pakistan, and coordinator of PCLDC 2019, welcomed the honorable guests, Alumni’s of PCLDC & ILDC, participants of PCLDC-2019&organizing team members on behalf of Asian Health Institute (AHI) Japan& AIDS Awareness Society (AAS), Pakistan, to be part of this historic event. He appreciated the Organizational heads of the NGO’s, who managed to send their staff to join PCLDC 2019for their personal as well as organizational growth.
o Introduction of participants; The facilitators invited the participants to introduce themselves by sharing their name, name of the organization, city and one quality of their personality. It was interesting to note that some of the participants felt difficult to pin point their one quality.
o Official opening of PCLDC 2019 through candlelight vigil; The moderators asked the participants to stand in one row, and Alumni of previous PCLDC and ILDC on another row, the facilitator and guest of honours in the front row. She explained to the audience, that the first candle will be lighted by the founder of the AAS and board members, they will the candle of the alumni of ILDC and PCLDC Facilitators, they will light the candle of PCLDC& ILDC Alumni, and they will light the candles of the participants of PCLDC 2019, the light of candle symbolizes the light of knowledge, and clear the clouds of darkness in the society, as well as its means that the flow of light starts from the AAS & AHI organizations, and it go through to the facilitators, and from facilitators to PCLDC/ILDC Alumni and from Alumni to the participants of PCLDC 2019. It was a wonderful activity that was well perceived by the organizers and well received by the participants. It created the sense of acceptability as well as a sense of responsibility.
o Keynote address: Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Noor Ul Zaman Rafique, the vice president of AAS, from PFRD; he has many years of experience in public health sector, a renowned researcher and trainer. He appreciated the role of AHI and AAS for filling the gap in social sector, by offering incredible training package to people involved in community development process at grass root level. He said trainings like PCLDC are a platform that strengthens the knowledge and skills of community development workers,

and provides an opportunity to explore their leadership skills and abilities. He highlighted the different aspects of community leader and its role in the society.
o Introduction of AAS, AHI, ILDC & PCLDC: - Hector Nihal gave a comprehensive presentation on the introduction of PCLDC 2019, Organizing Partners, i.e. AAS & AHI, its historical perspective, the process and scope of PCLDC and ILDC, its importance, its impact on their personal life and organizational growth. He shared the processes and style of learning. He said we are here to deliver our best, and it’s the choice of the participants what they want, and what they can get from it, it’s their choice how they want to utilize this time. He also shared the vision of Dr. Kawahara, how he was inspired and motivated by the training need of community development workers in Nepal, while he was working there as a professional medical doctor, he realized that by building the capacity of community development workers we can prevent the disease at community level, so he started a capacity building program for community development workers such as ILDC, which is know a very successful program of AHI Japan, and the PCLDC is a continuation of the vision of Dr. Kawahara , based on the participatory principals of ILDC, to empower the community development workers with knowledge, attitude and skills that enhance their capacity to be effective community development workers in their localities.
o Comments of Chief Guest of honour: - Dr. Altaf H. Tariq, founder of AAS Pakistan, and Chairperson of HMAP, appreciated the efforts of AAS and AHI for offering such a wonderful training to the community development workers in Pakistan. He said community development workers are the chosen people by Almighty Allah, because they are called to reduce the pain of common people and help them to solve their social, and community problems. He asked the participant to take part in the training with learning attitude so that you can learn more, because you came here to learn new things, so take full advantages of this time.
o Dr. Kalsoom Akthar; Vice chair of CCM Pakistan, and Alumni of ILDC, she shared her experience of ILDC Japan, and motivated the participants to become agents of social change in the society. She said that PCLDC is a way to ILDC, so you have a good chance, each one should avail this opportunity. She appreciated to role of AAS & AHI that is providing this golden opportunity to the people in Pakistan.
o Mr. Asher Nazir, Alumni PCLDC shared his experience of PCDLC and said that from the learning of PCLDC. I was able to win a project for children working at brick kiln; he said that all credit goes to PCLDC and its facilitators, who had provided me this opportunity.
o Mr. Khalid M, Alumni PCLDC, shared his experience of PCLDC, he said PCLDC is a training that gives you tongues to speak, courage to stand in front of people and confidence to face any situation.
o Steering Committee Meeting: Hector Nihal, Mujahid Hussain, Sehrish, Rubab, Iqbal Sani, and Gulnaz had the meeting and discussed the overall situation of the proceedings of the first day. The members of the committee appreciated the role of the moderators, and management team for their wonderful performance. The program of the next day was reviewed; roles and responsibilities of management team and moderators were shared.

Prayer: The prayer session was lead by Ms. Saima and Ms. Sajeela. It was an interfaith prayer, Ms. Saima lead the Christian prayer, where as Ms. Sajeela recited the holy verses from the Holy Quran. The prayer was based on to thank God for taking care of the whole night and providing the opportunity of learning and growth through participating in PCLDC.
Recap: The session was lead by Ms. Nayab and Ms. Rubab. With the help of brainstorming they asked participants to share main activities of the previous day. The following key points were shared by the participants;

Different speakers shared about the methodology and importance of PCLDC for young people
Experience sharing by the alumni of PCLDC and ILDC, which was very interesting encouraging and inspiring.
Session 1:Topic: - PCLDC 2019 norm setting, & group formation
o Facilitator : Mujahid Hussian o Pre-test:- Mr. Mujahid Hussian facilitated the pre test process, on the prescribed form.
He introduced the pre test form and described its purpose and guided them how to fill it. o Norm setting, expectations & fears:-Mujahid Hussain facilitated the session and with
the help of the participants to set norms of PCLDC 2019, and ask the participants to share their expectation and fears about the training. He fully involved the participants to establish the rules and by their own to follow during the entire course. The participants warmly participated. Session iv; Topic: Facilitation Skills;
o Facilitator: Hector Nihal o Learning objectives: To understand the concepts, process, and skills of facilitation to
be used in their sessions.
o Proceeding:- The session was facilitated by Mr. Hector Nihal, with the help of
brainstorming exercise, he help the participants understand the concept, role and responsibilities of a facilitator, and difference between, speaker, trainer and a facilitator. After this exercise the facilitator asked the participants, where they see themselves, and

what skills they would like to improve in this workshop. The participants were able to make the difference in the roles of a teacher, facilitator and a trainer, such as;
Speaker: his/her main role or intention is to inform or inspire, by using the techniques of speaking
Trainer: his/her main role or intention is to build capacities or skills by using the techniques of teaching
Facilitator; his/her main role or intention is to help the group to accomplish the group objectives by using group participation techniques.
It told to the participants that in PCLDC we will most to use the facilitation and training methodology. The clarity in the roles of speaker, trainer and facilitator was a new learning for the participants.

Session v; Topic: Presentation preparation;
o Facilitator: Hector Nihal
o Learning objective: To understand the key elements of a presentation preparation
and its delivery by the participants
o Proceedings: With the help of power point presentation, the facilitator shared the definition of a presentation, its importance, key components of a good presentation, and the role of a good presenter. The following points were highlighted while preparing a good presentation;

Then the participants were divided into small groups as per their topics, and asked them to reflect on their topics and develop their outlines. The following format for presentation development was shared with them by the facilitator.

Make a list of the material required such as type of stationary, multimedia, charts, markers etc,. The main facilitators helped the each team and provided them the technical guidance, input and moral support to prepare their presentations.

Feedback: The feedback session was lead by Ms. Nayab and Ms. Rubab. They distributed sticky notes slips among the participants and asked them to write their learning points, and then share it in a large group. The following key points were points were shared by the participants;

o Today we learn that we did not know before, such as HIV & AIDS o Learn methodology of making a presentation o Everything was new, which is very interesting for me o Very productive and participatory day o Facilitation skills, how to facilitate a session or a meeting. o Session planning skills o Role of the facilitator o Realized the purpose of participating in the PCLDC o The difference between speaker, facilitator and trainer and their role o Role of different groups during the PCLDC o PCLDC topics were finalized by the participants, it was very interesting, o Daily topics of PCLDC were distributed among participants

Staring Committee Meeting:- The staring committee meeting was held to review the daily performance and plan for the next day activities. The logistic management team, main facilitators, co facilitators and moderators of the next participated in the meeting. The following points were discussed;
Positive points; o The environment of the training was comfortable, participants easily expressed
themselves o The methodology of the training is very good
Area of improvement; o Also involve those participants and give them confidence to speak, who feel
hesitant to participate in the activities.
Next day planning; The next day schedule was jointly developed with the support of main and co facilitators, and moderators were asked to follow the daily schedule.

28th April 2019
Prayer; The prayer was lead by Mr. Zaheer and Ms. Siama. They asked the participants
to sit in a circle and silently reflect on their life for few minutes. Then Ms. Siam, read the holy verses from the Holy Bible and gave a short reflection on it, and they same way Mr. Zaheer recited the holy verse from the Holy Quran.
Recap; The recap session was facilitated by Ms. Nazima and Mr. Dilawar. Mr. Dilwar asked to share the important activities and learning of previous day and Ms. Nazima wrote it on the white board. The following points were highlighted;
Group formation of the participants for the delegation of different responsibilities among participants

Topic:- Self-awareness& personality development
o Facilitators: Mr. Hector Nihal, Sajeela, Siama
o Learning objective for the participants : To learn more about themselves and
explore their personal strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats, and how these aspects of their personalities are linked to their work.
o Proceedings: Ms. Saima introduced the team, topic and its key components of the presentation and shared the learning objectives of the session. Ms. Sajeela
with the help of brainstorming and group work helped the participants to understand the meaning, definition and purpose of self-awareness in the context of personality development. The participants realized that self awareness is a key factor in the personality development. Mr.Hector Nihal, with the help of different group dynamic exercise, helped the participants in know and understand themselves as well as indentify their strengths and grey areas, and make a plan to improve it. He used the following group dynamic exercise; Flash back ; He asked the participants to make a circle,
close their eyes, and silently listen and reflect what the facilitator will lead you. The facilitator started with their grandparents, parents, relatives, school life, college life, and professional life, asked them to think about the positive feeling, positive support as well as negative feelings and different hindrances they received and felt from different people in their life. The participants realized that within 15 to 29 minutes they have watched a film of their whole life, they felt it was a good exercise, that has provided them an opportunity to see themselves growing at different stages of their life, it has provided them the

opportunity to thank those people who have supported them in their life, they realized the positive and negative role of different people in their life.
Johari Window; The session was facilitated Hector Nihal. He through power point presentation describe the purpose and uses of Johari Window, and described its four squares. It was a new learning for the participants that helped them to know different aspects of their personality.
SWOT Analysis: The participants were asked to describe the abbreviation of SWOT, The following was described; S: Strengths W: Weakness O: Opportunities T:Threats; Then the facilitator asked the participants to make a square on the paper sheet and identify their personal strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats, and reflect on this sheet, and identify what 3 strengths they want to develop or increase, what three weakness they want to decrease or remove, what 3 opportunity they think they can avail in next three years and what threats they are facing they can reduce. The facilitator also helped to participants to make an analysis and develop their personality development plans.

The organizational presentation was a very good activity, it helped the participants to share their organizational work, and their role in the organization. 29th April 2019 Prayer; The prayer session was lead by Ms Nazia and Mr. Ijaz. Ms. Nazia recited the Holy
verses from the Holy Quran and Mr. Ijaz had the Christian prayer. The participants silently reflected on these verses for few minutes.
Recap: The session was lead by Ms. Siama and Mr. Amjad Gill, they asked the participants to share the key points of the previous day proceedings. The following points were shared by the participants;
Self awareness session, the personal life reflection SWOT analysis, identified our strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats Johari Window, self analysis tool, Organizational presentation by participants, the threat points were highlighted in the
presentations, 1) focus of the organization, 2) challenges being faced by the organization, and 3) Our role in the organization.
Topic:- Community Development
o Facilitator: Nayab & Nazma Noreen, Hector & Mujahid
o Learning Objective: The participants will understand the concept of community
development, know the steps of community development, challenges being faced by community development workers, what is CBO and its role
o Proceedings:- Ms. Nayab introduced the team for the topic, and shared the learning
objective of the session. Ms. Nazma described the process and content of the session
and role of each team member. What is community development?
The facilitator divided the group into small groups and asked them to make a definition of a community development, and then share it in a large group. The both groups jointly finalized the following definition of a community development; Community Development is a process where community members come together, to take collective actions and to solve their common problems for the betterment of their
community. Community Development Process:
The facilitator divided the participants into two groups, group A, working as rural community and group B, as urban community. The co facilitators played the role of community development worker in each group, where as group A was facilitated by Mr. Mujahid and Group B was facilitated by Mr. Hector. Each group was asked to follow the following steps;
Step 1: Draw a map of the village and urban slum; The both groups draw a
map of village and urban community on a white sheet. Then facilitator asked them to define a community, the group definition was shared by the group leaders. This process helped to understand the community such as; its type, its nature, its size and its physical structure.
Step 2:Coordination and identification of potential leaders and members The community development worker was asked to identity five potential community leaders from the community, as community leaders or community contact persons.

Both groups identified their community leaders based on their better understanding of the community.
Step 3:Situational Analysis or need assessment/ Problem identification The community development worker facilitated the process in each group, and made a list of local community problems such as water, electricity, transportation, proper streets, health and lack of educational facilities etc.,
Step 4:Problem prioritization; By using the scoring method participants were facilitated by community development worker to prioritize their problems focusing on the importance of the problem. Both groups made a list according to by giving 1 to 5 score, the 1 the most important and 5 the least important.
Step 5:Selection of most important problem and designing a strategy; Each group was asked to select the most important problem. The Group A, selected the main problem as “No Clean Drinking Water”, and Group B, selected “Lack of Educational facilities”, as important problem of their communities.
Step 6: Problem Analysis, The facilitator introduced the “But Why Tool” to the both groups and asked them to analyze their selected problem by using the “But and Why”, tool. Each group was supported by the facilitators to identify the root causes of the main problem. It was a very interesting exercise for the participants, because it helped them to identify the root causes of the problem as well as learn a new tool of problem analysis the “But Why”. Both groups identified the root cause of their problem was lack of strong leadership in their community.
Step 7: Looking for possible solution of the problem; By looking at the root causes identified by the participants, facilitator asked the participants to find out a solution of this problem. After a small group work they suggested to form a local Community Based Organization (CBO), in their community which is responsible to address their community needs and problems.
Step 8: Formation and strengthening of Community Based Organization (CBO). The community development worker, called the meeting of community members asked them to select five most active members of their community for the formation of a CBO, he/she also explained the process, purpose and role of the CBO. Each group adopted the following steps for their CBO formation; Asked the community members, to volunteer themselves be part of the CBO, Through election process, executive committee of the CBO was formed The roles of key persons such as president, general secretary, and finance
secretary were discussed. The facilitator gave a presentation to highlight the role and responsibilities of executive members of the CBOs;

Step 9:- Community development The community development worker asked the CBO to organize a meeting and find out the solution of the community problems such as “Lack of Educational Facilities” and No clean drinking water. After the group work, each group presented their plan of action to address their problem. Then both groups critically analyzed the plan of action of each group and facilitator gave their technical input.
o Role of Community Development Worker; Then the facilitator asked the participants to review and analyze the role of community development worker who were involved with them throughout in this process; The following points were discussed; Qualities and Characteristics of the community development worker Skill, Knowledge and attitude is required for a community development worker Role of community development at his/her organization and in the community. The session was summarized by the facilitator by highlighting the main points of the session, and the learning’s of the participants. The participants felt that in this session they got the opportunity to learn the community development process from step one to the end, and it was very interesting.

Topic: Participatory approaches and tools
o Facilitators: Nazia and Hector
o Objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able to understand the
concept, strategies and tools of participatory approaches.
o Proceedings: Ms. Nazia introduced the team, topic learning objective, and key
components of the topic. The facilitator divided the participants into small groups and gave a case study and asked the participants to identify the different participatory approaches and tools used in this story. After discussion on the different points presented by the leaders, the facilitator defined the different key elements of participatory approaches and different tools used in the participatory approaches, he gave the example of PCLDC which is also based on the principles of participatory approaches, therefore; Participatory approaches are the processes in which local people are involved;
they are empowered by creating different opportunities for them, to get confidence and ownership. This enhances their capacity to take action to defend their own interests
Participatory tools are, where a group of people are involved to accomplish the required results such as; Mapping tools; like social mapping, resource mapping, transit walk mapping,
mobility mapping, Diagramming tools; like seasonal calendar, time line, Ranking tools: well being ranking,

Proceedings; The facilitator introduced the topic, and its learning objective with the participants. Then with the help of brainstorming exercise, they defined the right and needs accordingly;.
Right: Right is an obligation, that is legally, socially and morally correct, and it can be claimed.
Need; Need is a thing tha is required for the survival of any persons. After this activity they divided the participants into small groups and asked them to make a list of the rights, and make a different between rights and needs. Staring Committee Meeting:- The staring committee meeting was held to review the daily performance and plan for the next day activities. The logistics management team, main facilitators, co facilitators and moderators of the next day participated in the meeting. The following points were discussed;
Positive points; o It is a different experience, learning by doing is a very good methodology, o The co facilitators were very active and supportive, o The mapping and but why exercises were very good o In a short period of time the whole process of community development was
discussed and done by the participants o The level of participations and confidences is being increased among the
participants,

30th April 2019 Prayer:- The prayer session was lead by Mr. Zaheer and Leit Mehnaz. The special prayer
was offered for Mr. Francis Ruffi, by Mr. Zaheer, he recited the Holy verses from the Holy Quran, Leift Mehnaz read the Holy Verses from the Bible and asked the participants to silently reflect on these verses. She also shared her personal reflection on it.
Tribute of Mr. Francis Ruffi; On the death anniversary of Mr. Francis Ruffi, a special prayer was offered. The documentary about the life of Mr. Francis Ruffi was showed through multi media. Then participants shared their views about their personal experience with Mr. Ruffi. It was a very emotional moments for some participants.
Recap; The recap session was facilitated by Ms. Rubab and Mr. Faiz. They asked the participants to share the important activities of the previous day. The following are some of the key points shared by the participants;

o Learning Objective: To help the participants understand and explore the concept and
role of a leader and develop different leadership skills.
o Proceedings: Mr. Dilawar introduced the team, topic, its content and learning objective of the session. The following topics were highlighted; Definition of a leader Qualities of a good leader Leadership skills
Team building Communication Model and communication skills
o Definition of a leader: The facilitator distributed the paper slips and asked them to write down, what they understand by the word leadership, and who is a leader. Then divided them into small groups and asked them to make a definition of the Leader, after the group presentation, the participants were agreed on the following definition of the leader;
The leader is a person who influences others by its words or actions, and people
follow him or her. o Qualities of a Good Leader;
The facilitator divided the participants into two groups, Group A, & Group B, and asked them to make a tower in the room by using available resources in the room. The height of the tower will decide the winner. The both groups tried their best to make a tower of chairs. Then facilitators asked the both groups and sit in their groups and analyze the process and discuss the qualities, characteristics and role of a leader in the accomplishment of the given task. The following points were highlighted;

The facilitator asked the participants to have a self analysis and list down what characteristic they have, and what they would like to improve, to be a good leader.
Leadership styles; The facilitator divided the group into four small groups and asked gave them a case study and asked them to response the following questions and then present it in the form of role play; What type of leadership styles you can see in this story What are the characteristics of each leadership style After the group work, each group prepared a role play and presented it in front of all participants. They presented the democratic and dictatorship style of leadership. The following points were highlight; Democratic style of leadership;

Dictatorship style of leadership Top to bottom approach Most of the time decision are made by one person No consultative process in decision making Authority is with one person or leader The facilitator asked the participants to have a self analysis, and identify what is their leadership style and what type of leadership style they would like to adopt, when they have an opportunity to play and leadership role in their organization or community.
Skills of a Leader; Through brain storming exercise facilitator asked the participants to
describe the skills of a leader. The following most important skills were identified; Communication skills Problem solving skills Planning skills Management skills Negotiation skills Then participants were asked to list down, which skills they have and which skills they would like to improve through this session.
Communication skills Communication model; With the help of power point presentation, the facilitator described the communication model and its different components such as sender, receiver, message, means and feedback and explained the role of each component. The participants realized that each component of communication model is very important, without it the communication process is not completed. The following is the communication model;

Types of Communication; with the help of role play, and brainstorming exercise the following types of communication were identified;
Verbal Communication; speaking, talking, Non verbal communication: written, symbols, gestures, posture, signs,
expression Communication Skills: With the help of brainstorming exercise, participants were
asked to identify communication skills, the following 4 basic communication skills were identified such as, listening, writing, speaking and reading.
Communication barriers & solutions: With the help of whisperings exercise, the facilitator Amjid Gill highlighted the different barriers in communication. He asked the one volunteer and gave him message to communicate it in the ears of another person and then see if the last person has received the same message. At the end of the exercise participants found that the message was different from original message. Then facilitator divided the participants into small groups and asked them to identify the communication barriers in this process. The following was the group presentation.

Correctness At the end of the session participants were given a leadership assessment form to evaluate their leadership qualities and skills, how much knowledge they have gained and improved their leadership skills. It was amazing to note that the level of learning was very good, that was very encouraging for the facilitators.
o Problem solving skills: The facilitator divided the participants into two small groups and gave them four different problems for the solution. After the group work each group

was asked to share their experience and define what is a problem. The following points were shared and highlighted; What is a problem; Problem is a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or
harmful and needing to be dealt with or to overcome. What is a problem solving; Problem solving is a process of finding solution to a
difficult or complex situation. Following steps of problem solving were highlighted; Step 1: Understand the problem, and identify the issue Step 2: Understand the interest of different stakeholders Step 3: List the possible solutions Step 4: Evaluate options Step 5: Select the best option, or options Step 6: Document the agreement Step 7: Agree on contingences, monitoring and evaluation.

o Topic: Advocacy &networking
o Facilitators; Zaheer, Hina and Mujahid
o Learning objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able understand
the concept of advocacy and networking and steps of advocacy campaign. o Proceedings: The facilitators introduced the facilitator’s team, main topic, its learning
objectives and session planning. With the help of group dynamic exercise, they helped
the participants to understand the concept and process of advocacy. The following
points were highlighted;
o Definition of Advocacy: Advocacy is a process of supporting any cause or becoming voice of the voiceless, and to defend or promote their rights.
o Networking; The facilitator using the Web exercise explained the importance of networking and role of different stakeholders. They asked the participants to make a circle, and using the story which is attached as annexure # 08), defined different roles to the participants and then asked them to catch a rope when their name is called. It helped them to understand the role of different key stakeholders in the process of advocacy
and networking. o Steps of Advocacy & networking.
Through power point presentation the facilitator highlighted the following points for the advocacy and networking; Step 1: Mobilization and organizing likeminded people at one platform Step 2: Identification of the core issue or problem to be addressed Step 3: Setting the strategic objectives of the advocacy Step 4:Collecting the real facts related to the problem Step 5: Identification of the target groups, decision makers, concerned authorities Step 6: Determine the decision that can influence the decision makers Step 7: Identification of allies, who are also affected, and willing to join the

At the end the facilitators summarized the session by highlighting its main points. It was
a new topic for some participants, and they shared their learning through feedback and
appreciated the methodology and confidence of the facilitators.

o Proceedings: The session started by introduction of topic, its content, role of team members and learning objective of the session. Definition of Peace; The facilitator divided the group into small groups and asked
them to define the peace. After the group presentation the following definition jointly was developed by the facilitator; “It is a situation and environment where someone feels secure, relax, accepted by society and had to opportunities of growth”. Ms. Zubida, the facilitator with the help of power point presentation shared and highlighted the following points; What is peace, Peace building and peace promotion Key elements and strategies of peace building at community level Role of different stake holders in peace building
Experience sharing on peace building: Ms. Zubida Dewan shared her experience of ILDC and PCLDC, how she was motivated by these trainings to play her due role in the promotion and building peace in the society. She said, she was inspired the people of Japan for their role in peace building after being the first victim of Atomic Bomb, and how they have overcome from this situation. Mr. Hector Nihal, also shared his experience of visit to Hiroshima, and the role of
people of Japan in peace building, he also showed a video about the atomic bomb at
Hiroshima, and its effects on the people of Japan.

Topic: Globalization &Global perspective of development with a

four small groups and asked them to draw posters that reflect the positive and negative effects of globalization, and then present it in large group. The poster presentation was very interesting. industrialization The world has become global village, now there is
more move ability of people to other countries then before.

MDGs & SDGs: Ms. Rubab facilitated the session focusing on the following points;
Historical perspective of MDGs & SDGs Description of MDGs and SDGs She distributed a sticky notes to the participants and asked them to write what is the meaning of MDGs and on the second slip write what is the meaning of SDGs. Then each one was asked to share his/her points. MDGs: Millennium Development Goals SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals
Then the facilitator gave a briefly described the historical perspective of MDGs and SDGs with its purpose. He also shared the experience of different countries in the execution of MDGs. It was said that UN agreed on 8 MDGs in 2000 to address the most important issues of mankind, and in 2015 reflecting of the MDGs progress the World leadership agreed on the 17 SDGs, that reflect the major and important development issues of mankind. Then the facilitator distributed play cards of MDGs among the participants and asked them to reflect on each MDG and shared their reflection what they understood from this play card. In the second phase she also gave the play cards with SDGs and again asked them to reflect on each card and share it in a large group. The list of MDGs and SDGs was played on the screen, and asked the participants to reflect and identify, on which SDG their organization is working and try to make linkages with your work and SDGs, and find out what contribution your organization is making in the accomplishment of SDGs.

Dr. Noor ul Zaman Rafique the guest speaker shared the progress of government of Pakistan on SDGs. He said that in Pakistan National Assembly adopted SDGs on 16thFebruary 2016, as Pakistan’s national development agenda, Pakistan was the first country who adopted UN development agenda unanimously in the parliament, the 7

pillars of vision 2025 are also aligned with SDGs. Pakistan has set 320 performance indicators against 17 SDGs.But the overall situtaiton is not so good in many areas and Pakistan is far behind to achive its targets due to lack of political will and governance issues.

PCLDC 2019. He said the basic objective is to see what the learning process among participants is, identify the logistical, management and learning environment gaps, as well as to know what the learning of the participants is until now. The facilitator distributed a paper and asked them to write the following three points; What is their learning until now? What are the positive points of PCLDC 2019? o Definition of the project: The facilitator divided the participants into small groups and asked them to define the project. After the group presentation, the following definition was agreed by the participants; A project series of planned activities for a specific task, within set time frame and with set resources.
o Difference between project and a program With the brain storming activity, participants understood the difference between the project and program; Project has a specific task, time, objectives and allocated resources. Program is continuation of different projects focusing on the same issue of problem.
o Project Proposal Development Process: The facilitator divided the participants into same groups of community development session, and they were asked to develop a project proposal on the issues they had identified; Group A: Selected the topic; Provision of basic educational facilities Group B; Selected the topic, Provision of clean drinking water The facilitator asked the participants to sit in their groups, and using the flash cards, follow the instructions of the facilitators.

o Step 1: Community situational analysis: The facilitators asked the both groups to reflect back on the session on community development and community exposure, considering the both session the following points were highlighted; Group A; Had the community situational analysis of their village, Group B: Had the community situational analysis of their urban slum Both groups focused on the key issues and problems of the community. They identified the problems to be addressed such as; Group A: Selected the topic; Provision of basic educational facilities Group B; selected the topic, Provision of clean drinking water The facilitator shared that in the situational analysis, we present the back ground and gives reasons of writing the proposal. Provide the basic information of the community that is fact based.
o Step 2: Propose a solution to the identified problem, (Project Goal): Each group was asked to write a solution of the problem as a project goal on the flash card. It was said that it is a key component of the project proposal. It reflects that what we want to achieve from this intervention or project.
o Step 3: How you will solve this problem, or achieve project goal; The facilitator asked the both groups to consider the SMART formula, make your project objectives; it should not be more than three or four. Each group made their two objectives. They wrote it on their flash cards.
o Step 4: How you will achieve these objectives step by step, different activities; The facilitator asked the both groups to write different activities of achieve your both objectives. Activities of objective one on one flash card and activities of objective two on second flash card.
o Step 5; What will be the output and outcome of these activities; The facilitator asked the both groups to make three columns against each activity and write the output in column one and outcome in column two, and use of output in column three. He also explained to the participants, what is output, what is outcome and what is the meaning of output use. The both groups followed the instruction and completed the task.
o Step 5: When and who will do these activities, design a work plan; The facilitators asked the both groups to develop their work plans considering the activities of both objectives, they had listed above, and also write against it, who will do this activity.
o Step 8: What resources are required to achieve your project goal and objectives, the budget; Considering the listed activities each group was asked to make a list of required resources they need to achieve their project objectives. After making a list, they were facilitated to make a budget of their project. The facilitator also gave an input about the budget and how to make a budget for a project proposal. The following points were highlighted; Budget is a financial document of the project, and it has the following key elements;

o Step 9: How you will monitor the progress of your work, monitoring and evaluation plan, The facilitator asked the participants how they would know that their objectives have been achieved, to know about it, there is a system called monitoring and evaluation or Monitoring, Evaluation And Learning (MEAL). The facilitator gave a brief input on the topic and asked the participants to develop a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plan. Both groups formed committees and designated their responsibilities.
o Step 10: Project review: The facilitator asked the both groups to arrange their working according to the different steps and paste them on the floor.
o Step 11: Submission of the proposal to potential financial partner; The facilitator shared the process of the project proposal submissions to donor agencies and the list of required documents; Step 1: Call for concept note or project proposal from any donor agency Step 2: Call for project proposal on the accepted concept note with deadlines and
given project proposal formats Step 3: Write a project proposal on given format, with asked documents such as,
audit reports, registration certificate, organization profile etc, and submit it within due date.
o Step 12: Evaluation of the project proposal by the donors; The facilitator explained the process the participants and then asked the both groups to present their proposals to the donor in the form of a role play. Mr.Mujahid Hussian, who gave a critical analysis and review of each project and his recommendation.
It was a lengthy and tiring exercise for the participants, but at the end they were happy that they had developed a project proposal. It was first time for them to discuss and see such an important document, which they have been a part. They said now it is easy for them to understand the role in their organizations working in different project, because now we know the process and requirements of a successful project.

look of the life of brick kiln workers and gypsy community. o I realized how difficult it is to work at brick kiln factory, in a hot season, their life is
very tough. o It was strange that brick kiln owner supports the education of their children but the
parents of the children are not interesting in the education of their children. o First time I realized that project proposal document has many components, now I can
have better understanding of my work o The project proposal development process was very interesting and easy to
understand, but it require more time. o The facilitation style was excellent, it was simple and easy to understand o Suggestions;
There should be more time for project proposal topic There should be alternative plans for transgender exposure visit

talents and enjoy their time together as members of PCLDC 2019
o Proceedings: The cultural night started with
the lighting of candles and singing of a song. The cultural night was based on the following activities, facilitated by the organizing team; Comments by the PCLDC members and
facilitators; They shared their feelings and experience of PCLDC, which was very encouraging for the organizing team. The PCLDC is building leadership at community level.
Cultural songs& dances, The solo and group dances such as; Pakhtun dance and Punjabi ludi were performed by the PCLDC members,
Jokes & poetry; Jokes, poetry and songs were performed by the PCLDC Members. Comments by the main facilitators; They appreciated the organizing team and
participants for their active participation in the PCLDC as well as cultural night event. Bar Be Que; The bar be que was prepared and cooked by the participants and thy
enjoyed the delicious food. The management of the organizing team was excellent, they made this event an everlasting evening. Everyone enjoyed and fully participated to make this event a memorable part of the PCLDC. The event started at 7 pm and wrapped up around 10:00 pm. Participants went away with remarkable memories and everyone was fully tuned after the program.

The facilitator said that it is very important component, and it needs special skills for the monitoring and evaluation of the project activities and its implementation process. He also responded to the questions of the participants and shared his organizational experience of MEAL.

o Learning Objective: To assess the level of knowledge and skills gained by the
participants during PCLDC 2019.
o Proceedings: -The organizers conducted a post-test to assess the level of knowledge
and skills gained by the participants during PCLDC 2019. A prescribed form was given to the participants and they were asked to fill it. The findings of the post-test are attached in the annex.

o Learning Objective: To assess the participants ‘level of learning and feedback about the logistical and management related issues in PCLDC 2019.
o Proceedings: The facilitator gave a prescribed format to evaluate the different aspects
of PCDLC 2019, to respond different questions and use a scale from 0 to 10 points, 0 being the lowest and 10 the highest according to their personal understanding.It was interesting to see that the participants had gained knowledge and skills, and that they are feeling more confident. The findings of the evaluation are attached.

Closing Ceremony:
The closing ceremony of PCLDC 2019 was held at Dar-ul-Kalam 85-D block Model Town Lahore, facilitated by Mr. Zaheer, Ms. Hina and Ms. Arooj. The honorable guests Rev. Fr. Morris Jalal, OFM (Cap), Director Catholic TV Chanel, Noor ul Zaman Rafiq, Dr. Haji Haneif, Dr. Kalsoom Akhtar, Dr. Altaf H. Tariq, Mr. Khalid Mehmood the alumni of PCLDC and ILDC, and the representatives of different organizations participated in the PCLDC 2019 closing ceremony. The following are the main activities; o Certificate Distribution Ceremony:
The certificates of participation were given to participants of PCLDC 2019 and certificates of appreciation were given to the volunteers and supporters for PCLDC 2019, by honorable guests Rev. Fr. Morris Jalal OFM (Cap), and Director Catholic TV, Diocese of Lahore, Pakistan, as well as Dr. Noor ul Zaman Rafiq, Dr. Haji Haneif, Dr. Kalsoom, Mr. Khalid Mehmood, Mr. Iqbal Sani. At the time of certificate receiving, a feedback about the person’s abilities, qualitative, and participation in PCLDC 2019, was given by the facilitators Mr. Mujahid Hussian, and Mr. Hector Nihal.
o Comments by Participants; All the participants shared their views about the PCLDC 2019, its methodology, their
participations and their learning. The following points were shared by almost all participants; The PCLDC is unique type of training; it is a platform for young community
development workers to enhance their knowledge, skills, confidence and communication skills.
The PCLDC brings internal change, it brings attitudinal change in the personalities of participants.
The PCLDC is a participatory training, each and every person of PCLDC was involved in different activities, it gives confidence and courage to speak, to take initiatives.
Ms. Nazma Noreen; On behalf of participants of PCLDC 2019, she shared her views accordingly; “I had a different understanding and mindset about the PCLDC, but after participating in it, I was really impressed by the facilitators, their facilitation skills, and their dealing with the participants. This training gives a conceptual clarity, knowledge, and skills to , the participants as they expected. The training starts with the individual (me), goes to the local community and then gives a global perspective of development, the topics like SDGs, globalization and project proposal writing are very important and interesting addressed by the facilitators, it has increased the values of this training. All the participants are grateful to organizers, the AHI for providing opportunity to young people to enhance their leadership skills, it is a wonderful contribution to the society”.
o Comments of Guest of Honors: Rev. Fr. Morris Jalal OFM (Cap), Director Catholic TV
Chanel, congratulated all the participants and appreciated the organizers of PCLDC 2019, AAS and AHI. He said that AAS is doing a wonderful work in building young leadership at community level, I am very much impressed by the sharing of the participants, that they have learned a lot. I am very thankful to AHI, which is supporting the young people to play their active role for the betterment of people at community level. I expect that participants will properly utilize their learning in their organizations and in their communities.

Dr. Altaf H. Tariq Chairman Homeopathic Medical Association of Pakistan (HMAP), and founder member of AAS Pakistan, appreciated the role of AAS and AHI for supporting such an important training which is a wonderful opportunity for young people in Pakistan.
Dr. Noor ul Zaman Rafique, Chairperson, PFRD organization, and Vice Chairman of AAS, appreciated the AAS team, for organizing this excellent workshop, he said, we are a team, we support each other and work together, PCLDC is an annual program of AHI & AAS which is a great contribution in social sector in Pakistan, and we appreciate such initiatives, it is a need of the time and it is addressing the needs of many young people. The role of AAS& AHI is commendable.
o Dr. Kalsoom Akthar, Chairperson of Active Help Organization and Member of CCM Pakistan& Alumni ILDC 2016, she appreciated the efforts of the organizing team, AAS, for their excellent work. She also shared her experience of ILDC, she said PCLDC is a way forward towards ILDC, it is wonderful opportunity for young people.
o Mr. Mujahid Hussian, the facilitator PCLDC 2019, and ILDC Alumni, said the PCLDC is a venue of experience of learning and growth, the participants gave us new ideas, new challenges, which is amazing. I am happy to see that PCLDC is growing, in experience, innovation and PCLDC Alumni. It is a platform for young people to develop and explore their leadership skills, AAS and AHI is providing this opportunity, I appreciate their roles and contributions.

Conclusion;
Mr. Hector Nihal, the Director of AAS, coordinator of PCLDC, thanked all the participants, volunteers, organizing team and guest of honours for participating in this important event. On behalf of participants, PCLDC 2019, organizing team, and AAS he thanked the AHI, AHI honorable Board, and particularly Ms. Kyoko Shimizu, for her technical and moral support, and commitment with PCLDC program in Pakistan. He said it is only possible with the support, cooperation and contribution of AHI. He also thanked the organizations of participations who realized the importance of the training and trusted on us. The PCLDC organizing team for their tireless efforts, the PCLDC/ILDC Alumni for their strong commitment with PCLDC and valuable inputs, Mr. Mujahid Hussian, for his strong support, cooperation and commitment to strengthen the PCLDC in Pakistan, the management of Dar ul Kalam for providing the learning environment to the participants. He said the popularity and importance of PCLDC is growing, which is an honour of AAS, he also introduced LIFE Alliance to the Alumni of PCLDC 2019, invited them to join LIFE Alliance. He said every year PCLDC is a new and learning experience. The interest and ownership of PCLCD/ILDC alumni in PCLDC is very encouraging and we appreciated their efforts and support.

POST PCLDC 2019 ACTIVITEIS
Facilitators & Organizing Team of PCLDC 2019 Evaluation: -The evaluation
meeting of the facilitators and organizing team was held to evaluate the PCLDC
2019. The following points were discussed;
o Positive points of PCLDC 2019:-The following points were highlighted;
The participants are happy and satisfied by the performance of the organizing team
and facilitators.
The participation level of participants in different activities was very good. The
following are some of the examples;
The participants took the responsibilities of co facilitators, moderators, and
taking initiatives in doing energizers.
It was observed by the organizers that co facilitators were working late
evenings in preparing their presentation; it showed their interest and sense of
responsibility.
The closing ceremony and cultural night was totally hosted and facilitated by
the PCLDC participants and PCLDC Alumni.
The PCLDC Alumni said that it was once again an excellent experience of being a
part of the PCLDC 2019.
The overall role of the organizing team was very good; they were responsible,
supportive and taking initiatives.
The participants were satisfied with the residence, food and logistical arrangements
by the organizing team, everything was available for the participants as per their
need.
The exposure of different communities, provided an opportunity to the participants to
have a direct interaction with the communities to understand their issues and life
style, which was lifelong learning.
o Area of improvement;
The participants invitation process needs to be start earlier
There should be alternative exposure plans, so that if something goes wrong at the
last moment, we can have a plan B.
Reduce some of the topics from the content to give more time to the important topics
such as leadership and project proposal writing
o Role of ILDC/PCLDC Alumni in PCLDC 2019; The following points were discussed
and decided on the role of ILDC/PCLDC 2019.
The ILDC/PCLDC Alumni played an excellent role in the organizing and execution of
PCLDC 2019. Their voluntary role was appreciated and acknowledged by the
organizing committee.
The organizing committee realized that it is a positive indicator, that PCLDC/ILDC
Alumni are taking ownership of the PCLDC, which is very encouraging.

Mr. Hector Nihal thanked the organizing team of AAS & AHI for providing the opportunity
to explore and experience their management, leadership and facilitation qualities and
skills as well as support this important event.
o PCLDC 2019 Narrative and Financial Report preparation and submission:
The narrative and financial report of the PCLDC 2019 was prepared and shared with the
key stakeholders.

Sustainability of PCLDC:
he sustainability of PCLDC we had the following plan;
o Step one: Organizing ILDC/PCLDC Alumni at one platform
o Step two; Involvement of ILDC/PCLDC Alumni in the organizing of PCLDC and give
them different roles, such as facilitation of sessions, hosting opening and closing
ceremony, support in the exposure visits, preparing a team of facilitators etc.,
o Step three; Resource mobilization for the continuation of PCLDC after the
completion of the project with AHI.
The following actions has been taken by the organizing team of PCLDC;
o Step one: Organizing ILDC/PCLDC Alumni at one platform
o The LIFE Alliance of PCLDC/ILDC Alumni has been formed in 2018
o Step two; Involvement of ILDC/PCLDC Alumni in the organizing of PCLDC and
give them different roles, such as facilitation of sessions, hosting opening and
closing ceremony, support in the exposure visits, preparing a team of facilitators etc.,
o The number and involvement of PCLDC/ILDC Alumni is increasing every
year, which is a positive indicator. In 2019, ten PCLDC/ILDC Alumni were
directly involved; three participated at closing and opening ceremony of
PCLDC.
o The LIFE Alliance organized two events in collaboration with PLCDC Alumni
organizations such as URI such as;
International Peace Day 2018
Interfaith peace festival
Step three; Resource mobilization for the continuation of PCLDC after the
completion of the project with AHI.
o The PCLDC Program, content and methodology was shared with Mr. Anwar
Ahmed, from KNH, a German INGO, working in Pakistan. He showed his
interest in the program, he promised to participate in PCLDC 2019 as an
observer. But unfortunately he became sick and could not participate.
o Voluntary participation in different activities organized by LIFE Alliance,
PCLDC organizing committee meetings and PCLDC execution.
