NARORA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Introduction:
Narora is located on the banks of river Ganges, in district
Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh. A nuclear power plant is located in its
vicinity. Narora is located at281148N 782253E. It has an average
elevation of 174 metres (571 ft). It is about 150 kilometres (93 mi) away
from Delhi. As of 2001 India census,Narora had a population of 20,376.
Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Its average
literacy rate is 58%, lower than the national average of 59.5%, with maleliteracy 65% and female literacy 49%. In Narora, 14% of the population
is under 6 years of age.
About Narora Nuclear Power Plant:
Narora is home toone ofthe nation's networkofnuclear power
plants, operated by the Nuclear Power CorporationofIndia Limited (NPCIL),
a public sector undertaking under the Department ofAtomic Energy (DAE),Government ofIndia. Its twinreactors (2X220 MW) are an Indianised
versionofthe CanadianCANDU-Type reactors, which operate onnatural
uranium as fuel and heavy wateras the moderator-cum-primary coolant.
This is one ofthe reactors for which fuel would be procured from U.S.A.
under the '123 Nuclear Treaty' signed by the Governments ofIndiaand the
United States ofAmerica in October 2008.Narora has several bathing
locations or steps (Ghats) for holy dip in the Ganges. The view from Narora
Dam is very scenic. The modernresidential colony ofthe staffofNarora
Atomic Power Plant, (NAPS), is just near the dam. Its statue and parks are
also worth avisit. Belon-wali Mata mandir (Temple ofMother-goddess) is
just 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Narora. The nearest railway station is Rajghat
Narora which is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Narora. The nearest bus station is

500 metres (1,600 ft) from Narora. For holy dip in the Ganges several ghats
are Rajghat, Karnvaas, Narvar, Kalakatti, Ramghat etc. Dolphins are seen
betweena160 kilometres (99 mi) stretch in the upper part ofthe Ganges
between Bijnorand Narora Barrage. At Narvar, situated back side ofNAPS
colony, there is Sanskrit college named Sangved Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya.
The Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS) is a unit ofthe Nuclear Power
CorporationofIndia Limited (NPCIL). It generates 440 KW ofnuclear power
daily and feeds it to the Northern Power Grid. Altogether seven States are
its beneficiaries. The entire operationofpowergenerationat Narora is silent
and eco-friendly. But for its massive chimneys, reactors and power lines, the
existence ofthe complex could have remained unnoticed.
Narora is the fourth atomic power station in the country. Its foundation
was laid on January 4, 1974. The nuclear power plants to have been
commissioned in India earlier were Tarapur (Maharashtra) Rawatbhata
(Rajasthan) and Kalpakkam (Tamilnadu). The first unit ofNarora went critical
on March 12, 1989 while the second one achieved this distinctionon
October 24, 1991. The commercial productionofpowerfrom the first unit of
NAPS started on January 1, 1991. The second unit began its output on June
30, 1992.
