    January 22, 2010 Dear NARHA Member,

    Thank you for your interest in the NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification Program. Driving is one of

    the specialty certifications that NARHA offers. Please see the calendar of events on the NARHA website,

    www.www.narha.org, for the next scheduled Driving Certification. They will usually be held following a NARHA

    Driving Workshop.

    Effective January 1, 2008, the Driving Certification Program format will change. All new components, criteria

    and fees will apply to any applicant applying for workshop and/or certification in 2008. The new format includes an

    improved format of a three day NARHA Driving Workshop and a two day NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site

    Certification. This change is to benefit the Candidate in order to make your experience successful and enjoyable.

    A copy of the Driving Instructor Certification Application Booklet is enclosed for your reference and use. You

    will find all application materials in this booklet and may attach additional items as necessary to fulfill the application

    requirements. Please carefully review the application requirements and assess your eligibility to apply and attend a

    NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification. If you are only interested in attending a NARHA Driving

    Workshop please contact NARHA or download the NARHA Driving Workshop Application on the website as this

    application is only for the certification not the workshop.

    Welcome! All application materials and payment will be sent to the host site you are attending for your certification testing. Purpose of Certification The NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification program is offered for individuals who seek certification in the specialty discipline of driving. The purpose of this certification is to determine if the candidate possesses the professionalism, experience and skill level to meet the NARHA Driving Instructor criteria. The NARHA Certified Driving Instructor has demonstrated the ability to drive a variety of horses to different vehicles, over varying terrain. This candidate has demonstrated thorough knowledge of driving skills, teaching driving and the ability to safely direct a driving program. This candidate has demonstrated skills to supervise others as assistants and volunteers in a driving program. This candidate receives a passing evaluation from all course faculties and has met the goals of the course. To achieve NARHA Driving Certification status, candidates must complete and pass the NARHA Driving Certification. The certification includes practicum portions and examinations offered during the certification. At the conclusion of the certification, the candidate will be informed of the evaluator's recommendations for certification of Level l or Level ll. Candidates will be notified of their final results in writing by the NARHA office. Level I: NARHA Driving Instructor Level I is an individual who has at least 200 driving hours in a turnout, is safety oriented, capable of teaching basic driving skills, has knowledge of disabilities, knows parts of the harness, their purpose, and proper fit to the equine, can long line, and has knowledge of vehicles and their maintenance. Level II: NARHA Driving Instructor Level II knows all the information a Level I Instructor is required to know, plus, is an individual who has at least 400 hours in a turnout in various settings with different horses, can teach challenging and beneficial lessons to individuals with disabilities, can identify and manage problems with students/equine/volunteers, and the organizational and leadership skill to be the Head Instructor of a Driving Program. Level III: Under development Please refer to the criteria in this booklet for Level I and II. Auditors An individual cannot audit the NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification; they can only audit the NARHA Driving Workshop.

    Preparation: Being Physically Prepared While the on-site process is an effective certification method it can also be a stressful experience. Remember that the on- site certification requires physical preparedness to complete. If you have any concerns regarding your ability to participate in any of the components of certification, based on physical or mental limitations due to disability, injury or medical condition, contact the NARHA Office.     NARHA Driving On-Site Certification The NARHA Driving Certification Subcommittee has developed criteria which outline the skills and knowledge an instructor must possess in order to achieve certification as a NARHA Certified Driving Instructor, Level I or II. Please take a moment to go through the following criteria to make sure you meet all the requirements: See the enclosed criteria. Criteria to apply for certification: Prerequisites:

     Be a current member of NARHA  Be at least 21 years of age  Complete a NARHA Driving Workshop (NARHA Driving Workshop can be completed consecutively with a

    NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification, but it is not recommended.) Additional Criteria:

     Candidate must have completed the NARHA Driving Workshop within two years of attendance at a NARHA Driving Instructor On-Site Certification.

     Candidate must have completed at least 2 Driving Clinics offered to the public within the past two years; OR must have had at least six (6) hours of private driving instruction in the past two years; OR must have competed in at least one sanctioned (USEF, ADS) Combined Driving Event (CDE) at the pre
