The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year

towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of

the year.

To motivate faculty members to undertake

The college management sets aside the idea

To identify and earmark a suitable plot to

enable growing of medicinal plants which will

serve as specimens for Botany practical, and

thereby do away with the need to procure

specimens from the market.

A suitable plot of land has been identified

and prepared for growing medicinal plants.

Part B :

01. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution

The college is working towards modernisation and upgradation of teaching-learning

methods and infrastructure to impart quality equation in an amiable environment.

02. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG)

Following the recommendations of the NAAC peer team and after obtaining the

requisite permission of the University of Calcutta, the College commenced the Post-Graduate

course in Mathematics. A classroom has been provided exclusively for the P.G. students

along with an adequately equipped computer laboratory. P.G. classes are taken by the

teachers of the Mathematics department, and a good few by teachers of the Physics

department as well as guest faculties from other colleges and universities.

03. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

Being affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college is supposed to follow the

curricula framed by the University and guidelines laid down prescribed for the same.

04. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:

Proposals for holding seminars on interdisciplinary subjects / topics have been sent by

various departments to the UGC for consideration and approval.

05. Examination reforms implemented:

Examination reforms as per the University of Calcutta circular no. C53/79/05 and

CUS/214(cir)/08 have been implemented. Internal assessment of students was done through

class tests taken periodically.

Study leave, duty leave, leave for F.I.P, etc were provided to all the faculty members as

incentive and encouragement for further development. Leave was also granted to faculty

members to organize seminars / workshops, and to participate in Refresher / Orientation

courses as and when required. Dr. Aditi Saha (Botany), Dr.Sumahan Bandyopadhyay and

Prof. Arpita Mistri (both from Anthropology), Dr.Tilak Sinha and Dr.Santanu Maity (both from

Physics) attended refresher courses. Dr Jayita Roy (Anthropology), Dr. Susmita Podder

(Chemistry) and Dr. Mohua Guha (Zoology) attended orientation programmes. Prof.Shruti

Lahiri (English) is on FIP leave.

Socio-economic survey of the pot makers was conducted by the Department of

Anthropology in several wards of the Howrah Municipal Corporation in January 2011.

Blood donation camps were organized by St. John’s Ambulance and Nursing Division.

St. John Ambulance and Nursing Division participated in a rally against drug addiction

organized by Bantra P.S. and Bantra Thana Samannway Committee, and organized

the annual social training camp at Dumcol College, Basantapur, Murshidabad.

taken on student feedback:

Student assessment of teachers was conducted only in the final year (3rd year) of

Honours students. On the basis of the feedback, the concerned teachers were advised to take

note of the salient points raised.

25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination

results, issue of certificates:

The entire system is fully computerised.

26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

A pump set has been installed to combat the problem of water logging.

The spacious two wheeler stand, with a capacity for keeping about 400 two wheelers

against payment of 0.50 paisa only per two wheeler to the caretaker, is suitably maintained.

A garden is maintained in the college with some rare botanical species and medicinal

plants.

27. Technology upgradation:

Electronic teaching aids are used by the faculty in addition to the conventional teaching

methods. The Anthropology Department has been provided with a microscope to analyse the

honours students.

28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students:

Internet access is available in the library at UGC-Network Resource Centre established

from UGC grants both for the teachers and the students. Students and teachers have access

to the computers in their respective departments and library. Teachers can also access

computers in the chambers of principal and vice principals.

30, Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

The Alumni Association, though yet to get registration, functions informally in the

college. Retired teachers ritually meet once a year for the entire day to discuss different

issues and come up with pertinent suggestions about the departmental activities for

betterment of the college.

31. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association:

Parents-teachers meetings were organised by different departments to apprise the

parents about the holistic progress of their wards. All parents were requested to keep in touch

with the administration and the teachers of the concerned departments to keep themselves

abreast about the performance and progress of their wards.

Facilities for check up of students’ health were made available at the clinic located in

the college premises.

33. Performance in sports activities:

1. The College team became champions in the inter college football tournaments, both at

the district and state levels.

2. Tamal Mukherjee, Sourav Santra, Kunal Ghosh, Bhaskar Ghosh, Somnath Mallick,

Supriyo Mukherjee and Amanur Rahaman Mallick were selected to represent the

Calcutta University football team.

3. Debashish Dutta secured second position in high jump in the district to qualify for the

state level tournament.

4. Subhajit Panja and Sahib Koley participated in the inter-university gymnastics

competitions at Gwalior and Kurukshetra as representatives of the University of Calcutta.

secured 2nd position.

6. The College team reached the 4th round in T-20 cricket tournament organised by the

Cricket Association of Bengal.

34. Incentives to outstanding sportspersons:

Incentives are provided to outstanding sports persons. There is a special quota for their

admission; free studentship is granted and sports kits and accessories are provided to

deserving candidates. Appropriate recognition is given whenever a sportsperson performs

well. Besides, the cost of travelling and refreshment and necessary conditioning costs are

also borne by the College.

35. Student achievements and awards:

Sailen Das, a cadet in the St John Ambulance and Nursing Division, volunteered

as medical assistant (11.05.11 to 22.05.11) in the IPL matches held at the Eden

Gardens.

N.C.C cadets, both girls and boys, from the College participated in the LRD

matches in Kolkata, the girl cadets also won the Best Contingent Award from the

Governor.

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling unit:

The guidance and counselling unit functions in the form of arranging remedial classes

and counselling as and when required by the students. Remedial classes for SC/ST/OBC

(excluding creamy layer) and minorities have been introduced with the UGC assistance

allocated for the purpose.

Coaching classes for preparing the students for entrance examinations in various services for

SC/ST/OBC(excluding creamy layer) have also been introduced.

37. Placement services provided to students:

This cell guides the students to build up career and arranges for campus

interview by different companies like WIPRO, ITC, JD JONES, CALL TECH, TATA-AIG for the

recruitment in various sales, marketing and manufacturing jobs. Necessary guidance was

given to procure jobs in CIPLA, LUPIN, GLENMARK etc. students willing to avail the service

of the placement cell were asked to record necessary particulars in the PLACEMENT

INFORMATION REGISTER kept in the VICE PRINCIPAL’S ROOM. General notice was

served from time to time intimating students about the programmes of the cell.

Computer training was imparted to the office staff for upgradation of their knowledge

and enhancement of computer skills.

GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL CELL addresses the grievance of the students, teachers,

employees and guardians regarding complaints relating to college affairs.

Teacher’s day is celebrated by all the respective departments of the college.

Fresher’s welcome is given to the 1st year students by respective departments and the

college.

Besides the college magazine, wall magazines are brought out by the various

departments of the college which focuses on students’ overall understanding of the

Our college in collaboration with the Red Ribbon Club conducted by NACO (Govt. of

India), participated in blood donation camps, Prevention of Thallasaemia and Aids

awareness camps, Anti-HIV campaign and Preservation Of Whole Blood workshops.

The unit also participated in the workshop held in the Science City Auditorium on May

8th, 2010, on the occasion of World Thallasaemia Day.

St John’s Nursing division trained 160 students of Dumcol college, Basantapur,

Murshidabad, in first aid, in December 2010.

Remedial classes for SC/ST/OBC (excluding creamy layer) and minorities have been

introduced with the UGC assistance allocated for the purpose. Classes are being held

in URDU, History, Political science for minorities.

Coaching classes fore entry in services for SC/ST/OBC ( excluding creamy layer) have

been introduced from this session with the UGC assistance allocated for the purpose.

Student’s health check up is done in the clinic in the college premises.
