2.4b Earlier Arrival of Desaix.Allow Desaix, Boudet’s Division (all unitsof B-D), and the D Corps artillery to enterwith their rolls beginning at 10:00am, andnot 2:00pm as normally in scenario 5.4.The dice roll required and position ofentry remain the same. This option givesthe Austrian player 1 VP.

2.4c Use of both of the Above.Using both 2.4a and 2.4b will swing thegame’s balance heavily in the favor of theFrench. For that reason, the VP cost forthe two combined is 6 VPs, not 4.

2.4d More French Artillery.Allow the two optional French Armyartillery units (ARes) to enter play withthe Guard. If the Guard is already set up atstart in the scenario being played, set thetwo artillery units up anywhere within ator within six hexes of either Guard unit.Once in play, these two artillery units cantrace command radius to any French CorpsHQ. This option gives the Austrian player2 VPs.

3.0 AustrianSpecial Rules3.1 Attachment andDetachment

None are allowed, expect thoseenforced by scenario information (andthese mandated ones cannot be changedlater). The Austrian command situation ismurky enough, no sense in making itworse. See also the development of theLeft Wing, 3.3.

3.2 No Corps Structure& Order of Succession

The Austrian Army iscomposed of divisions, with no corpsstructure. Handle all orders as DivisionalGoals. Remember, this means eachdivisional commander is “bolted to theground” when he has no orders. To avoidhaving the Divisional Commander retaina full brigade as a body guard when he isso “bolted”, the regular stackingrequirement (which requires divisioncommanders to stack with one of theirbrigades) is waived here for theAustrians—all Austrian leaders can stackwith (and affect the morale of) any friendlyunit or none as the player choses. In anexception to the usual Straggler Recoveryrules, these divisions can recoverstragglers even while on divisional goals.

The commander of the RightWing (O’Reilly) is the functionalcommander of the “Right” units—which

act as a division. These units are Cav-Right, Right Artillery, and Infantry(Right).

Zachs, the commander of theCenter Wing, only enters play if 3.4a isused or when he has been appointed toarmy command. When he enters playbecause Melas has become a casualty, place him instantly in the hex where Melasdied. Place him there after the hex makesany required Morale Check.

Ott (Left Wing) is a free leader(he can apply his morale modifiers to anystack) in every scenario. He can set upwith any troops. (See also 3.3).

Should Melas become acasualty, the following is the order ofofficers to take command: Zachs, Ott,O’Reilly, Hadik, Schellenberg and thenVogelsang. If you find you must go beyondVogelsang...give up and try again anotherday.

3.3 The Left WingIn any order issued to Ott from

the Army Commander or when Ott getsinitiative, up to four divisions can beassigned to a nominal Left Wing. Onceassigned, place the Left HQ anywherewhich allows these divisions to be incommand and they effectively form acorps. When this Wing already existswhen play begins, set it up with the WingHQ acting as a Corps HQ according to thestandard rules.

3.4 Austrian MinorVariants

3.4a Wing Command Works.Allow the Austrian player to set up threeCorps HQs (Center, Right, and Left WingHQs). These can be set up anywhere onthe game map provided the followingrules are applied and the assigned divisionsare within normal Command Radius. Thisoption gives the French player 3 VPs.

• All divisions must be assignedto a Wing before play begins.• AG-L must be assigned to theLeft Wing. AG-C must be assigned to theCenter Wing. AG-R must be assigned tothe Right Wing.• No more than four of theremaining divisions can be assigned to asingle Wing.• Divisions need not be assignedto any Wing if so desired.• Ott commands the Left Wingand Zachs commands the Center Wing.• The special rules in 3.2 and 3.3

do not apply to divisions assigned to aWing.• Once assigned, Wingdesignations cannot be changed duringplay.• Wings and all units assigned tothem apply all the usual series rulesregarding Corps.

Perhaps Napoleon’s greatestcontribution to military science is hisadoption of a standardized corpsstructure. Divisions were common enoughin continental armies, but the concept ofa permanent army corps—with apermanent staff—was non-existent.Armies relied on ad-hoc wing structures, which were usually established the nightbefore a battle, to control masses of troops. It usually didn’t work.

3.4b More Cavalry. WhenElsnitz’ Cavalry Division enters play orsets up, allow 7 Hus-E and Er Hus-E to setup or enter also. This option gives theFrench player 1 VP.

These units comprise Nimsch’sCavalry Brigade (2,500 men) that Melassent to guard against an imaginary threatto his line of communications. Their usein the battle would have exacerbatedNapoleon’s weakness in cavalry.

4.0 VictoryConditions

These victory conditions areused in all scenarios except scenario 5.1(which has its own). Victory is determinedon a point total basis. Each side earns VPsbased on wrecked formations and terrainfeatures controlled.

4.1 Victory PointsAwarded for WreckedFormations

Each player gets 1 VP for eachenemy division wrecked counting bothstragglers and casualties as they exist atthe end of play.

4.2 Victory PointsAwarded forGeographicObjectives

The player who either occupiesat the end of play or was the last to movethrough a feature is awarded the VPs forit. A single player must control all hexesof a multi-hex feature to be awarded thepoints for it.

5.2 Ott Turns theFrench Right

By early afternoon, FieldMarshall Ott (commanding the LeftColumn) had taken Castel Ceriolo withsurprisingly little opposition. Observingthe battle still raging to the southwest, Ottput his troops into motion to flank Watrin’sDivision of Lannes’ Corps—which hadfilled in on Victor’s right earlier. Thisturning movement (combined with thecollapse of the French center) sent theArmy of the Reserve retreating back to St.Giuliano Vecchio. Only the commitmentof Monnier’s Division and the ConsularGuard prevented a French disaster.

As evening approached,Melas—slightly wounded and satisfiedhe had won a great victory—retired toAlexandria and left his chief of staff toorganize a pursuit. Colonel Zachs waspreparing to do this when Desaix’sFrenchmen burst upon the scene. Desaix—a combat leader if there ever was one—made his famous observation: “This battleis lost, sire, but there is time to win another”and preceded to do just that. With hisunblooded troops, he hurled the Austriansback from Marengo. The end result was acomplete reversal of the day’s fortunes.

Historical NotesMarengo stands as one of

Napoleon’s more desperate victories—won by the timely arrival of Desaix—aswell as his final triumph in Italy. It provedto be a decisive victory over the Austrians, and paved the way for Bonaparte to movefrom the status of First Consul to that ofEmperor. As such, the battles impact wasfar greater than a glance at its size wouldsuggest.

Upon his return from Egypt,Bonaparte found French fortunes at a lowebb. France’s frontiers were threatenedand internal revolt continued in Vendee. The Austrians recouped many of the lossesthey had suffered in Northern Italy in1796-97. Seeing Italy as the decisivetheater, Bonaparte chose to return to thefront there after being elected First Consulof France in December.

In the midst of political intriguesand domestic reforms, Napoleon beganforming a new army with which to take tothe field in the spring. Berthier was givennominal control of the force—called the“Army of the Reserve” to avoidtelegraphing Napoleon’s intentions to aspecific theater. Over the winter, this armygrew to over 40,000 men from both newdrafts as well as careful gathering of menwho were missed in earlier calls.

General Melas, the Austriancommander in Italy, had done quite wellfor himself. He had managed to drive theFrench virtually out of the region. He wasstill besieging Genoa. However, becauseof his success, Melas’ army was nowdepleted from combat and scatteredamong various screening and occupationduties. Despite still having 100,000 menin the region, Melas’ main body barelynumbered 30,000 troops.

Napoleon chose to takeadvantage of this dispersal. Early in Mayhe left Paris to join Berthier and takecommand of the Army of Reserve. By the14th, the army was ready and it began itsmarch to Northern Italy via the passes inthe Alps. The target was to debauch intothe Valley of the Po—behind Melas. Theplan was daring—even desperate. Tosucceed, Napoleon needed to move fastand defeat Melas before his army couldconcentrate. In the meantime, the Frenchwould have no safe line of retreat orsupply in case of misfortune.

By the 20th, the French werethrough the still-snowbound passes andstanding at the head of the valley of theAosta. There, a minute Austrian garrisonat Fort Bard almost wrecked Bonaparte’s

scheme. The fort resisted all attempts tocapture it and the Army of the Reservewas forced to sneak past it in the dead ofnight. The greatest difficulty was that fewwagons and artillery could manage to getpast the Austrians—Napoleon would becritically short of cannon and supply inany forthcoming engagement.

By May 22nd, Melas knew thatthe French Army of the Reserve—whichhe heretofore ignored as a figment ofFrench deception—was a real force andwas in his rear. 16,000 men garrisoned thetown of Alessandria along the TanaroRiver. Other forces—primarily 17,000under Elsnitz—were directed to convergethere.

Elsnitz ran into difficulties. Histroops had been busy screening 14,000French under Suchet. When the pressureabated, Suchet attacked Elsnitz on themarch, inflicted 9,000 casualties, anddelayed Elsnitz’s arrival at Alessandriauntil the second week of June. When hedid limp into the town, he did so with onlyhalf his original command.

Unfortunately for the French, areciprocal misfortune had derailed Frenchplans. Genoa, besieged by 25,000Austrians under General Ott, surrenderedon June 6th. The surrender freed up Ott’sforce to operate against Napoleon directly.Despite repeated please from Napoleon,Genoa’s commander, Massena, could holdout no longer.

Bonaparte moved to occupyMilan—directly astride Melas’ line ofcommunications and tried to provoke anattack by Melas. Melas refused to take thebait. As time passed, Napoleon becameworried that the Austrians would try toslip by him without giving battle. Hechose to force the issue.

On June 13th, the French movedon to the Marengo Plain—the flat groundbetween the Bormido and ScrivioRivers—and drove off the small Austriangarrison there. This force promptlyretreated to Alessandria and alerted Melasto the French presence.

Within Alessandira, Melas hadassembled 30,000 troops for the battle:23,000 infantry, 6,000 cavalry, and 92cannon. Opposing him, Napoleon had24,000 infantry, 3,200 cavalry, and a mere40 guns. More significantly, Napoleon’stroops were widely dispersed. OnlyVictor’s divisions (9,000 infantry and1,000 cavalry under Kellerman) faceMelas at Marengo. The Austriansoutnumbered the French 2:1 in bothcavalry and artillery.

Finally, Melas decided toattack. The tables were turned on theFrench—now it was the French who weredispersed in the face of a concentratedfoe. The Austrians endeavored to bringtheir weight to bear on Victor in order tocrush them before the French army couldconcentrate.

Melas organized into threecolumns: the Left, under Ott; the Right, amuch smaller force under O’Reilly; andthe Center column—comprised of abouthalf the Austrian army—remained directlyunder Melas. The plan called for all threecolumns to cross the Bormida at dawnand attack Victor. Ott’s Left Column wasto move via the north to flank the Frencharound Castel Ceriolo, while O’Reilly’stroops were to menace the southern flank. The Center (or Main) Column was toattack frontally.

Two flaws detracted from thesoundness of this plan. First, the entireAustrian army would have to cross theBormida over two small bridges whichwould slow the advance. Second, Melassent almost half his cavalry to defend hisrear against a supposed threat by Suchet. This threat proved to be non-existent andMelas’ move to counter it negated hiscavalry superiority.

Marengo: The BattleAt dawn on June 14th, the

Austrians began to cross the Bromida.O’Reilly’s force cleared the enemy picketsmaking room for the main force to deployfor the attack. It wasn’t, however, until8:00am that these troops (Hadik and Kaim)were ready to advance. Ott began hisflanking move marching behind these leadtroops.

Victor rapidly realized whatwas up. He massed his small force andsent word to the First Consul that theAustrians were attacking. Controversysurrounds the timing of that warning. Thesun rose at 4:36 am, but Victor’s dispatchwas not sent until between 8 and 9 am.Victor had waited until he was sure theAustrians had crossed in force and werepreparing to attack before sending wordto Napoleon. Unfortunately, this prudentwait also delayed the message so thatBonaparte did not receive word of theadvance until after the battle had begun—and he could hear the cannonade in thedistance.

To make matters worse,Napoleon seemed to discount the initialreports of a full-scale attack. He hadwatched Melas hide in Alessandria forseveral days and seemed convinced that

Melas planned to run rather than fight..Even as late as 10:00am, Napoleon sentorders further dispersing his army in orderto block a potential sideslip by theAustrians. Finally around 11:00am,Napoleon became convinced of theseriousness of the growing engagement.Immediately he countermanded the ordersfor further dispersal he had sent and setout for the field himself.

Victor was acquitting himselfwell. Compensating for any damage doneby the late report, he conducted a superbdefensive stand. After a substantialcannonade, the Austrian infantryadvanced at 9:00am and crossed theFontanone in several places only to bedriven back. Piloti’s cavalry suffered anespecially severe reverse—they crossedthe stream to turn the French flank only tobe mauled by Kellerman’s excellentcavalry and be flung back.

The Fontanone itself proved tobe an invaluable defensive asset. Thestream had risen because of the previousnight’s rain and had become difficult formen and impassable for artillery.Additionally, the stream swung sharplyto the west at Marengo creating a convexfield of fire. Austrian troops advancing onthe village not only took fire from thefront, but also from the flanks. Attackshere were rendered very difficult.

Still, the Austrian numbersbegan to tell. Victor had to defend asubstantial length of the stream and waspressed not only at Marengo itself butabove and below the tow as well. Watrin’sDivision of Lannes’ Corps arrived around11:00am to reinforce the French right—but this could only be a temporary measuregiven the unopposed advance by Ott onCastel Ceriolo.

Nonetheless, the Austrianswere not exactly pressing home theiradvantages. The Austrian attacks werelethargic, methodical, and uncoordinated.Melas did not realize the weakness of hisopponents. Ott’s flanking march was slowand even after perching on the Frenchright-rear, his force had yet to engage theenemy.

At 1:00pm, the Austriansrenewed their attacks. Again they ledwith cannon and followed with frontalattacks on the Fontanone—but this timeOtt’s men joined in. The attacks gained afoothold on the French side of the streamand five battalions of Austrian Grenadiersstormed Marengo itself briefly taking thevillage. The French 43rd Linecounterattacked and retook the village. The Austrian foothold over the Fontanoneremained.

Page 31

At this time, Ott on his initiativechanged his orders to pivot to take Lannes’Corps in the flank. Given this pressure,Lannes and Victor retired in somedisorder—giving up Marengo for the finaltime. Only Kellerman’s cavalry managedto keep the Austrian center at bay duringthe withdrawal. Napoleon, who had justarrived on the field, was forced to commithis Consular Guard to slow Ott’s pursuit.

The Guard (a mere 800 men)formed square and stood off Elsnitz’scavalry. Then they slowly retired in theface of enemy infantry and cavalry. Indoing so they allowed the French to reformaround Giuliano Vecchio. As Lannes andVictor were reforming, the lead elementsof Desaix’s Corps began to arrive. Whilecomplete disaster had been avoided, itwas clear the French had lost the morning’sfight.

At this time, Melas (who hadbeen slightly wounded earlier) elected toretire to Alessandria and let his chief ofstaff, Col. Zachs, assume command ofwhat he thought would be the pursuit ofthe beaten French.

With the arrival of Desaix, theever aggressive Napoleon chose tocounterattack to redeem the day’s fortunes.Rapidly he put together a French attack.Fourteen French cannon wereconcentrated near the Tortona Road.Desaix’s entire corps had arrived andKellerman’s ever-present cavalry was insupport.

Zachs had sent forward twobrigades of Grenadiers to lead the pursuit. The Grenadiers, more mindful of speedthan the tactical situation, massed incolumn astride Tortona Road. Frenchartillery blasted them severely as theyattempted to deploy. As the Frenchinfantry advanced to the Grenadier’s front,Kellerman’s cavalry sliced into their flank.

Once the Grenadiers broke, therest of the Center Column fell back indisorder. Other Austrian infantry was tooexhausted and bled white to stand for longunder the pressure of the French advance.

Still commanding a sizableforce near Castel Ceriolo, Ottcontemplated a counterattack toward theFrench flank—in effect, a repeat of thetactics which had worked so well earlierin the day. He rejected that idea as eventsoutpaced his ability to organize such anassault. Instead, Ott chose to screen theretreat of Zach’s troops by retiring alongZach’s flank to the Bormida. His concernwas to prevent a French seizure ofAlessandria itself.

The battle ended with both sidesoccupying the same positions with whichthey began the battle. However, Melas’army had suffered a severe mauling—aclear defeat of the Austrians. Melas’ defeatwas a severe setback to Austrian morale. In almost one blow, Napoleon hadrecovered northern Italy for France.

Success did not come cheaply. In all, the French lost about 7,000 killedand wounded and a further 1,000 prisoners. One casualty in particular was a severeblow—Desaix was killed leading a charge.Desaix would have definitely received amarshal’s baton in 1803 and given hisalready proven skills would have been akey commander during the life of theFrench Empire.

The commanders of both sidescommitted errors in judgment during thecourse of the campaign and battle. Melas’proved more disastrous, but Napoleonhovered on the brink of catastrophe aswell.

Chief among the Austrianmistakes was the failure to concentratesuperior forces against Bonaparte—notjust once, but repeatedly. Once Genoahad fallen, Melas left almost 10,000 menthere to hold the city—even though theBritish had offered to assume the defenseof the city to free up the Kaiser’s men forother purposes. On the field of Marengo,Melas squandered an important Austrianadvantage—cavalry—by detaching alarge force to counter an imagined Frenchmove. The cavalry remaining with theattacking army was unaggressivelyhandled and contributed little to the battle.

Napoleon’s greatest error in thecampaign was to underestimate hisopponent. He was convinced Melas wouldnot come out to fight and dangerouslyscattered his forces to intercept anyAustrian end run. Because of this, whenMelas did attack, he did so against lessthan half of the French army.

Once on the field, Napoleondisplayed his customary grasp of the battle. He committed a few reserves to delay theAustrian pursuit and proved willing torevert to the offensive when Desaixarrived. A lesser commander might havecut his losses and retired with an intactarmy—but Napoleon knew the value ofboldness and struck back immediately. This counterattack proved to be thedecisive shock that crushed the Austrianwill to continue and ended the war inalmost a single stroke.

Designer’sNotes

Marengo was chosen as thesecond release in this series in order toprovide a quick, playable, introductoryvehicle for the series. As such, I beleive itis about the smallest size battle the NBSsystem can handle and still provide enoughexcitement to maintain player interest. Moreover, as an excitement builder, thesituation is first rate. All of this makesMarengo an ideal quick-playing volumefor the series.

The series itself has beenchanged somewhat and that has beencovered in the series rules themselves. The perceptive player will be quick tonote that the “Brigade” in the name of theseries is something of a misnomer. Thestandard infantry unit for each army ismuch more likely to be a regiment than abrigade. Virtually all the Russian units inAusterlitz were regiments already, soformalizing the change was not a greatphilosophical leap.

Because of this unit scalkechange, sometimes a command level willbe subsumed. For example, in Marengo, the French Brigade commandersdisappear. Not all units will be regiments. The cavalry will remain in brigadestructure and British infantry will deployin brigades (since a British infantry“regiment” is actually a battalion). Thekey thing to remember is that armyorganization is much more diverse in thistime period than in later wars, socompromises will always have to be made.

Researching Marengo waseasier than I expected. First of all, I wasgreatly aided by one of our Italiancustomers who produced moderntopographical maps of the area. Thesemaps, when overlaid with the mapproduced by Berthier in 1805 proved howlittle the terrain had changed. Moststrikingly, there are no elevations in thisgame. There were a total of four countourlines on the original map—the closestseparation being almost 1/2 mile apart.Since a 30 foot change over a half mile (ormore) hardley warrents slope effects, Idropped the gentle slope of the ground asit appeared on the base maps.

Unit strengths and placementscame readily to hand as well. One usefulsource was the magazine Empires, Eagles& Lions (issue #3 which came out whileI was working on this project) which hadan article on the battle. The article featuredcopiues of Berthier’s maps (of which Ihad been working from hard-to-read

Page 32: Napoleonic Brigade Series: Marengo · Infantry must expend all of its ... to his line of communications. Their use in the battle would have exacerbated Napoleon’s weakness in cavalry.

Page 32

Marengo NBS #2

photocopies supplied by BillGray). Since I could not obtainBerthier’s little tome by hook, cook, or interlibrary loan, having legible copies of hismaps was an unexpectedpleasure.

Two items provedto be problems. First, theinformation on French artillerywas spotty and contradictory.Returns credit the French withup to 40 guns, but apparentlysome of these were not actuallypresent. Furse creditsNapoleon with only 15-20guns at the start of the battle—a number which excludes theartillery of the Guard andDesaix’s Corps. But what ofLannes’ Corps and Murat’sCavalry? All of my sourcesclaimed the artillery wasspread evenly among thedivisions of the army—exceptfor the guns accompanying theGuard. It is not clear if the 15-20 gun figure is just for Victor(who began the action) or if itincludes the guns attached toLannes and Murat (whoarrived later in the morning).

In the end, Icompromised. Victor got 5 gunpoints (16 cannon). Lannes gotno gun points, while Muratand the Guard got 2 gun pointseach. The end result is that theFrench have some 32 cannonavailable.

The second snagwas losses. The loss numbersmanufactured for the Ott’sFlank Attack and Desaix’sCounterattack scenarios arejust that—manufactured.None of the sources I trackeddown provided anythingresembleing detailed loss datato work with. I was forced toextrapolate heavily from thefinal totals Ihad.Unfortunately, this will bea common problem forNapoleonic games, since mostof these figures do not existoutside of various nationalarchieves. Until Dean givesme the research advancesadequate for me to jet aroundthe world doing archievalwork, I will have to rely onpublished sources.

Some of my sourceslist the Austrian AdvancedGuard as commanded byMarshal Quasdanovich, otherssay it was commanded byColonel Frimont. I went withFrimont since my best textualaccount gave him the nod.Marshal Q. will have to sit onthe bench unless someonemusters up conclusive proofthat he was actually there.

A number ofcomments have been sent myway on the need to recreate thedeparture of Melas from thebattle. Some expressed fearthat some sort of “idiot” rulewould be needed and thusdiminish the fun-factor for theAustrian player. In the end Idecided this issue wasn’tnearly as big as a problem as itlooked and certainly did notrequire a bunch of special rules.

Why? Simplybecause Melas was wounded(admittedly only slightly) andthat is why he left the field.Additionally, he left his Chiefof Staff (Colonel Zachs) incharge to organize the pursuit.Zachs knew as much about thesituation as Melas did, and, infact, much of the originalbattleplan was his work. Theend result was that it wouldhave mattered little if Melashad stayed—the Austrianreaction to the counterattackwould have been the same. The Austrians fell apartbecause they were tired, hadlost heavily, and wereexpecting to pursue a beatenfoe. The shock of theunexpected attack by Desaix’sfresh troops was too much forthem.

The one aspect ofthis drama I cannot control ishindsight. The Austrian gamer, unlike his historicalcounterpart, will be lookingfor this reposte, and will paycloser attention to details inorder to prevent it frombecoming a disaster. On theother hand, success with theAustrians will only come ifthey drive the French all butoff the map. To do so willrequire exactly the kind ofhard-charging that will bring

on the heavy losses andstragglers to generate theneeded fragility. I feel that theneed to drive forward, coupledwith the uncertainty ofDesaix’s arrival, compensatessomewhat for the benefits ofhindsight.
