Naples Rocked!Nearly 250 elevator and industry professionals gathered in picturesque Naples, Florida, April 14-17, for the 2019 NAEC Spring Educational Conference. From invaluable educational opportunities and fun networking events to well deserved relaxation time, without question, Naples Rocked! Here are this year’s highlights.
NAEC Member sessions commenced on Sunday kicking off the Conference. In the Contractors session, various topics of interest to the group included credit card merchant fees, the soon to be released NAEC Compensation Survey, and IT security/email breaches. Attendees also discussed insurance coverage including cyber and EPL (Employment Practices Liability). Participants commented that finding quality individuals is still an issue with labor.
The Suppliers weighed in on the United Leadership meeting for the 2020 Convention as well as Reno, Nevada, as a future location for the 2023, 2027 and 2031 Conventions. NAEC Staff and the Exhibit Advisory Committee are currently sourcing Canadian locations for United 2028, and the Membership Development Committee is developing a new incentive program to grow membership. Although It was suggested that Supplier members submit Mainline Spotlight articles as a great opportunity to get their name out to others, we encourage Contractor and Associate members to do the same, so please take advantage and submit an article and photos to [email protected].
Monday morning, guests enjoyed the opening breakfast while NAEC President, Gary Schuette, addressed the State of the Association. Included in his speech, was the announcement of the 2019-2020 NAEC Officers: President - Don Gelestino; Vice President - Michael Frecking; Treasurer - Rick Gable; and Secretary - Kevin Flotten. Congratulations to these individuals!
Gary also shared updates on attendance in our educational programs. For example, our Vertical Transportation Management Program has experienced a 7% increase in enrollees since this time last year with 76 currently enrolled and 24 graduates. Congratulations to everyone who finished the program!
A reminder that our annual convention will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this September 19-22. A very special surprise is planned for NAEC’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, so don’t miss this year’s Convention & Expo!
To conclude, Gary gave a warm introduction for Shelly Johnson, the new Executive Director of the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF), who provided the group with an update on news from EESF and the work she has begun.
After breakfast, keynote speaker Jack McCall, both entertained and inspired attendees on reconnecting in our lives through the use of Southern tales of his childhood.
Later that day, Vice President, Don Gelestino, led a diverse group of attendees in the Open Mic session. Among the talking points were education and training opportunities for employees. Programs such as Helmets to Hardhat and Vocational schools were discussed, as were the CET/CAT Training and VTMP Programs. In addition, it was pointed out that the NAEC Education/Safety Committee has partnered with CECA and are in the process of updating the curriculum for
meeting the training needs for the accessibility/residential lift industry in Canada. Those present also touched on maintenance logs and resources for MCP programs. Overall, it was a very productive session.
Amidst the various educational opportunities, Spring Conference offered attendees learning sessions focused on topics as Time Management, Ranking Higher in Google as well as technical sessions on Residential & Commercial Stairway Lifts and Elevator Safety among a host of other topics. The ever popular Roundtable Discussions wrapped up the educational offerings on Wednesday morning.
An NAEC event would not be the same without its old time favorite Dregs Party. Guests basked in the beautiful weather and sunshine that Naples had to offer as the 2019 Spring Educational Conference closed out with delicious food and drink accompanied with good friends - new and old.

MAY 2019
Oracle Elevator Company is one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing independent elevator companies. It has energetic employees and dedicated leaders who share a vision of the future, a vision that offers building owners a real alternative to what the multinational elevator companies have to offer. Oracle currently serves 36 markets in the US.
Founded in 2004 as a result of a series of acquisitions, Oracle continues to grow through a steady series of further acquisitions under the leadership of experienced industry executives and outside financial investors. Led by Paul Belliveau, President and CEO since 2015, Oracle chose L Squared Capital Partners to be its next investment partner in 2017. L Squared shared a vision of building Oracle into a national service company–– as well as realizing the achievement of Oracle’s full potential. As a long-term investor, backed by a group of family funds, L Squared was able to take an approach that would allow Oracle to invest in the future; a future which included a complete system upgrade to Sales Force Field Service Lightning, a robust acquisition strategy, and an audacious undertaking to build a national technical support and training center. This center, called OTEC, opened in Dallas in 2018, and is the technical hub of the company. It provides field technical support as well as technical training, including CET® training using the NAEC-endorsed technician-training program.
In 2018, Belliveau was tasked with moving the Corporate headquarters to Tampa, Florida, home to one of the key Oracle investors, Jeff Vinik, a prominent commercial real
estate developer and owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey team.
Today, Oracle is focused on organic and acquisitive growth. With a strategic vision for the institutional sector, they service a large number of high-profile universities, hospitals and airports across the US–– including Texas A&M University, University of Kentucky Medical Center and Miami International Airport. The combination of its institutional
account strategy and core account growth strategy offers a platform for growth and stability.
Oracle’s engine for growth consists of its motivated sales team, satisfied customers and empowered employees. Recognizing that the profile and reputation of the company comes from its technicians, Oracle’s field labor philosophy is based on a meritocracy, whereby field employees are rewarded for their contributions, as well as for the knowledge and value they provide to the company. This approach has been a positive recruiting tool for Oracle––as well as a refreshing change for industry veterans and customers who welcome a fresh approach.
Oracle’s vision of the future is to expand to all major markets and to serve its customers across the country, to be the elevator company of choice by building owners and employees––and indeed, other elevator companies who would like to share its vision, ambition, and success. Executing this bold strategy will result in the company increasing its revenue by up to 500% over the next 5 years.

KEB AMERICA, INC.
KEB was founded in Germany, in 1972, by engineer Karl-Ernst Brinkmann. KEB’s beginning in the elevator industry started in 1989 when they private labeled an elevator drive for Otis in Germany. Since then, KEB has gone on to supply over 250,000 drives which have gone into escalators, residential elevators, inclined elevators, and supertall elevator controllers.
KEB America recently celebrated its 40 year anniversary supporting the North American market. Based near Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it produces its F5 Elevator Drive and R6 Regenerative Drive, KEB America’s location is an ISO 9001:2015 production facility and plans to undergo a significant expansion this year in order to increase drive production capacity. In addition to production, the Minneapolis location houses R&D, engineering, service & repair, and technical support teams to support our elevator customers.
KEB America
KEB has always had a history of supplying innovative elevator drive technology. In the 1990’s, KEB introduced Direct Position Control™ (DPC) where the car positioning was handled internally in the drive. KEB then introduced Synthetic Pre-torque and Stationary Pole Identification™ (SPI) for permanent magnet elevator motors. These features vastly improved motor control performance and reduced commissioning times in the field. KEB continues to innovate its drive product today with new technology like its CANLift interface and its certified SIL3 Safe-Torque-Off option. Another area that KEB excels in is high power drive applications for supertall buildings. KEB drives have operated elevators up to 1600fpm and are available with either Regenerative or Active Front End modules.
Today, KEB continues to be family-owned, and has grown to be represented in over 40 countries worldwide with manufacturing plants strategically located in the United States, Germany, and China to support our major market locations. KEB America serves different vertical markets, but feels the elevator industry is unique because of its close-knit community. NAEC plays a big role in connecting the elevator community, and as an active member for 19 years, we look forward to many more years of membership. Come see us this year in Grand Rapids, Michigan!
