“The idea behind this exhibition is to concentrate on those areas in the visual arts not often seen and featured in most galleries on the island, to focus on those artists who are willing and eager to take chances and explore new ways of seeing, and to applaud and encourage those artists who have shifted direction from what was a safe though successful expression to a more adventuresome and risk taking manner.” - Reggie Levine. Saturday September 29 continued

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents: The Cherry Orchard7:30pm Methodist Church, downstairs at 2 Centre St. Tickets $25, available at theatreworkshop.com. Gregory Stroud’s new translation and adaptation of Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard. The play, set in the 1970’s summer colony of Nantucket, follows the rise and fall of the summer season with the Reynals, and a colorful variety of hangers-on, as they come to terms with the impending loss of their family summer “cottage.”The Theatre Workshop production re-imagines Chekhov’s classic comedy as a reckoning between island natives and the seasonal upper-class, between love and the burdens of the past, all in Lily Pulitzer, vintage Yves Saint Laurent, and Madras pants. Stroud’s new adaptation is timely, faithful, heartfelt, and wickedly funny. It is a love letter for a generation which came of age in the 1970s and a parable of sustainability for their children. Directed by Anne Breeding and Gregory Stroud, the Cherry Orchard is the quintessential island story.

The Nantucket Arts Council is a non‐profit organization that supports and encourages a collaborative community of the visual, performing, and literary arts through education, grants, scholarships, and events.

Dear Art Lovers,

Join us and become a contributing partner in an organization that for 39 years has been a tireless advocate for the arts on Nantucket. The Council, a committed group of like-minded people, is aware of the importance of a viable and lively cultural scene, and of the positive and life-enhancing effect it has within a community.

Another important and much thought-about concern of the Council is ways to support, encourage, and possibly even inspire the extraordinary reserve of talent living and working on the Island. We are so much richer, if we can acknowledge and embrace the working community of creative people living here as our neighbors and co-workers. Their infectious enthusiasm, vitality, and boundless energy is a source waiting to be tapped.

We hope that you will join the Council and become a partner in our efforts to see that the arts remain an active, life-enhancing force within our Island community.

Reggie Levine, PresidentNantucket Arts Council
