Although possessing magical powers, Nanny McPhee’s true calling is as a nanny, reining in the bad behaviour of children with her trademark ‘‘five lessons’’. With the sequel, Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang, soon showing in cinemas around the nation, Harry took the time to get to know Nanny and learn about what happens if you are caught being ‘‘naught-y’’. Harry: You are such a lady of mystery Nanny McPhee. What can you tell us about yourself? Nanny: I come from a land far away and a time long ago. I might be real or something you imagined. Now you see me, now you don’t. I love gardening. I don’t discipline children — I just show them good ways to discipline themselves. We all need a little help in that area from time to time. Harry: Can you tell us about your recent job? Nanny: Yes, it was on a farm with a nice family called the Greens. Their cousins were staying and the two groups of children fought a lot. I had to help them with a little bit of ‘‘conflict resolution’’, which is a grown-up phrase for helping people to stop fighting. Harry: Can you tell us about the five magical lessons that you teach to children in your care? Nanny: No.1 is ‘‘To stop fighting’’; No.2 is ‘‘To share nicely’’; No.3 is ‘‘To help each other’’; No.4 is ‘‘To be brave’’; and No.5 is ‘‘To have faith’’. They sound simple, but let me tell you, it’s no easy matter to teach these lessons in ways that children can understand and remember! Harry: What can Australian children take from these big five lessons? Nanny: I’m sure Australian children are like children all over the world — energetic, curious, clever, kind, interesting and sometimes naughty, so I hope the lessons make them think and laugh. Harry: What has been one of the funniest things when your magic meets disobedience? Nanny: The best thing was when some piglets escaped and the children had to round them up. Sometimes, when I bang my stick, I give it an instruction like ‘‘Make the piglets more difficult to catch’’ and I’m never sure quite what the stick will do. In this case, it gave the piglets the most extraordinary powers — some could fly, some could do gymnastics and some could even do synchronised swimming. That, I must confess, was the favourite moment of the whole job. When I saw those little piggies dancing underwater, even I found it hard to keep a straight face! Harry: Why is it that you go through such a, er, physical transformation as your little charges start to reform? Nanny: Some children think that I get prettier as the story goes on because the children get better-behaved. But some children think it’s because the children I am teaching come to love me. Those you love are always beautiful, even if they have a potato nose and hairy warts. What do you think? Harry: How do you succeed with challenging children where others have failed? Nanny: Mmm. I think it is a mixture of things. I never shout and I always listen. Listening and watching are the things I do best. Perhaps children I’m teaching understand that I respect them, even though they are being naughty. And I always, always love them. Harry: Is it likely that you would ever come work for an Australian family? Nanny: I think it is highly likely that my services will, at some point, be required Down Under. I shall look forward to it. I have always been very partial to koalas. Top prize ready for younger readers HEY kids, here’s your chance to win a fantastic book pack.
