Nanny knows naughtystar profile
HARRY the Dog recently caught up withNanny McPhee, the quirky heroine and star ofher self-titled 2006 film. Although possessingmagical powers, Nanny McPhee’s true callingis as a nanny, reining in the bad behaviour ofchildren with her trademark ‘‘five lessons’’.With the sequel, Nanny McPhee and The BigBang, soon showing in cinemas around thenation, Harry took the time to get to knowNanny and learn about what happens if youare caught being ‘‘naught-y’’.
Harry: You are such a lady of mystery NannyMcPhee. What can you tell us about yourself?
Nanny: I come from a land far away and atime long ago. I might be real or somethingyou imagined. Now you see me, now youdon’t. I love gardening. I don’t disciplinechildren — I just show them good ways todiscipline themselves. We all need a little helpin that area from time to time.
Harry: Can you tell us about your recent job?
Nanny: Yes, it was on a farm with a nice familycalled the Greens. Their cousins were stayingand the two groups of children fought a lot. I hadto help them with a little bit of ‘‘conflictresolution’’, which is a grown-up phrase forhelping people to stop fighting.
Harry: Can you tell us about the five magicallessons that you teach to children in your care?
Nanny: No.1 is ‘‘To stop fighting’’; No.2 is ‘‘Toshare nicely’’; No.3 is ‘‘To help each other’’;No.4 is ‘‘To be brave’’; and No.5 is ‘‘To havefaith’’. They sound simple, but let me tell you, it’sno easy matter to teach these lessons in waysthat children can understand and remember!
Harry: What can Australian children take fromthese big five lessons?
Nanny: I’m sure Australian children are likechildren all over the world — energetic, curious,
clever, kind, interesting and sometimes naughty,so I hope the lessons make them think and laugh.
Harry: What has been one of the funniest thingswhen your magic meets disobedience?
Nanny: The best thing was when some pigletsescaped and the children had to round them up.
Sometimes, when I bang my stick, I give it aninstruction like ‘‘Make the piglets more difficultto catch’’ and I’m never sure quite what the stickwill do. In this case, it gave the piglets the mostextraordinary powers — some could fly, somecould do gymnastics and some could even dosynchronised swimming. That, I must confess, was the favourite moment of the whole job. When I saw those little piggies dancingunderwater, even I found it hard to keep astraight face!
Harry: Why is it that you go through such a, er,physical transformation as your little chargesstart to reform?
Nanny: Some children think that I get prettier as
the story goes on because the children getbetter-behaved.But some children think it’s because thechildren I am teaching come to love me. Thoseyou love are always beautiful, even if theyhave a potato nose and hairy warts. What doyou think?
Harry: How do you succeed with challengingchildren where others have failed?Nanny: Mmm. I think it is a mixture of things.I never shout and I always listen. Listening andwatching are the things I do best. Perhapschildren I’m teaching understand that I respectthem, even though they are being naughty. AndI always, always love them.
Harry: Is it likely that you would ever come workfor an Australian family?Nanny: I think it is highly likely that my serviceswill, at some point, be required Down Under. Ishall look forward to it. I have always been verypartial to koalas.
