What’s Up and Upcoming from Nancy Cartwright

I just wrapped AN URBAN LEGEND, starring Kirstie Alley.This was THE most incredible experience I have ever had in myentire acting career! The story is about a blue-collar waitresswho has a freak accident and loses the use of her legs. Shestruggles through the course of the film, learning how to dealwith her sudden parapalegia. Atypical to most disease/acci-dent-of-the-week movies, this particular film has 138 (count’em) scenes and is shot in a style that plays very much like afeature film. Colleen Camp (DIE HARD lll, ILLEGALLYYOURS, GREEDY) plays the role of “Jude”, who betrays herbest friend with a tough love attitude. I played the part of“Dell”, the peacemaker of the trio, always there to make sureMarty (Alley) is OK. Robert Allan Ackerman (RADIANTCITY) is an actor’s dream of a director. He is true to his ownintegrity, and yet always open and appreciative of the actor’scontributions. I adored working with him!

It was such a treat to work with Kirstie.She is only doing a million and one things at a time: interviewsfor RADIANT CITY that was to air during our shoot; photosessions for upcoming publicity; working on upcomingprojects and the deals that accompany them; being a mom fortwo gorgeous kids; knowing her part backwards and forwardseffortlessly; writing the opening speech for an auction she was to

On Jan.15th at the Pasa-dena Playhouse I was ac-companied by my director,Leslie Welles, my pro-ducer, Francine DeVette,and my lighting designer,Steve Jacobson to theprestigious Drama-LogueAwards. We had allworked together on myone-woman play, “In Searchof Fellini.” I received onefor Performance and Stevereceived one for LightingDesign. It truly was like put-ting a beautiful bow on apackage for your bestfriend. Polly Warfield hadsummed it up in her Critic'sChoice review: “It plays likea joyous collaboration oftalented friends.” What aperfect way to complete agoal that was five years inthe making!

I recently attended a celebrity auc-tion/fund-raiser for Narconon, oneof the largest drug rehab facilities,boasting a 76% success rate. Devel-oped by humanitarian L. RonHubbard, Narconon is an interna-tional organization, serving 38 non-profit centers in 15 countries. KirstieAlley is the spokesperson and MC’dthe event. Diane Ladd, Lou Gossett,Jr. and George Foreman wereamong the celebrities whoreceived the esteemedDrug-Free Hero Award,given to those unsung he-roes who have goneabove-and-beyond thecall of duty in solvingour drug problems orare role models for ouryouth.

I believe in this program andwanted to help in some way so I do-nated my 1990 pink Miata to be auc-tioned off. I had already decided tosell the car anyway, but by giving itover to the auction, someone was go-

ing to be driving away with the cutestand only pink Miata in the world,Narconon was going to receive themoney for their programand I was going toget a 100% tax de-duction! Cool—everybody wins!

So the bidding began. As it turnedout, George Foreman bought the car!YES! For $7,500!!! Shortly thereaf-ter, he received his award and went upon stage to accept it. He started outby saying, “Miss Cartwright, with all

due respect, I am going to give thismoney to Narconon because I trulybelieve in this program, but I am go-ing to give you your car back! I amnot going to be riding around LosAngeles is a pink Miata!!!” Can youbelieve that!?! AND THEN… a goodfriend of mine came up to me sayingthat she had arrived late and was up-set because she really wanted to buymy Miata. So I said to her, “Do youstill want to buy it?” “Of course!” shereplied. “Give me $7,500 and it'syours!” And do you know what?!

SHE BOUGHT IT!!!! ANDTHEN, DIG THIS!!! Thatfriend is none other than CarinaRicco (pop-singer/actress). She

(actor) are celebritiesin Mexico. I asked her where she wasgoing to keep the car, in L.A. orMexico. She said, “Oh, in L.A.” Iasked her where she was going tostore the car when she wasn’t here andwould she consider letting me takecare of it to make sure the batterywouldn't run down and guesswhat???!!! She said, “Yes!!!!” So checkit out… I sold a used-car twice,narconon gets $15,000, I get the taxdeduction and I still get to drive it aroundwhen I want!!! I’d say I’m “in the pink”,wouldn't you?

And I thought I had a lotof energy! The three of us gals hung outtogether pretty much all the time! Thedinners in Kirstie's trailer were thebest… sharing how we lost our virginityand what it is like to kiss Jason Beghe(“Good Company”). Jason is a total babeand rounded out our trio nicely, makingthis truly a stellar example of what work-ing in this industry can be like when yousurround yourself with terrific people!

I am currently co-starring in an inde-pendent feature film called JERSEYROSE. It was written and is being di-rected by Ami Rothschild. I met Amiabout 6 years ago in Milton Katselas’acting class. Ami was told, “You area writer. Keep writing!” So she did.And as per Milton’s teachings, Ami is

not one to sit around. “Do it now!”has been a recurring theme in theKatselas’ philosophy. The film alsohighlights Jeffrey Tambor, JoeSantos, Christina Carlisi andAnnie Fitzgerald. More on thisas it unfolds!

My husband, “Murph” Murphy andhis writing partner, Peter Kjenaas,have written a screenplay calledGATHERING THE JONES’S. Weare going to produce it under ourbanner: Happy House Productions.This will be HHP’s second produc-
