Deadline for Newsletter to be determined in May

Newsletter Guidelines

Please include full names of people in written and photographic

contributions. It’s extra helpful if you rename photos to something like

‘JohnSmithandMaryWhiteNKCBanquet.jpg’ but if you include them and ID the

photo in the written contribution, I will be equally as thrilled.

Please include full names of dogs, especially in the case of kennel club

sanctioned shows and events.

Please clearly identify locations and full names of events in contributions.

Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. I can fix up anything you contribute.

Just write, write, snap photos, get it down and sent off to me!

Special Announcement

There will be no April newsletter unless some benevolent

person steps up. May one will be delayed. Contributions

during this time will be welcomed. (Newsletter editor is going

on course from 23 March to 1 May)

Spring is in the air. Everyone is ready to start the season

of dog activities even though we didn’t have much of a

winter break. When I looked at my calendar and notes

for the coming months, I realized what a busy and

vibrant club we are.

There are so many new things in the works for 2015

added to our already busy schedule and that is made

possible by the active members. Hundreds of hours of

volunteering, combined with the dedication and

passion we have for our sports is the backbone of this

club.

I have a personal request to those members that

haven’t “stepped up to the plate” yet, think about what

you do give back to the club that is making it possible

to bring all these events and activities together. If you

are new to the club and not yet sure where you fit in…

contact me and I’ll help you get involved. If our club is

not meeting your needs then we need to know, but on

the flip side of that is…what are you bringing to the

club? Your input is what drives this club. Don’t be

apathetic…we need you and your passion.

President’s Message

Julie MacTire. At your service

when not paddleboarding.

Letter from the Editor…

Hi, this is Julie. I’ve lived in Nanaimo since 1996, excepting a brief

stint in the military. Currently, I work for Dog n’ Suds Pet Services,

in their dog daycare. I’ve had Shibas for 20 years and counting.

When I’m not working at my three-to-five jobs and not writing

your newsletter, I also write the newsletter for Shiba Inu Canada,

go paddleboarding, bicycle around on vintage bicycles and hang

around on the Internet, blogging about Shibas and keeping my

dog’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram up-to-date.

When I grow up, I hope to one day own a dog business, but in the

interim, I’ll learn how to fix bicycles and keep writing about dogs

on the Internet.

Letter from the Editor’s Dog…

Hi, this is Tierce. I am a revolutionary, currently

fighting for my freedom from the yard. When not

standing up for civil canine rights, I enjoy long walks

on the beach, cheese, and knocking the flour off the

shelf and eating most of it, tracking the rest into

the living room.

I have an active Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

life, populated with people who understand the

pain of living with a human who ignores my need for

what is on her plate. I also write haiku:

My life as a dog

Foraging for survival

Can’t bake own biscuits

Letter from the Editor’s Husband…

No, we are not getting a puppy.

And now for a

completely gratuitous

picture of Shibas.

NANAIMO KENNEL CLUB FIRST WALK FOR 2015 Sunday, January 25th at Maffeo-Sutton Park.

What a beautiful sunny warm day we were blessed with to walk the dogs for the first walk of 2015. Thanks to everyone that came out, hope-fully you enjoyed it and so did your dogs. We walked the downtown section, along the wa-terfront and back up to the park. We were stopped by a lot of people who were quite inter-ested in all the dogs. The club walks are not just for purebreds so everyone come and join us with your dogs. Everyone was well behaved, both dogs and hu-mans. No poop was left anywhere to smudge the downtown core. Thanks to everyone.

We talked about getting some vests or bandana type stuff for the dogs to wear on the walk. A good idea worth investigating, I will check into it. Those who participated were: Leigh Smith and her two wonderful Borzois Hawker and Knightrow Janet Hicks and her beautiful Aussies Jesse and Tosh Darlene Wheat with her munchkins Brandy and Pepe Tom Ikeda with his lovely miniature schnauzers Pepper and Kuma Janice McAllan and her friendly, always tail wagging beagles Piper and Addy Val Harvey and her huge boy Rebus who stopped traffic Diane Brown and her two wonderful miniature schnauzers Sky and Bo Sandi Malcolm, and her miniature schnauzer Jackpot brought up the rear. A good suggestion from a conversation on the walk – always use bright gaudy poop bags to pick up your dog’s deposits, you can see them from a block away so everyone knows you are doing your civic duty. ~ by Sandi Malcolm

Westminster Kennel Club Nights

February 15 and 16th were the dates of this year’s Westminster Kennel Club show held in New York City. Each night we had 20 plus people attend to watch the show, enjoy a meal, and place their bets. The usual fanfare in New York was wonderful, the venue looked

fabulous on television, the dogs were all beautifully presented, gowns and tuxedos were out, shoes shined, and hair coiffed, both dog and humans. Some of the pre and post advertising on television showcased many breeds beautifully. Individual breed judging, group judging, Best in Show and agility class judging can be viewed on line at the Westminster Kennel Club site: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org Here in Nanaimo, we enjoyed the show from the Old City Pub downtown and all had a great time. We thank the pub for their great service and great location for the club. I think some of the regu-lar patrons of the pub found out more about dogs than they cared to. Loved the half price menu on Tuesday night. Lots of winners ( and losers too ) but great fun was had by all. There were some surprises in the results which made a few members really rich by winning over $6.00 each on the Best in Show bet. Congratulations to Jodi Justice for winning the Best in Show outfit; she won a $15.00 gift certifi-cate to the fabulous boutique down on Bruce Avenue, you may have heard of it the “VV” Great se-lection at great prices. The winner of Best in Show for 2015 was the 15”Beagle “Miss P” who never stopped wagging her tail. There was great celebration when this beautiful Beagle won out over the more highly visible candidates. AND she is from Enderby, B. C. Hoorah for B. C. Thanks to everyone for their wonderful donations, Cheryl and Nigel, you were so very generous again this year as were as so many club members that donated great prizes. Thanks all. ~ contributed by Sandi Malcolm

Exploring Nanaimo With Dogs

Sugar Loaf Mountain Park is found at the end of Marion Road, in the Departure Bay

area. A combination of stairs and steps lead up to the bluff, which overlooks

Departure Bay. While it is not off-leash, it does offer some interesting exercise

clambering over the rocks that make up the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Allow about an hour to get to and explore this park.

Unfortunately, given the terrain, this park is not

wheelchair accessible.

Bring snacks or a lunch. There is no water available at

the park itself, but refreshments are available at the

7-11 facing Departure Bay Beach.

Nanaimo Kennel club’s junior handlers rocked the

scene at the Victoria City Kennel Club show.

All of Nanaimo Kennel club junior handles did fabulously. To start with Panagiota

with Effie on Saturday and Sunday won 1st in Junior Novice. Then on Sunday the

crowds went crazy as little Miss Panagiota went into the breed ring showing her

own puppy and won against hard competition Winners Bitch, Best of Winners,

Best of Opposite, Best Puppy and Best Puppy in Group. This all gave her a 3pt

major on her first Canadian weekend out. In January Effie the puppy and

Panagiota made their AKC debut in Puyallup. They won Reserve Winners Bitch

on their very first day. They continued to win their class "owner handler" each

day.

Melanie rocked the scene on Saturday showing her own min pin that she trained

herself and defeating 2 very nice miniature pinschers, one handled by a

professional handler. This gave Melanie’s dog a 2 point major. Melanie then went

on to take second in Jr handlers open. On Sunday Melanie went on to a fabulous

win and took Best over all Junior handlers in the show.

Anna lee was in very hard competition and showed to perfection her miniature

pinscher whom she trained herself. Winning second place on Saturday and

third on Sunday in senior division.

Michayla also did very well at the show. This show was Michaylas very first dog

show competition. Mickayla placed second both days behind another NCK jr.

beating out 5 other Juniors. What a great first show for Michayla.

Nanaimo also had a peewee entry in the show , and boy she really worked hard

for her ribbon . Anastacia and Effie the puppy won every ones hearts as the ran

gleefully around the ring. The cute factor in full play!

Nanaimo Kennel club had a great showing of very accomplished Junior handlers.

Way to go, girls!.
