Namma Metro or Bangalore Metro is the under-construction mass-transit rail system for Bangalore.

The construction for metro has been divided in 4 phases.

On April 25th, 2006, the Indian Cabinet approved the metro with Rs.6300 cr.

On June 24th, 2006, Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for Phase-I.

The first line is to be opened in December 2010 between Baiyappanahalli and M.G.Road.

Phase I construction between Baiyappanahalli and Mysore Road is scheduled to be completed by 2012.

PHASE 1:- North-South - Yeshwantpur to R V Road, East-West - Mysore Road to Byappanahalli.

PHASE 2:- North extension - Yeshwantpur to Peenya, East extension - Mysore Road to Bangalore University, South extension - R V Road to J P Nagar, West extension - Byappanahalli to Whitefield.

PHASE 3:- Swastik to Yeshwantpur. PHASE 4:- K. R Market to R.V Road.

The estimated cost (in crores) of the project approved by the Government of India based on April 2005 prices as under:-

Construction cost: 5912 Interest during construction: 449 Financing charges & Pre-operative

expenses: 29 Total Current Cost: 6395

State: Rs 1807 cr Centre/Federal: Rs 1447 cr Financial Institutions: Rs 2953 cr Interest rate: Approx. 8.75% for a 15

year term loan, line of credit from insurance companies and provident fund agencies comes for 25 years at 9% interest.

 Funds are raised equally from the Japan

Bank International Cooperation (JBIC) and Indian funding agencies.

Mitsubishi: Traction for the coaches. Hyundai Rotem: Rolling Stock. BEML: Coaches. ABB Group: Design, supply, install and

commission four substations that receive and distribute electricity, each rated at 66/33 kV, as well as the auxiliary and traction substations.

Alstom Project India Limited (APIL): Control and signaling system for the first phase of the project.

Needs: To reduce traffic on roads. Make people to use public transport.

However, it is not a competitor for buses and instead help each other.
