A petition, concerning the high cost of electricity, the regular shack fires, overcrowding in Walvis Bay and the unaffordability of housing, was pre-sented by the Trade Union Congress of Namibia to the Walvis Bay Munici-pality on 1 October and progress was made in this regard.

Close to thousand erven for harbour townMarshallino Beukes

The petition primarily re-quested the Town Council to provide 8 000 serviced erven of 300 square me-tres each to residents and the provision of land to employers of such indivi-duals, who wish to con-struct houses for their em-ployees. Following the petition hand-over and demonstra-tion, the Town Council and representatives of TUCNA met last week to discuss the concerns. According to the Munici-pality, an invitation to the meeting had been issued to the group, prior to the demonstration, “but they (TUCNA) chose to conduct the protest march first”. At the meeting the Council pointed out that they are equally concerned about the plight of shack dwellers.

On the unaffordability of housing issue, it was in-dicated that the Council is constantly engaged in discussions with the Go-vernment and its principal representative in the hous-ing section, Namibia Hous-ing Enterprises (NHE), to address the provision of low cost housing. A statement regarding beneficiaries of the Mass Housing Programme is supposedly soon to be ex-pected. According to the Council, they have repeat-edly invited employers to apply for land in order to facilitate houses for their employees. “Some have heeded the call, but more need to be done,” the Municipality’sstatement reads. The Walvis Bay Munici-pality has availed about

1 600 erven for the Mass Housing Project and is currently busy to finalise the servicing of close to 1 000 erven, as part of its ongoing land development programme.“Thus, hundreds of erven will be available in Nar-raville, Kuisebmond and Meersig, within the next 2-6 months” the Munici-pality states. They furthermore claim that progress has been made in efforts to allevi-ate the plight of the poor, although with limited re-sources. They also noted that their door is wide open for serious social partners, such as the Trade Union Congress of Namibia, to become part of the solu-tion, and not only focus on highlighting the problems collectively faced.

The impact and ripple ef-fect supposedly resulted in enormous pressure on the part of clearing agents, to finally release cargo from shipping lines. Agents al-legedly had to swallow late fees, Namport over-time etc in order to get cargo out of the port. “No prior arrangements were made by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Asycu-da World and Customs to approach Namport, to allow additional hours for getting cargo out of the port” a source told the newspaper. Some port users also expressed their dismay, regarding the fact that the new system did not undergo a trial period, before being put to work. Also displeasing them, is the fact that training to work on the new system was supposedly provided only one week prior to implementation, and fur-thermore all the stakehold-ers received training alto-gether. This, according to them, was not appropriate,

as the different divisions, each have diverse func-tions. It is further alleged that some Customs of-ficers had to be trained af-ter implementation, while some other officers have not been trained fully to be 100% qualified to han-dle and work on the new system. The newspaper asked for comment from the Cus-toms & Excise Deputy Director, Ms Yoolokeni Haihambo, and during an exclusive interview, she noted that, “with any new development, hick-ups are inevitable”. Ms Haihambo further remarked that the main reason why agents, transporters, etc might be dissatisfied, is the fact that they did not have an Asycuda World comput-er at the gate, when the system was implement-ed. This was however sorted out and things are starting to run smoothly, she explained. The (old) Asycuda ++ System, ac-cording to Ms Haihambo,

was very time consuming, as Customs officials pre-viously had to depend on hard copies of Namport to register cargo. This hard copies were received after cargo entered through the gates and thus, provided a breeding ground for falsi-fied documents. “With the new system we are able to do the regis-tering ourselves and also verify and control the con-tainers, as well as serial numbers” Ms Haihambo commented. Regarding the short train-ing period, she stated that it is not a whole new sys-tem, but just an upgrading of the old one, with only some new functions being added. “There is no way we can move from a good system to a bad system, we have to keep trend with the latest technology and this system is definitely user friendly” Ms Haihambo stressed. She concluded by noting that no case of bribery was reported to her office.

Tension looms Continued from page 1The newspaper was con-

tacted on Tuesday by a relative of Pretorius to visit his residence for inspection on the behaviour of his dogs. When the reporter ar-rived at his residence, there were only three dogs on the property in question which all showed great affection towards the reporter in-stead of aggression. In con-versation with Pretorius at the time, he recalled what occurred on Monday.“Van der Merwe came to my house on Monday. It seemed that he was intoxi-cated. He told a friend of mine to “go call that ‘mof-fie’ that lives here”. When I saw him I told him to leave immediately. He did not leave, which resulted in me having to call for police assistance. When the po-lice arrived they instructed Van der Merwe’s friend, who accompanied him, to rather drive him home, be-cause he was intoxicated. Van der Merwe threatened me by saying he will bring his dogs and show me what his dogs can do. He only came to my house to cre-ate more havoc. I have laid a charge against him for trespassing (case number WBCR65102014),” Preto-rius said. When asked why he sus-pects that his gate is being opened by other parties he said “the only reason I can think of why anyone would want to open my gate is for the adult dogs to run away, in order to steal the puppies, as I am a breeder. I have put up warning signs that I have guard dogs. Any dog would protect his terri-tory. I love my dogs and do not want to lose them over people not wanting to leave

me and my dogs in peace. I feel sorry for the boy that was bitten. I hope he reco-vers soon. However people only talk about the boy that was bitten, but when will the parents teach children to stop teasing dogs, not to mention to try and steal the dogs or to leave my gate alone? Teach your children to leave the property of oth-ers alone. My dogs are not aggres-sive unless they are teased or harassed. My dogs are able to join with other dogs without any trouble occur-ring. I myself have a daughter of my own. Her friends who visit her have also been sur-rounded by my dogs. My dogs never attacked those children. This is the first time some-thing like this has hap-pened. I have learnt a les-son from this and that is to keep my gate under lock and chain, since people keep fiddling with my gate. Again I am sorry the child was bitten. The child knows in his heart what happened. All I ask is for people to leave me and my dogs alone,” he said. The newspaper contacted Van der Merwe for com-ment on the allegations against him.“I was at the boy’s house on Monday to ask if he was alright. After I left, my friend and I walked in the street and Pretorius came to us with a baseball bat and hit my friend over the head,” he said. When Van der Merwe was told that there are allega-tions by Pretorius that he went to Pretorius’ house, he

Meersig dog brawl continuesContinued from page 1

laughed and said that Pre-torius was standing outside the yard with a baseball bat and simply attacked them for no reason. The boy’s age was ques-tioned by the public since reports of the incident were published. It was confirmed by the boy’s father to the newspaper that the boy is indeed nine years old. “Van der Merwe went to Pretorius’ house on Mon-day because the gate was open once again. Van der Merwe went inside the yard with a friend to tell Pretorius to close his gate. Pretorius approached the man with a baseball bat. I have laid a charge against Pretorius for what tran-spired on Sunday,” the father alleged. The namib times spoke to the Walvis Bay SPCA Kennel Master and Investigating Officer, Mr Peter Brooks, regarding the behaviour of Pretorius' dogs.“Firstly, there has never been direct evidence or signs of dog fighting re-garding Logan’s dogs. Secondly, Logan has been very open towards us con-cerning his animals and their welfare.

I personally have never de-tected any aggression from these dogs towards myself or my staff members at the SPCA when we did inspec-tions. These dogs are not aggressive. We do body inspections on a regular basis whereby we handle the dogs ourselves and never have any of these dogs shown aggression to-wards us at all. There are clear sign boards on Logan’s gate as well that have been there for quite a period of time, warning that there are dogs on guard,” Brooks said. According to the Municipality Pretori-us recently agreed to obey the rules of all munici-pal regulations regarding his dogs. Nampol Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu told the newspaper yesterday that Pretorius was arrested on Wednesday morning un-der the municipality by-laws, which entail that a dog owner is obligated to keep the animal inside the premises. “He was arrested for re-leasing of a vicious dog, alternatively assault with intent to do grievous bod-ily harm,” Iikuyu said.

COMMUNITY NEWS24 OCTOBER 2014

The Marienheim hostel in Tamariskia, Swakopmund, which was scorched by a devastating fire on 19 January, this year, are cur-rently under re-construction, but more funds are needed.

The renovation of the hostel has been ongoing since August this year. The hostel is run by the Roman Catholic Church and a request for public assistance, in order to finish renovating the burned block, was recently reported on in the namib times. “Even though the renovation is ongoing, sometimes the builders stop because they run out of building materials” said Sister Reginalda Shivute of the Roman Catholic Church. She also said they need more donations for roof materials, paint, cement, etc. Sister Shivute also said that all donations given will be used for the welfare of the children. “We have turned the study hall into a bedroom for the boys and all the learners are now studying in the dining hall” she commented. All donations and forms of support are welcomed. If you want to assist, please contact Sister Shivute on 064 461 441/081 309 2617, or if you can assist financially the bank account is as follows; Bank Windhoek, Account Name: Marienheim Hostel. Swakopmund used to have one of the most beautiful train stations in the country, but not anymore.

Shameful state of TransNamib's new 'train station'Jade McClune

REAL WORLD: Following promises of great developments, a half-built concrete structure without any lights, services or signage now serves as the Swakopmund Railway Station.

Renowned for its sturdy architecture, the old station provided a grand welcome to new visitors arriving at the coast by train and left people with a strong first impression of the town and its heritage. People arriving by train today may well be a left with a sense of shock and horror at the situation.Over the years the service has deteriorated to a situation, where train pas-sengers now have to make their way to the industrial area, where they will have to cross at least three sets of railway tracks in the dark to get to a half-built structure that now stands in place of a proper train station. There is in fact no train station, just an incom-plete concrete structure

with no roof, no doors, no lights, or any service. Those approaching from the main road will literally have to climb onto the station platform by stan-ding on the tracks. There are no working lights at the platform or anywhere along the gravel route, rendering the place a major health and safety risk. There are also no security officers on duty and there are no visible road signs or markings anywhere to indicate the safe route to the so-called station. There are also no safety markings at the platform, not even to indicate the safe distance from the edge of the platform, nor any sign to indicate the name of the 'station'.The unpainted concrete structure offers no shelter

or comfort whatsoever to passengers. There are also no toilet facilities, forcing people who urgently need to relieve themselves to cross the railway tracks and relieve themselves in the open in the dark.Passengers arriving from Windhoek on Tuesday ex-pressed total disappoint-ment at the deteriorating level of TransNamib's service. On Monday an elderly businesswoman at the town, who did not want to be named, fell from the same platform and severely injured her leg and foot.Yesterday she was still on medication and confirmed that the condition of the half-built station presents a clear and present danger to the passengers, particularly the elderly and disabled. She is concerned that

others could be more seriously injured.Mr Paolo Shipoke of Stacks Property Group, who heads up the Bahnhof Square Development, said yesterday he is fully aware of the deplorable situation at the would-be station in Swakopmund. The creation of a modern new station was central to the design of the new Bahnhof Square Mall, but the project has run into major hurdles and as a result the town has in fact been left without a train station. “We would have finished

the station by now, but we stopped [due to a dispute with the ministry of works] and the funders said no funds would be released until the problems are sorted out.”“Everything would have been finished by now, but we had to stop on the orders of TransNamib,” he said, in reference to a recent deci-sion by the Minister of Works and Transport to review TransNamib's deci-sion to sell the large pro-perty to private developers. The minister reportedly considers the terms unfa-vourable.

As a result the entire Bahnhof Square develop-ment has ground to a complete halt. There is no indication of any ongoing earthworks and construc-tion. Shipoke said there is not much they can do under the circumstances and referred further questions to TransNamib.TransNamib, which put in place yet another 'turn-around strategy' last month, at the cost of some N$400 million to the taxpayer, has incurred massive costs and suffered reputational dam-age as a result of repeated train crashes, of which

there have been no less than five in the past two years.Getting timely answers from the management of the troubled parastatal has generally proven to be a challenge. TransNamib's spokesperson Ms Paulina Hangula said yesterday that she had just returned from a long period of leave and would answer as soon as she could. At the time of going to print, neither Trans-Namib nor the Ministry of Works and Transport had responded to questions sent to them yesterday.

Swakopmund

Two weeks ago, the Swakopmund commu-nity was shocked, after it was reported that Mrs Jonas, better known as Julia, was allegedly poi-soned by her estranged husband. The tragedy occurred on the morning of 8 Octo-ber, at around 00:20. Mrs Jonas and her es-tranged husband, Mr Junias Jonas, sup-posedly had maritalproblems, and although still legally married, have been separated for some time.

The late Julia had a protection order against her husband, which barred him from going near her or her residen-ce.The protection order fol-lowed after he attempt-ed to shoot Mrs Jonas during August, this year. Mr Jonas has since then moved to Karibib and re-turned home on the night of the incident. On his ar-rival, Mr Jonas allegedly brought drinks for him and his wife. After a while Mrs Jonas started screaming that

she was poisoned by her husband. She was rushed to the hospital, but unfor-tunately there was noth-ing the doctors could do, as she was already dead by the time she reached the hospital. Mr Jonas appeared in the Swakopmund Magis-trates court on Friday, 10 October, facing charges of murder and breaching of protection order. He was denied bail and is expected to ap-pear in court again on 8 December thisyear.

Standard Bank kliënte slaap glo hongerMarshallino Beukes

Obtaining Fishing Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations.WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters.Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

The statement serves as a reminder to those in-volved in these activities, that as per the Port Re-gulations and the Nam-port Act, stevedoring companies should be li-

censed by the Namibian Ports Authority, and only those in possession of such a license is allowed to conduct and carry out stevedoring activities. It further warns that

those who are found carrying out such ser-vices without the ne-cessary license will be stopped permanently from carrying out any activities in the Port.

Ship and Cargo agents involved in unlicensed activitiesMarshallino Beukes

The Namibian Ports Authority sent out a stern warning to some Ship and Cargo Agents, who are supposedly involved in stevedoring activities for which they are not allowed or licensed for.

Tourists from France were interviewed whilethey were busy taking pictures of the flamin-goes at the lagoon and according to them it was one of the high-lights of their two-week tour through Na-mibia. Even if you are not a bird watcher, you cannot help but be impressed by the sheer number of

birds flocking together. The namib times cap-

tured some of the tou-rists while they were

busy taking pictures or just strolling along the

walkway of our lovely lagoon.

While the coastline of Namibia is well known for its diamonds, wide open spaces and unspoilt nature, the birds at the Walvis Bay lagoon is as much a gem as any birder or photographer could possibly wish for.

oor hoe hul hul hond moet hanteer, beskerm, ens.

(G.......vol Vir Rondloper Honde!)

Hou Jou Hond, In Jou Yard, Vir Jouself!

Adri de Wee: Would his age even have helped him against the dog? The boy could have been killed and all you worry about is his age. You’re surely a clown.Beulah Pretorius: Adri and surely you must be the ring master! Read well before being sarcas-tic!Tanja Strong: The age of

the boy is irrelevant. Fact remains; someone was brutally attacked by dogs, in the street. The owner needs to take responsi-bility.Uta Himmel: Any dog that does this should be put down and the owners banned from having pets. Obviously they failed to raise these dogs right. This is just awful, should

someone be killed before action gets taken? Why weren’t the dogs re-moved the first time they attacked minors (chil-dren)?Kirsti Westerdale: The dogs should be taken away from this guy!He obviously has no idea on how to look after them.Fernando Santos Den-tlinger: I raised my dogs

proper yet when provoked will attack I witness kids the same age as the boy attacked walk pass my yard and tease my dogs to the point where my dogs get angry and open the gate.Adri de Wee: Kids will always be kids... Keep your damn dogs in your yard period. American copy cats.

“When our beloved country finally gained its indepen-dence after a bitter struggle, there was a sense of relief coupled with vigor among all peoples to make the country work. This is evi-denced by the drafting and acceptance of our national Constitution in a record time – a Constitution that is still hailed by the rest of the world as a model of its kind.”According to Mudge, our Constitution spells it out loud and clear. “Namibia belongs to all its people ir-respective of race, colour, age, sex, social standing or political affiliation. Our Constitution is a social con-tract which guarantees the human dignity of all Na-

mibians.” “However, it is sad to see these lofty ideals go up in the tyre smoke of the new luxury vehicles of the rul-ing elite.” Mudge stated that over the past 24 years, it is glaringly obvious that the ruling party has become increasingly arrogant in their approach to governing the country. “The ruling elite are a tight-ly knit group of individuals who are appropriating the country and its resources to feed their own greed and lust for power. Thus in an era where we see increased unemployment, especially among the youth, housing shortages, declining health care, endemic corruption, blatant nepotism and fa-

vouritism, poor service de-livery and faltering land re-form, the ruling elite decide that what the country needs most than anything else is another VIP jet, a new par-liament building, a private hospital for local VIP’s and visiting dignitaries, an en-larged parliament with yet more officials, a new fleet of luxury vehicles, an ex-orbitantly expensive retire-ment home for the outgo-ing president and “security upgrades for the dwellings of our rulers, to name but a few. Thus we also see the awarding of bursaries for the children of high rank-ing government officials to study in China and the “em-powerment” of the children

of high ranking Swapo of-ficials, as exposed in “The Namibian” of Friday 10 October” enabling them to become overnight million-aires with little effort and input.“True to the saying: ‘Power corrupts and absolute pow-er corrupts absolutely,’ the ruling party has become completely out of touch with the feelings, aspira-tions and needs of the com-mon people.”In a country with such a wealth of resources and such a low population den-sity as ours, problems such as a lack of school facilities in rural areas and the acute housing shortage experi-enced by the less fortunate, should have and could have

been resolved many years ago, if the ruling party had been serious about address-ing these issues,” Mudge claims. The problem is exacerbated by the appointment of per-sons to senior positions in accordance with political affiliation rather than qual-ifications, expertise and ex-perience.“This tide of expropriating the entire country by our rulers for their sole benefit must be stemmed and the forthcoming election pre-sents a golden opportunity for disillusioned voters to express their dissatisfaction on the ballot paper,” Mudge concluded. Pretorius’ dogs again in controversy A nine year old boy was admitted to the hospital on Sunday, afternoon after being bru-tally attacked and suffering more than 20 bite marks from dogs owned by Walvis Bay resident, Logan Pretorius.

Who Owns Namibia? In line with the election theme of the Republican Party, namely: “The time is now,” party president, HenkMudge, during his election campaign in the South of our country, hit hard at what he termed, “the ruling party’s increased propensity to claim Namibia for themselves as a form of ‘just,’ but decidedly undeserved reward.”

24 OCTOBER 2014

The brother and sister, who both grew up in Walvis Bay, have always had a passion for drama and being on stage. They surely have not al-lowed time to pass them by without grabbing the spotlight. Rodelio was one of the lucky few artists to make it through to the Top 8 of the Trustco Star Perfor-mer Talent Competition in 2013. He was the only drama contestant that made it through to the Top 8 and was to represent Nami-bia at the Applause Rising Talents Showcase (ARTS) convention in Orlando, Florida, USA.

He has since been seen in his first NTN role on the Main stage in the “Lam-mie Beukies” production, and then along with his sister Whilzhan in “Prime Colours,” which was per-formed at NTN Back-stage. The sibling duo again took on the stage together with the performance of “Colgate”, a Hugo Pro-ductions roadshow which travelled to the northern part of the country. One of his most recent performances were in “The Illusions of Gran-deur,” a 3 play production; “The Winning story,” “In-terviews with Loneliness” and “The Bear” respec-

tively, performed in one night. Rodelio will be attending The Namibian Theatre and Film awards on Sa-turday in the capital city, where he has been nom-inated for Best New-comer and Best male ac-tor, for his performances in “Prime Colours”. Through his busy sche-dule, Rodelio has still found the time to give back to the communityby investing time in CANSA and Shavathon charity events, along with being involved in shack fire round-ups to collect donations for shack fire victims.Whilzhan is a dedicated

UNAM student, trying to make name for herself. She performed in “Bald Soprano,” a Theatre Zone Production directed by Michelle Namases, who has been nominated for Best Director, at NTN Backstage. She also performed along with her brother in “Col-gate” and “Prime Col-ours”. Then came her big break by playing a role in her first film, “Katutura” by Florian Schott. She also took the stage in the “Wize-up” and “Mwenyopaleka” road-shows in the North in co-operation with O&L and Laurinda Olivier-Samp-son.

She also invested time in the Dream Big campaign with the Namibian Po-lice. There is no doubt that the

future will only be bright-er for the clearly talented brother and sister, with their hard work and de-dication to their careers

as proudly Namibian actors. They both serve as in-spiration to our youth of Walvis Bay.

Metal farm scene by Rinus Henery

Walvis Bay has quite a number of artists involved in music, painting or wri-ting. However, Mr Rinus Henery (31) has brought art to the coast in a diffe-rent way. He spends his time ma-king portraits out of me-tal, mostly steel. He grew up at the coast and has recently moved back to Walvis Bay after living on a farm in Namibia. He remarked that his pas-sion for this particular art form has developed since living on the farm and be-ing interested in steel and metal work while being surrounded by nature. According to him, since selling his work at an expo in Windhoek in July this year, the interest in his work has grown tre-mendously.“My inspiration grew while I was surroundedby nature and wild ani-mals. I was always in-terested in working with

steel or metal thus I de-cided to do something different with these mate-rials. I have been creating art pieces out of metal by free-hand. It can be used in the gar-den, a lapa, or for all sorts of interior decora-ting. I also give treatment against rust therefore it is quite suitable for the coast. It has a five to ten year guarantee against rust. I simply love what I do. It is very pleasing to know that my work is well-liked,” he said.He started out approxi-mately three years ago with a partner, but accord-ing to him he has been working solo for the past eight months.“I definitely see myself going further in what I do. My target market in-volves lodges, hotels and bed and breakfast facili-ties. Individuals are also welcome to bring any ideas of what they would

like to have made out of metal and I will create an art piece from that. This is where I mostly get my ideas from. It is good to know that there is a lot of interest in what I do. It is something different and it feels good to look back at a project that I have com-pleted and to know that it is my own hand work,” he concluded.

Hier sieht man

Mitt-

-,,Ach was, man braucht keine Batterien.”

Wednesday morning was a proud moment for Narraville Primary School (NPS) as they inaugurated their first library and 2 new classrooms, sponsored by Namport.

Narraville inaugurates libraryPiquet Jacobs

The school celebrated the inauguration of their brand new library and 2 classrooms with a morning ceremony. The school’s new infrastructure addition was sponsored by Namport through their Social Investment Fund (NSIF), which was established in 2006 and focuses on education, health and

entrepreneurial deve-lopment. The fund has thus far invested over N$20 million across the country since its inception. The NSIF made a generous contribution of N$800 000 fol-lowing a request by NPS to construct a library. The school put the contribution to good use, as they man-aged to build a library and two additional classrooms with the amount.

“As part of its contri-bution to vision 2030, Namport is committed to capacity building and skills development in our country; we believe a country can only be as developed as the capacity of its human resources.

Jou suster: Sarie & kinders

Jou broer: Willie

Our hearts still ache with sadness, and secret tears still flow.No one will ever know what it means to lose you.No farewells were spoken, we never said goodbye. You were gone before we knew and only God knows why.You sister: Joanie, Owen & children

Jou suster: Magdalene, Romey & Ricardo

This day always to remember, so sad to re-call.When the family chain is broken, nothing is the same. But as God calls us one by one, we link the chain again. We will miss her and always will. She left a place no one call fill.Your sister: Margareth, Derek & children

Jou plek bly leeg, jou stem is stil. Rus sag by Jesus tot ons weer mekaar ontmoet.Van: Ellie Coleman

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in

every thought and prayer. May the peace which comes from the memories of

love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

We are thinking of you during this difficult time. Words seem inadequate to express the

sadness we feel.

You have my deepest sympathies on the death of your loved one.

NAMIB TIMES 35 24 OCTOBER 2014

This is a golf competition with a difference, as the players are drawn into two teams and every play-er must then go and make as many stableford points for his team. As it turned out the com-petition was very closely contested with the run-

ners up accumulating 185 points and the winning team of Nicky, Flip, Frik, Francois, Piet, Tim, Diet-er and Achmet accumu-lating 193 points. The best individual score for the day was played by Achmet Abrahams with 41 points and second was

Attie Esterhuizen with 37 points. Unfortunately At-tie was drawn in the los-ing team.A very special thanks to Riaan van Rooyen and Paul Schrader from Bank Windhoek for their gene-rous sponsorship.

(Fltr) Nicky Traut, Flip Beukes, Frik van Rooi, Francois Loots, Piet vd Westhuizen, Tim Botha, Dieter Guidehus and Achmet Abrahams.

Bank Windhoek Senior Golf CompetitionRossmund Golf NewsLast week Thursday the senior golfers had their first Bank Wind-hoek sponsored golf day on the Rossmund Golf Course, outside Swakopmund. The competition drew 16 players and it is sure to grow in popularity in the months to come.

“We have worked with the NTTA over the last couple of years and we are proud to be associated with them. We hope that we can build on this relationship”, said Ingrid Goeieman, FNB Manager for PR and Sponsorship. Goeieman urged the NTTA to further expand this event in the future to the different regions and schools. The inter-school cham-pionship is one of the NTTA’s prime youth de-velopment events. The competition is an annual event which takes place at a different venue each

year. This year the cham-pionships are taken to Stampriet in the Hardap Region. This small town is home to some of the finest and most committed young table tennis athletes in Namibia and it made a lot of sense to host it in their home town.Close to 40 youngsters from ten different schools have confirmed their par-ticipation. They will battle it out in the girls and boys division. Despite being a first for Stampriet, a very exiting competition is expected with no clear favorites. Spectators and players

alike can look forward to very competitive ta-ble tennis. formed well and the hun-dreds of spectators could feast their eyes on some good running. One of the organisers of the event, Erongo regional director of sports Berthold Karumendu told Nampa after the event he is “more than happy” with how it turned out as he has a vi-sion for the town and for sport in general.

“I’m telling you the race will grow. Almost 600 ath-letes entered for this year’s Erongo Powersave Street Mile,” he said.Karumendu said he is convinced that there are a lot of undiscovered talen-ted athletes in Namibia. One such athlete who took part in Saturday’s race was from a rural area close to Omatjete

in the Erongo Region. “Hans Bee, a San boy from the Kangwe Primary School in the Erongo Re-gion came first in the pri-mary boys category. I want to call on the busi-ness community to come on board and invest in ath-letes like this,” he said.Bee, who ran the race without running shoes, completed the street mile

“Poaching of rhino, ele-phant, lion and pango-lin is on the increase in Namibia and we need to raise awareness” said Bobby. By attempting this ex-treme swimming venture,“with the campaign cal-led Strokes for Earth, we aim to not only raise awareness globally but al-so to raise funds for anti-poaching measures and combating wildlife crimein Namibia” she quoted.Bobby has crossed the 45 km English Channel in 1999 within 13 hours and 51 minutes, swam around Manhattan Island in the USA and swam from Catalina Island to Main-land California. For the African Crown she crossed the 16.7 km Strait of Gibraltar and comple-ted the swim within three

hours and 53 minutes, on 9 October this year. Next year Bobby and two other Namibian la-dies, Sandy le Roux fromSwakopmund and Anita Vermeulen from Wind-hoek, will attempt a two way crossing of the Eng-lish Channel, that’s from England to France and back again, in one go. This will be a first in the record books and they will also be the first Na-mibian team to swim the English Channel. The Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming includes three of the most well-known marathon swims, 34 km across the English Channel, 32.3 km between Catalina Is-land and the mainland in Southern Califor-nia, USA, and 45.9 km around the Manhattan

Island in New York City, USA.The crown has been achieved by one South African male swimmer and a total of 86 swim-mers before. The African Triple Crown is simply a geographi-cal difference from the original Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, except that to complete this crown the swimmer needs to swim around Manhattan Island. In 2016 Bobby will swim from Catalina Island to Mainland California. This is a 33km swim and also the final leg of the African Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Once successful Bobby will be the first African Female to achieve this and give her entry into the elite club of less than

one hundred people glo-bally to achieve this. There are many people out there raising funds for good causes but what puts this project on a dif-ferent level is that these three swimmers are tack-ling extreme challengers which few people dare to try. “We welcome all dona-tions both big and small and should there be any company out there that believes in our vision and would like to come on board then they may con-tact us,” said Bobby. You can reach them on their facebook page called Strokes for Earth or through Bobby on 081 296 0252.The core of their initia-tive drives from Bo-jos Café in Swakop-mund.
