Mindfulness and Mental Health
“You practice mindfulness, on the one hand, to be calm and peaceful. On the other hand, as you
practice mindfulness and live a life of peace, you inspire hope for a future of peace.”~ Thich Nhat
Hanh
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s writings often address mindfulness and living in the present
moment. When we allow our minds to reside in the future, we run the risk of increasing our
anxiety. In the same way, when we dwell on the past, depression may easily take root. Staying in
the present is the great equalizer.
So what is mindfulness anyway?
A mindfulness research center at UCLA defines the term as “paying attention to present moment
experiences with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is… It invites us to stop,
breathe, observe and connect with one’s inner experience.”
Mindfulness may be practiced as an individual or part of a group experience.
How can mindfulness help me?
Mindfulness studies show a connection to mental health benefits by way of decreased anxiety,
improved focus, and less emotional reactivity, reports the American Psychiatric Association.
Therapy based on mindfulness is being used to prevent relapse in depression; in addition,
mindfulness is currently being used to treat substance abuse. Additionally, mindfulness practices
are also being used to help a person’s concentration or to refocus when the mind wanders.
What can I do to practice mindfulness?
A popular, free app for a smartphone is “Virtual Hope Box.” Under the heading Relax Me, there
are exercises for deep, controlled breathing as well as guided meditations. Inspirational quotes
are also available on the app.
Another source to help develop a practice can be found on the website http://www.mindful.org/
meditation/mindfulness-getting-started/ . While the site does offer some CDs that you can
purchase, it also gives you some free pointers on the basics to help create a practice. As we focus
on our daily activities, remember the words of the mindfulness master:
“Don’t do any task in order to get it over with. Resolve to do each job in a relaxed way, with all your
attention. Enjoy and be one with your work.”

National Alliance on Mental Illness
It is the mission of NAMI Gulf Coast to provide support, education, and
service advocacy for families and individuals affected by mental illness.
Eliminating the stigma of mental illness is the primary goal for NAMI Gulf
Coast. The hope is that one day mental illness will be treated with the same
compassion and understanding as any other illness.
