Each Punch Bowl serves up to six (6) portions

Originating from India in the late 17th century, the British Empire (mostly her sailors) introduced to her colonies and the Rest of the World a universal and potent colonial drink called punch.

Originating from the Hindustani word ‘panch’ (meaning five) – this traditional East Indian beverage was based on the marriage of five key ingredients: spice, lemon juice, water or tea, sugar and the highly potent local liquor called ‘Arrack’ (a mixture of rice and sugarcane distillate)

Spreading this easy recipe from port to port like bees spreading pollen, the original punch recipe of the Indies was tinkered with, of course, and many came to consider themselves ‘master punch brewers’. The result, a slew of party punch recipes as colorfully named as any seafarers vocabulary.

Once it reached the shores of Americas, this easy to drink beverage became quite the rage of high society with American socialites soon taking a shine to punch, replacing Arrack with rum resulting in some famous punch concoctions still available today.

Describing a rum punch recipe is the way to illustrate the idea of sweet-and-sour cocktails:

“One sour, Two of sweet, Three of strong, Four of weak”
