RELIGION AND PEOPLE MODULE 1 What type of influences shape people?

Read the following… Throughout their life each person experiences a range of influences that shape who they are and how they live. Religion can be one of these influences contributing to the development of a person. This can occur in many different ways but in general, as with other influences, it is through the circumstances of a person’s life, other people, events and ideas encountered, that they are influenced by religion.

Complete this Five-Minute Quiz: Try to think of at least 5 different influences in your life to date and of your favourite hero: music star/sports star… older brother/cousin.

HOW ONE BECOMES A SAINT? 1.When a person dies who has "fame of sanctity" or "fame of martyrdom," the Bishop of the Diocese usually initiates the investigation. One element is whether any special favour or miracle has been granted through this candidate saint's intercession. 2.The Church will also investigate the candidate's writings to see if they possess "purity of doctrine," essentially, nothing heretical or against the faith. All of this information is gathered, and then a transumptum, a faithful copy, duly authenticated and sealed, is submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints 3.Once the cause is accepted by the Congregation, further investigation is conducted. If the candidate was a martyr, the Congregation determines whether he died for the faith and truly offered his life in a sacrifice of love for Christ and the Church. 4.In other cases, the congregation examines to see if the candidate was motivated by a profound charity towards his neighbour and practiced the virtues in an exemplary manner and with heroism. 5.Throughout this investigation the "general promoter of the faith," or devil's advocate, raises objections and doubts which must be resolved. Once a candidate is declared to have lived life with heroic virtue, he may be declared Venerable. 6.The next step is beatification. A martyr may be beatified and declared "Blessed" by virtue of martyrdom itself. Otherwise, the candidate must be credited with a miracle. 7.In verifying the miracle, the Church looks at whether God truly performed a miracle and whether the miracle was in response to the intercession of the candidate saint. 8.Once beatified, the candidate saint may be venerated but with restriction to a city, diocese, region, or religious family. Accordingly, the Pope would authorize a special prayer, Mass, or proper Divine Office honouring the Blessed. 9.After beatification, another miracle is needed for canonization and the formal declaration of sainthood. 10.In all, we must not lose sight that this thorough process exists because of how important the saints are as examples for us, the faithful who strive to live in the Kingdom of God now and see its fulfilment in Heaven. Vatican II declared, "God shows to men, in a vivid way, His presence and His face in the lives of those companions of ours in the human condition who are more perfectly transformed in the image of Christ.

PILGRIMAGE A pilgrimage is a journey, often to a holy place. The place is usually where

events have happened in the past that are relevant or important to what people

believe.

Two examples of pilgrimages are: The Holy Land and Mecca. Many Christians

and Jews travel to the Holy land to visit the places significant to their religions

and all Muslims are expected to visit Mecca, the birthplace of Mohammed, at

least once in their lifetime if possible.

People who try to sincerely live as Jesus taught could be described as being on

a pilgrimage. This means that they travel along the road of their belief and

experience all that the Church offers.

Below is a list of three (3) of the holy places Christian pilgrims visit. Give

a short history of these pilgrimages and why they are important.

THE LONG WALK

On 21 November 2004 Michael Long embarked on an historic trek, walking from his home in the suburbs of Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra – more than 650 kilometres away. He took it upon himself to get Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda and resolved to meet with Prime Minister John Howard to discuss his concerns… even if he had to walk all the way to Canberra to do it. Michael was joined on the road by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal supporters from all over Australia. Some walked in support for an hour, some for a day and some walked all the way to Canberra. As the walkers passed through the Victorian countryside, local people came out to meet them, offering encouragement, support and assistance. Seeing Aboriginal and other Australians rallying together, Michael’s Long Walk became a mission of hope. The group started walking out of frustration and pain but as they walked, they began to understand that Australians from all walks of life had been looking for a way to express their support for Aboriginal culture for a long time. When he heard about this amazing journey, the Prime Minister agreed to meet Michael when he arrived in Canberra. The Long Walk officially came to an end on Thursday, 2 December 2004 as the walkers arrived in Canberra. The final leg wound its way through the heart of the city and the weary walkers were joined by thousands of supporters as they made their way to the Prime Minister’s office. On Friday, 3 December 2004 Michael Long finally met with Prime Minister John Howard.
