English 9 Romeo and Juliet – Act V Reading Activity

Directions: Read through the summaries for Act V and use the provided readings to respond to the questions/prompts on this handout. Be careful to provide textual evidence where needed. Previously on Romeo and Juliet – Juliet goes to the Friar for help. His plan is for her to agree to marry Paris and the night before the wedding drink this vile of liquid – which will make her appear dead when her family comes to wake her for her wedding!!! Her family will bury her, and the Friar will send letter to Romeo in Mantua to come get Juliet from the Capulet vault. Lord Capulet is so thrilled Juliet is agreeing to marry Paris he decides to move up the wedding to the following day (Wednesday)!! Juliet drinks the potion that night. The next morning, her family finds her “dead” and makes plans to bury her. And now, Act V: The Finale ………………… Act V, scene 1 – We find Romeo in Mantua when his servant Balthsar shows up with news of Juliet’s death and her burial in the Capulet vault. Distraught at the news, Romeo tells Balthsar to get him a horse. After writing a letter, Romeo goes searching for an apothecary to sell him poison. Romeo finds an apothecary so poor he is willing to sell Romeo poison even though it could mean death if caught. Romeo leaves Mantua to return to Verona. Act V, scene 2 – Friar John shows up at Friar Lawrence’s office. He was supposed to deliver the Friar’s letter to Romeo but instead got quarantined in the house of someone with the plague (Suddenly, this part of the play has become RELATABLE!). Friar realizes Romeo does not know of the plan and decides he must go to the Capulet vault to get Juliet when she wakes up. Act V, scene 3 – Paris arrives outside the Capulet vault. He is there to lay flowers at Juliet’s tomb. He hears noises and hides in the graveyard. Romeo and Balthsar show up. Romeo gives Balthsar a letter for his dad and tells him to leave. Romeo opens the Capulet vault and Paris appears before he can go inside. Paris tries to make a citizen’s arrest, but Romeo refuses and says leave me alone. Paris insists, and they fight. Romeo kills Paris. Romeo now enters the vault where Juliet’s body lies….. Read through the rest of scene 3. In the margins, you will find reading questions. Answer questions on a separate document – complete sentences – and submit to Turn It In. Note that the text on the left is Shakespeare’s original text and the text on the right is No Fear’s “translation” of the lines.

In the rest of the scene – The police head out to investigate the grounds. They eventually return with Balthsar and the Friar just as the Capulets, Montagues, and the Prince show up. Lord Montague reveals that Lady Montague had died that night of grief over Romeo’s exile. The Prince demands the Friar tell them what he knows. The Friar recounts the events of their secret marriage, Romeo’s banishment and hideout in Mantua, Juliet’s plan, and other details. Balthsar gives the Prince Romeo’s letter, which tells of their secret marriage, Juliet’s death, and him buying poison. Capulet and Montague realize their fighting has led to this end and shake hands. Capulet agrees to put up a statue of Romeo and Montague agrees to put up a statue of Juliet next to Romeo. The end!
