LIFELINE REQUEST

‘Allow folks staying in MMR, withtwo vax shots to travel on trains’

SHASHANK [email protected]

With the state governmentthinking of easing restric-tions from June, the rail-way passenger associationsare demanding that at leastpeople staying in Mumbai’sMetropolitan Region(MMR) should be allowed totravel on local trains. Theyhave also suggested thatpeople who have taken twovaccination shots and havea valid certificate should beallowed on trains. These areapart from those peopleworking on essential duties. At present people staying

in far off places in MMR,like on Thane-Kalyan-Kar-jat/Kasara route on theCentral Railway and Bori-vali-Virar-Dahanu on West-ern Railway face a tough

time travelling. This is thesame for those on essentialduties. According to therailway authorities, thereare people who travel ille-gally without valid ID proofand fake IDs, for work de-spite being disallowed. The passenger associa-

tions claim that one of thebiggest reasons is that thelivelihood of people are se-verely hit. In a letter to

Chief Minister UddhavThackeray, the commuterbody Federation of Subur-ban Railway Passengers As-sociation has said that the‘Break the Chain’ formulais frustrating for those liv-ing beyond Kalyan. “Wehave approached both theIndian Railways and Maha-rashtra government urgingthem to allow at least thosewho stay beyond Kalyan in

MMR, to travel in localtrains from June. We havebeen suggesting them to gofor staggered office timing, which shall ease the situa-tion,” said its presidentNandkumar Deshmukh. The local trains (aka life-

line) is the only mode oftransport for people and therailways have been catchingfor ticketless travel and with-out valid documents everyday. “The railways shouldgive travel authority and is-sue daily tickets to those whoproduce vaccination certifi-cates of both doses,” saidShailesh Goyal, memberZonal Railway Users Consul-tative Committee. The passenger associa-

tions state that they shouldalso include few riders onthis, like people who com-plete the second dosage

should wait for 15-17 daysbefore travel; certificatesshould be kept handy at alltimes etc. At present theCentral and Western Rail-ways together are ferrying16-20 lakh people on essen-tial duties everyday whichis over 20 per cent. “How long will railways

and the state governmentprevent people from usingthe trains. There is a needto allow people staying infar suburbs to be allowed totravel in local trains. Therailways should innovatethe methods of train travel, access control, create quotasystems with limited tick-ets per hour and run trainservices as per peak/non-peak hours,” said SiddeshDesai, vice-president of theMumbai Rail PravasiSangh.
