ACTIVE GRANTS:

Principal Investigator, “Enhancing the Value of VA’s new Uniform Package of Services for Substance Use

Disorders”. Department of Veterans Affairs, Health Services Research and Development Service,

HX-12-001. Direct Cost $3,100,000, 10/2012-9/18.

This “CREATE” center is an interconnected suite of 4 grants which employ a range of research methods to

study quality-improving innovations in the care of substance use disorder patients. The individual grants address

improving health care quality metrics (Project PI: Alex Sox-Harris), managing national funding and policy (Project

PI: Steve Pizer), improving the care of alcohol misusing Hepatitis C patients (Project PIs: Humphreys and

Cucciare) and facilitating the transition from detoxification to ongoing clinical care for addiction (Project PI:

Timko). Dr. Humphreys is the overall PI of the CREATE as well as one of the two PIs of one of the components.

Principal Investigator, “Senior Research Career Scientist Award”. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services

Research and Development Service, RCS 04-141-3, 7/2017-6/2024. Direct cost: $1,500,000.

This career development award supports Dr. Humphreys’ pursuit of health services research projects. Dr.

Humphreys is one of five health services researchers in the VA nationally to hold the senior level for this career

research award. This grant runs for 7 years and is renewable indefinitely.

Principal Investigator (Multiple PI award joint with Drs. Brian Knutson and Rob Malenka, “Neurochoice:

Controlling Addictive Choice – from Circuits to Policy. Stanford Neurosciences Institute, 7/1/2017

-12/30/2021, Direct Cost: $4,800,000.

This interdisciplinary collaboration bridges16 Stanford faculty in 10 departments who conduct and

translate addiction research. This includes circuit-focused work with animals, human clinical trials and imaging

studies, and a policymaker network designed to translate science into better drug policy.

Direct Cost: $70,000.

This grant supports a section on mental health policy in the Stanford Psychiatry Department which is

directed by Dr. Humphreys. The section provides relevant scientific evidence to policymakers who address mental

illness and addiction.

Principal Investigator, “Evaluating a Social Impact Bond for Mental Health”. Irvine Foundation/County of Santa

Clara, 9/2014-6/2022. Direct Cost: $600,000

This grant supports the planning, design and implementation of a randomized evaluation of an innovative

social impact bond-funded intervention for seriously mentally ill individuals who repeatedly access emergency

and inpatient psychiatric services

Co-Principal Investigator, “Wearable Technology for Mental Health”, (PI: Zhenan Bao), Stanford Catalyst Grand

Challenges Grant, 7/2017-7/2018. Direct Cost: $410,000.

This grant brings together a cross-school team to engineer a wearable monitor tracking mental health

states and lays the groundwork for a potential 2-year extension involving testing with psychiatric patients.

Co-Investigator, “Impact of Health Reform on Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Programs”, (PI: Peter

Friedmann), National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH, R01 DA034634-01, 5/13-1/18.

This project is examining the impact of the Affordable Care Act and other recent health policy changes on

the structure, process and funding of outpatient substance use disorder treatment in the United States.

Co-Investigator, “Effectiveness of a Rescue Medication in Preventing Opioid Overdose in Veterans”, (PI: Elizabeth

Oliva), Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Service, HX002193-01A1, 1/1/2017

This project is evaluating the national rollout of naloxone distribution in the VA health care system and

developing a risk score indicating when it prescribing it to pain patients is effective and cost-effective.

This project is converting an existing evidence-based tool for caregiver support and training to an

Internet-accessible format and evaluating it with patients and their caregivers.

Co-Investigator, “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for the Treatment of Veterans with Alcohol Use Disorders”,

This clinical trial will evaluate whether transmagnetic brain stimulation reduces substance use and

associated psychiatric symptoms in patients being treated for addiction.
