Name: Alkinoos Athanasiou, MD, MSc, PhD Nationality / Country of residence: Greece Place of Work: - Lab of Medical Physics, Faculty of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - Interbalkan Medical Center, Thessaloniki Specialization: Neurosurgery Member of EUROSPINE since: 2017 Fellowship: October 2017 Clinique de Neurochirurgie, Centre Hospitalier Régional Universitaire de Lille, France Prof. Richard Assaker Thessaloniki, 27 October 2017 My name is Alkinoos Athanasiou and I am a recently board-certified neurosurgeon in Greece and a member of EUROSPINE since this year. After completing my residency in the Department of Neurosurgery of AHEPA University General Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece, I am operating under the guidance of Prof. Ioannis Magras in the Interbalkan Medical Center. Our focus in private practice lies on spine operations and my field of specialization is developing upon spinal pathologies including trauma and degenerative disease. I also work as a research associate in the Lab of Medical Physics, Faculty of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, under my advisor Prof. Panagiotis D Bamidis, where my main research project deals with assistive robotics for spinal cord injury patients. In October 2017, thanks to the EUROSPINE Short Term Fellowships program, I got the unique opportunity to attend a two weeks time alongside one of the great spine Masters of our time – Prof. Richard Assaker in Clinique de Neurochirurgie, Centre Hospitalier Régional Universitaire de Lille, France. It was a pleasure to participate in such a program, which allowed me to acquire both theoretical knowledge and technical expertise in many aspects of spine pathologies and in all stages from diagnosis to treatment, including my participation to the activities of the spinal staff and hands-on exposure. It can be said that above all, the teachings I received from Prof. Assaker during my short stay induced a personal paradigm shift, especially with regards to management of adult deformity and sagittal balance. During this time I was involved in many staff activities including outpatient clinic, case discussion, decision-making process, patient care and surgery. I was also given the opportunity to scrub in and assist during some selected and interesting cases. As such, I got practical exposure to techniques completely novel to my practice so far, such as bipolar thoraco/sacroiliac instrumentation and different kinds of osteotomies for treatment of adult deformity. Especially interesting was to observe and, more importantly, be taught the rationale underlying minimal invasive lumbar operations, including laminotomy for stenosis and discectomy. The use of O-arm and MRI-based neuronavigation in spine surgery is another important aspect of spinal operative setup that I got access to that finds wide application in degenerative disease and complex spinal trauma as well. I also especially value the theoretical lectures that the professor gave, during my visit, on sagittal balance basics and biomechanics, computation and treatment of deformity, as well as on cervical spine balance, topics that few centers have the experience to successfully apply and teach. I would like to sincerely thank Prof. Richard Assaker for his intensive mentorship during my short stay in Lille, as well as his team for their hospitality. I would also like to thank Prof. Ioannis Magras who suggested and insisted that I attend this fellowship under Prof. Assaker and also the EUROSPINE Education and Fellowship Committee that provided me with this opportunity. I hope that I will be able to put all my recently acquired knowledge to good use, for the benefit of spine patients under my care and for the sake of improving the quality of provided care in my practice and in spinal surgery in my home country in general.
