A Brief History

Naivasha is derived from a Maa word-E-na-iposha, that means heaving waters. (This

refers to the unpredictable nature of L. Naivasha.)

Lake Naivasha was discovered by Joseph Thomson in 1884.

Naivasha town has been in existence since 1904.

That makes Naivasha town 106years old!

Information gathered from documents available at the National Archives in Nairobi.

Examples of Successful International Festivals

The Notting Hill Festival/Carnival• In 1958, there were race riots in Nottingham, prompting racist

attacks in the Notting Hill area.

• In 1959, Claudia Jones, organized an indoor Caribbean Carnival at St Pancras Town Hall. This was broadcast by BBC on its Six Five Special Program.

• Later, in the mid 1960’s, Rhuane Laslett, organized an outdoor carnival procession as part of the Notting Hill Summer Festival.

• This, outdoor procession is generally viewed as the start of the modern Notting Hill Carnival.

BENEFITS FOR NAIVASHA TOWN

OREGANO EVENTS- NAIVASHA PROPOSAL-MAY 2010

Page 24: Naivasha Flower Festival

What’s in it for Naivasha Town?

This festival is set to reposition the image of Naivasha Town-from its current negative perception during PEV, to an investor friendly, forward looking, and able to accommodate diverse cultures.

The first theme for the festival- ‘My Naivasha’ aptly captures what the residents of Naivasha currently think of the town and the next strategic step would be to involve all the relevant stakeholders in using this outcome to build a more positive image of the residents and visitors.
