YEAR 6 TRANSITION

Over two Wednesdays Year 6 students from Gunnedah South, Gunnedah, Boggabri, Curlewis, Carroll and Mullaley schools visited Gunnedah High for a full day of transition activities.

Students participated in a range of activities including a sci-ence experiment to design a boat that could float 100 marbles, making sherbet, learning about (and cuddling!) baby chicks, wrapping a student as a mummy and a fun visual arts class.

The next transition event will be the "Back to School" night on Wednesday, July 31.

NSW SCHOOLS TITRATION COMPETITION

On Tuesday, June 18 Miss Constable accompanied nine students to the state-wide science competition the NSW Schools Titration Competition in Quirindi.

Students competed in teams of three and in 90 minutes undertook a set of acid-base titrations to determine the unknown concentration of a weak acid. The teams score depended on the accuracy of the work of its members. The best score won medals for the team.

All teams performed at a high standard today, which shows their resilience and their ability to be challenged. The competition is well aligned with the new Chemistry Sylla-bus.

Titration is the slow addition of one solution of a known concentration (called a titrant) to a known volume of another solution of unknown con-centration until the reaction reaches neutralization, which is often indicated by a colour change.

The friendly rivalry between Gunnedah High School and St Mary's College is set to add another chapter to its storied history at Wolseley Oval on Thursday, July 4.

Both schools will take to the field to battle it out in an annual AFL match for the coveted Brian Lenton Shield.

Named after Gunnedah AFL legend Brian Lenton, the game has seen many great highlights in previous years, with St Mary's taking home the top prize in 2018.

Gunnedah High School's coach Sam Proudfoot said his side was eager to seek redemption for last season's loss.

"I think everyone from both sides is pretty excited for this year's game," Proudfoot told the Namoi Valley Inde-pendent.

"This year, we have had a couple of our guys in Ash White and Zak Turnbull play with the Gunnedah Bulldogs on the weekends, which should hold them both in good stead."

St Mary's will not be without experi-enced players on their side, with Hayden Baker, Jasper Thomas and Tom Maher all regularly starring for the Bulldogs this season.

Proudfoot said this year's game, like

those in the past, will be part of both schools NAIDOC Week commemorations.

"It's going to be a fantastic day for both schools," he said.

"For us it will be a very special game as our jerseys have been designed by Ash White.

"They will feature a Goanna totem and really do look fantastic.

"We will be having a welcome to country and cultural acknowledgement ceremony before the game at 1.30pm, so it should be a great day."

Congratulations to Year 11 student Kaytlyn Murrell who was announced as Debutante of the Year at the Gunnedah Swimming Club Ball. A number of other GHS students participated in the annual event.

One of Gunnedah's fastest rising cricket stars is set to strut his stuff on a tour of the United Kingdom.

Gunnedah High School student Adam McGuirk recently set off on the tour with the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) open-age men's cricket team.

Plying his trade during the summer for Old Boys Cricket Club in the Tamworth District Cricket Association, McGuirk made a strong case for selection with several strong performances.

Also helping his push for selection was a starring performance for Central North

during the country championships earlier in the year.

The young batsman also performed well during the Gunnedah District Cricket Association's annual Twenty20 competi-tion, acting as a co-captain for his side.

The tour will see the NSW side come up against some of the best junior crick-eters Australia and the United Kingdom has to offer.

McGuirk will compete on the tour throughout the coming weeks.www.nvi.com.au

Our chess team participated in the inter-school challenge at Calrossy recently and performed really well.

Due to space limitations we could only bring six students, but we were very competitive.

Our three seniors, Cameron, Desmond and Khyle, all won five out of seven games and the very last match of the day saw Desmond pitched against the day's winner, with the whole event crowded around their game watching every move!

Our junior players all won a few games each. Khyle even came home with a nifty trophy. Looking forward to our next tour-nament! – Mrs Harris

INTER-SCHOOL CHESS CHALLENGE

Hints to assist students improve their Literacy and Numeracy skills

What is literacy? Literacy is the ability to read and

use written information and to write appropriately in a range of situ-ations. It involves the integration of speaking, listening and critical thinking with reading and writing.

Each subject has its own literacy demands, e.g. writing up an exper-iment in science is quite different to writing about an event in history. Subject teachers teach students how to read and write in their own subjects.

Your student’s learning in all subject areas will be supported by: • talking and listening • reading • writing. Parents/carers have a key role in supporting their students to further develop and practice liter-acy skills.

What is numeracy? Numeracy is the capacity to use

mathematics in everyday situations at home, at work and for participa-tion on community life. This involves applying mathematical knowledge such as when estimating, measuring and interpreting information pre-sented in text, tables and as graphs.

Each subject may draw upon spe-cific mathematical ideas, e.g. creat-ing a graph in geography, reading or developing a timeline in history, measuring an ingredient accurately in food technology.

There are some aspects of numeracy that support learning in all the subject areas. These include: • making calculations and work-ing out simple number problems • estimating and measuring • reading and creating graphs and tables • critically interpreting information presented as graph.
