Introduction National Anveshika Network of India (NANI) is conducting National Anveshika Experimental Skills Test (NAEST) at all the Anveshika centers to encourage the culture of doing experiments. NAEST is being organized at two levels, (1) School Level for Class 9 to Class 12 and (2) College Level for BSc and MSc. The test format consists of screening round, preliminary and finals. This report is for screening test.

For screening test, nominations are invited from schools/colleges for participation in NAEST. A limited number of nominations per institution are accepted. In special cases, individual nominations can also be accepted. Out of the total nominations received at each Anveshika, screening is done to select students for preliminary round, through a video quiz. A short experiment is shown in each video and questions are asked based on the experiments shown.

In Telangana, NAEST was organized in association with Vigyana Bharati, State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT), Forum for Physical Science Teachers (FPST), and other physics enthusiasts and volunteers. It was a voluntary effort supported by large number of volunteers. No financial assistance was taken from any organization (except NANI).

The attempt was made to reach all districts of Telangana. The test was conducted at multiple centres. Availability of committed volunteer (coordinator) was key factor for deciding test centre. Guideline for each centre was 100 students from minimum of 10 schools. More than 7000 students, mostly from government schools (ZPHS), participated in the screening round. These students were nominated by the schools. Nomination criteria was a maximum of 10 students per school (or maximum 5% of total strength in class 9th to 12th). In some districts, only 2 students per school were allowed in order to reach more number of schools. This way, more than 800 schools were reached.

The evaluation of screening test was carried out by respective centre coordinator. The selection criteria from each centre was a minimum of 1 student per centre and maximum of 1% of the students participated at that centre. Total 120 students were selected for preliminary test (next round).

The preliminary test was conducted at three centres namely (1) Hyderabad, (2) Warangal and (3) Nizamabad. Each centre accomodated 40 students. The allocation of these centres was based on geographical location of the selected students. The participation from degree college students was limited and they were accommodated at Hyderabad. From each centre, three students (first, second, and third) were selected based on their performance. The topper from each centre was recommended for semi-finals. One degree student was also recommended for semifinals. Thus, total

4 students (3 from schools, 1 from degree) were recommended for semifinal round to be conducted at Kanpur.
