Foreword

This state-of-the-art report has been written in an effort toillustrate commonly used engineering symbols andgraphic representations that are related to cathodicprotection used in corrosion control. Because there areno current uniform designations for cathodic protectionsymbols, this state-of-the-art report is intended to providea straightforward reference of commonly used symbolsfor engineers, designers, contractors, and other corrosioncontrol personnel who use cathodic protection. Thisreport is designed to assist in avoiding confusion amongdesign, construction, and other associated corrosionactivities.

This technical committee report was prepared by NACEInternational Task Group T-1E-14 on EngineeringSymbols Related to Cathodic Protection, a component ofUnit Committee T-1E on Cathodic Protection of OilfieldEquipment, with input from Unit Committee T-10A onCathodic Protection. It is issued by NACE Internationalunder the auspices of Group Committee T-1 on CorrosionControl in Petroleum Production.

Introduction

Task Group T-1E-14 was formed to identify engineeringsymbols related to cathodic protection that are commonlyused in industry and to disseminate this information foruse by those who have a need for these symbols. To aidin accomplishing this task, a survey was distributed in1994 to members of NACE Group Committees T-1 onCorrosion Control in Petroleum Production and T-10 onUnderground Corrosion Control. The survey askedrespondents to compile and return as many symbolsbeing used by corrosion control and drafting personnel as

possible. Ten companies responded to the survey. Thesymbols included in this report are a result of thesesubmissions, further investigations, and review by thetask group.

The commonly used engineering symbols related tocathodic protection are listed under 16 differentcategories. The following index lists the categories andthe pages on which they can be found.
