3. Research, Consultancy and Extension

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institutionThe institution as such has not a recognized research centre; however the faculty isinvolved in the research at individual level in various departments and in collaborationwith some universities and research centres. The teacher is deputed of and on to variousconferences seminars and symposia to various institutions in and outside the state toboost their teaching skills and make their teaching process more innovative. Theinstitution has a research committee to monitor and address the issues of research. Thecommittee is comprised of a convener and five members under the patronage of Head ofthe institution

Events organized by the Institution

1. Department of Functional English organised one day seminar on “Funny aspectsof English Language”. The seminar was attended by the faculty of English, urduand Arabic Departments. The students of Functional English and EnglishLiterature also participated in the deliberation. Prof. Aijaz Hussain, Principal ofthe College made a presentation and involved the participants in the drill onhomophones and homonyms.

2. Book Exhibition: The College organised two day book exhibition on 18th and19th August 2009 in the main Hall. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Lateef-u-Zamman Deva Deputy Commissioner Baramulla. On this occasion 26 book sellers from across the valley displayed their books on their stalls. Thefaculty members and students of various colleges and schools visited stalls andplaced orders for their respective institutes. The deputy Commissioner whileinaugurating book exhibition said, “By Purchasing a particular book and goingthrough the contents the mental horizon of a person gets broadened.”

3. Motivational Lecture: Career counselling cum placement cell of the collegeorganised a motivational lecture on “How to join Indian Army”. The aim of thelecture was to motivate and create awareness among students especially NCCcadets with „B� and „C� certificates about various courses which are being offeredby Indian Army. The Lecture was delivered by Col Amit of 46RR.

Subject Tours4. Department of Zoology organised subject tour for BSc 3rd Year students on 9th

July, 2009. The students pursuing Zoology as one of the subjects were deputed toSericulture Division, Mirgund to get firsthand knowledge about silkwormrearing and disease aspects. The experts and faculty members demonstrated indetail various aspects of sericulture. The students were also taken to MansbalLake (water body) and were given on the job information about variousecological parameters.

5. Department of Botany: On 28th July, 2009 students of BSc 1st year pursuingBotany as one of the subject were deputed to Gulmarg to explore High AltitudeFlora of the region. The accompanying faculty members demonstrated andapprised students about habitat, adaptation and pharmaceutical importance ofvarious high altitude herbal plants. Later the students interacted with the ISMDoctors and experts at various stalls of exhibition centre.

6. The Students of Biotechnology Department were deputed to Indian institute ofIntegrative Medicine and Allied Science (IIIM) Sanat Nagar Srinagar. Thestudents attended both theoretical and practical classes in the institute.

7. Students of Department of Physics were deputed to Baba Atomic Researchcentre , Gulmarg on 19th August, 2009 for getting first hand information aboutpractical aspect of the subject

Extension Lectures1. Between Democracy and Nation Gender and militarization in Kashmir An

extension lecture was organised by the debating society of the College on 13th

June, 2009 in collaboration with the Department of Media Studies of the College. Miss Seema Qazi, research fellow at JNU at Centre for Law and Governancedelivered the lecture based on her book, “Between democracy and NationGender and Militarization in Kashmir”. Miss Qazi who has done her PhD fromLondon School of economics, took pride in interacting with college students andcommented that Kashmir has lot of talent to explore in its younger generation. Miss Qazi also interacted with students of Mass communication and Multimedia Production department and addressed the queries raised by them especiallywhen asked about the scope of woman in today�s Media world. Miss seema QaziHighlighted the issues of Gender in the region of Kashmir, which according toher excessive Militarization has led to the closing of political spaces for womanof Kashmir. During the proceedings Prof. Aijaz Hussan Princuipal of the collegeemphasized that woman must generate individual strength to struggle in theirdaily lives.

2. Department of Botany as part of the academic improvement programmeorganised an extension lecture, “Floral Wealth of Kashmir” on 17th August 2009 for Science students. The Lecture was delivered by Dr. I. A. Nawchoo, AssociateProfessor Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, Srinagar. During theCourse of Lecture, Dr. Nawchoo deliberated on various aspects of flora ofKashmir which includes conservation strategy, propagation techniques andethno Botanical use. Dr. Nawchoo said, “Nature has bestowed Kashmir witharray of floral wealth. Every effort should be put to preserve and propagateherbs which constitute economy of the state”. The students intersected withguest faculty and posed various queries.

3. Mr. O. P. Sharma (IFS) conservator state Forest Institute Srinagar deliveredextension Lecture “Biodiversity of Kashmir with special reference to Gurez”.Mr. Sharma spoke at length on bio diversity of Kashmir zone. Sharma said“Nature has gifted Kashmir with large number of Medicinal and Aromatic herbswhich find tremendous application in pharmaceutical and perfumery industry” .

4. Dr. A. H Zargar, Director SKIMS and Ex-Officio Secretary to GovernmentDepartment of Health, Govt. Of J&K talked about the Health Scenario ofKashmir. In his power point presentation Dr. Zargar said, “Diabetes and Iodinedeficiency problems are very prevalent in J&K. Change in Life style, affluence, lead to obesity heart ailments, hypertension. Iodine deficiency causes retortedbrain development, goitre, cretinism which results in developmental delays and

other health problems. This should now be combated by the addition of smallamounts of Iodine to table salt in the form of sodium iodide, potassium iodideand or potassium iodate, the product commonly known as iodised salt.”

5. Prof. S. E. Belkha, Head Department of Philosphy, University of Pune delivered an extension lecture, “Role of Philosphy in Life” on 21st September,2009.

College Development Activities

As Sequel to its sustained efforts, the College Development Committee completed thejob of renovation and repairs of Library, Electronics Department and college Hostel. The work on provision for intercom to various units of the college administration wasalso started.

22nd August 2009 Awareness Lecture on swine Flu Pandemic: Dr. NisarAhmad Khan, Dr. M. S. Saraf, Medical Supdtt. DistrictHospital Baramulla highlighted the crucial issues andconcerns regarding the swine flu, emphasizing that there is noneed to panic, there is always a need for caution.

2nd September 2009 Awareness Camp on Swine Flu Pandemic: National ServiceScheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corp (NCC) units of theCollege organised “Awareness Lecture on Swine Flu” atSalamabad Uri on 22nd August, 2009. On this occasion, Dr. G. J. Zargar, Department of Health, Govt. Of J&K deliveredimpressive lecture on various aspects of swine flu includingpreventive measures to be undertaken to control theinfluenza. A. M. Chalkoo, NSS Programme officer whilespeaking on the occasion said, “The influenza has assumedpandemic proportion. By adopting basic preventive measure, the flu can easily be controlled. Mr. Chalkoo further said, “theforth coming winter period would further aggravate thesituation. One must be very vigilant”. The students anddenizens of Uri interacted with the Doctors and organisers ofthe Programme

6th October 2009 Cultural Exchange Programme: NSS Wing of the College incollaboration with Gandhi Memorial College, Srinagarorganised “Cultural Exchange Programme” in collegeauditorium on 6th October, 2009. The central objective of theprogramme was to promote innovation and creativity andprovide platform for the talented lot. Students from allcultural sectors participated in the programme

24th October 2009 National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme(NSS) units organised one day blood donation camp on 24th

7.1 Innovations introduced during this academic year which have created a positive impact on the functioning of the institution.

An Academic Calendar prepared before commencement of the classes is followed. Allthe academic activities including co-curricular activities, guest lectures, seminars, workshops, subject tours and excursions are conducted as per the academic calendar.

7.2 Best Practices of the institution

A well established career counselling cell to provide counselling to studentsregarding various competitive exams and career opportunities.

An admission committee in place to provide counselling to admission seekersregarding the courses, subject combinations available in the college.

Well developed IT infrastructure Hostel, sports and photocopying facilities available in the college for students To maintain punctuality of students, month wise attendance is compiled and

students falling shortage of attendance are warned well in time.
