EditorialOn second chances
So, here we are again. Did we learn anything from the first time?
We need more people. Contributors of course, and especiallypeople who do things which aren’t particularly orthographic —artists, photographers, musicians, dancers, people who makemovies. The next issue will include six minutes of streaming video. We need more of that, to take advantage of our digitalopportunities.
I think we ought to add a section of reviews — of books orperformances by fellow Emeriti, but also thoughtful responses tonew publications in all fields, movies, museum shows. As I write, the Phoenix Art Museum is showing pages from the firstcalligraphic Bible in 500 years, and I’d very much like to hearfrom the experts among us in art, religion, and other concernedfields what they think.
So this: if you’ve written a book or something of that sort, sendthis journal a copy to be reviewed. We’ll find a reviewer for it.
We also need artists, graphic designers, and web programmers whocan improve the looks of this journal and make it work better. Forthe first two issues I’ve done all the visual work myself. I don’tmind contributing my own drawings and photographs and designs, but I’m an amateur. I don’t have the expertise or time to do a betterjob. Anyone?
The first issue has gotten some attention. It took me a while to findout how to obtain web use reports and get the necessary authority, and we lost the data from the first three months, but since Dec 27th
I’ve been getting weekly reports. The web site is getting about 12readers daily, up from two at the beginning of the year. Some ofthis traffic is ‘legs trade’ as they say in the retail business —people off the street who are just looking. But when the Insight rana story about us on the 15th of January and re-ran it on the 18th,
there were nice spikes in usage the day after. So someone is payingattention. Here is the chart.
