Pastoral l i fe in St . Wil l iam, July – October 2017
Since July 1, when I arrived here as your new Pastor I want to share and review my pastoral activity. As everyone
knows our parish is engaged with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s pastoral program of Renew My Church. This program
is about to provide more efficient pastoral activity for the whole Archdiocese, taking into consideration new challeng-
es: shortage of priests, financial problems of many parishes, and the decline of Mass attendance. First of all, we notice
the shortage of the priests because there are no vocations to the priesthood in our Diocese and in a few years many
older priests (about 50) will be retired. Secondly, we are witnessing the waves of migration of the people from Chicago
to the suburbs and simultaneously many parishes have evolved their ethnic background, as a majority are being re-
placed by a Hispanic population. This is the case at our Parish. Thirdly, there are financial problems related with main-
taining Catholic schools, which produces debt to the parish every year more and more. Consequently, the parish
struggles with financial problems instead of being a center of pastoral work. The Archdiocesan program of Renew My
Church responds to these challenges and tries to help the parishes in two directions:
- Propose grouping of the smaller (2 or 3) parishes in order to work together now and in the future, eventually,
to be combined in one new parish upon a new name and administration
- Together with the representation of individual parishes and schools (3 to 4 persons) with the help of Archdio-
cese, make a new founding program in order to increase its financial (scholarship) and personal ability.
As was stated previously, St. William was put together in one group with St. Celestine and St. Cyprian from Elmwood
Park and Rive Grove. The Parish has chosen its own representatives (Fr. Ryszard Gron, the Pastor, Gregory Fidanza,
Linda Ricchio, Alicja Po!ywio), and the school as well (Br. Michael Segvich, the Principal, Maria Montes de Oca,
Andrea Alanis, school parents). We have had meetings (10 in general in the time of 4 months), working on parish level
in term to explain to the parishioners the whole process of Renew My Church and the involvement in these group
sessions. The goal is to propose the best pastoral resolution for the future of each parish. Our grouping session was
given two scenarios to review:
A. Combing into one canonical parish with three churches / worship sites with a new name and one pastor
(including possibly one associate pastor)
B. Combining St. Celestine and St. Cyprian parishes into one canonical parish, and St. William staying as is because
of its trilingual cultural and language diversity.
In both cases there are still challenges with the schools. The schools of St. Cyprian and St. William will be given time
to increase the number of students and thereby decreasing the debt which is the work of each parish and school. So
far, we are working on recruitment and advertising our school within and outside of our parish community. Our meet-
ings should finish within the month of December, and our suggestions will be presented to Cardinal Cupich in January
2018 with a decision made sometime within the next year.
Apart from the Renew My Church program, the parish continue its sacramental and pastoral mission in English and
Polish, serving to the parishioners and both schools: American (St. William) and Polish (St. Albert Chmielowski).
We continue the order of Masses during the weekdays and Sundays, adding only one more Spanish Mass on Sunday,
at 3:30 PM, starting November 5. We have hired a new director for Religious Education, Ms. Alicja Po!ywio, who in
cooperation with a few volunteer teachers leads the Catholic education classes. The children from this program attend
Mass every Sunday that classes are in session. The classes begin at 10:30 AM with Mass at noon in the Church.
3
St. William School children along with its new principal, Br. Michael Segvich, attend our school Mass every Wednesday, 8:15 AM. To enlighten the pastoral work we have invited guests from charismatic missionary movements like Fr. J. Bashobora from Uganda, on October 6, and Fr. J. Vaddakel from India, on October 29. We cultivate Italian, American, Polish, and Spanish traditions so that we unite our multicultural parish. The Polish Albertine Sisters have organized the “rummage sales” and sold the paczki, they prepared to raise funds in order to help the teens from our school to participate at the Youth American Catholic Gathering in Indianapolis at the end of this November. On this occasion of making my pastoral report, I want to thank to all the people involved in pastoral work: Fr. Jarek, the Albertine Sisters, staff and PPC members, principals of the Schools, all volunteers, teachers, ministers, ushers, all parish groups, and to the people of St. William. May God bless you for your love to Jesus Christ. Happy Thanksgiving, Thank you, Fr. Ryszard Gron !

Padre Ryszard Gron.!

THE MEANING OF ADVENT SEASON Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of
preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of
preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.
The focus of Advent is preparation for the coming of the Lord -- both in commemoration of His Nativity and His
coming again at the end of time. Though most Protestants -- and far too many Catholics -- see this time of year as a
part of the "Christmas Season," it isn't; the Christmas season does not begin until the first Mass at Christmas Eve, and
goes on in the spiritual sense until February 2 – the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
Traditionally, all great feasts have been preceded by a time of fasting, which makes the feast itself more joyful. Sadly,
Advent today has supplanted by "the Christmas shopping season," so that by Christmas Day, many people no longer
enjoy the feast.
Holding off on putting up the Christmas tree and other decorations is another way to remind ourselves that the feast
is not here yet. Traditionally, such decorations were put up on Christmas Eve, but they would not be taken down until
after Epiphany, in order to celebrate the Christmas season to its fullest.
In its symbolism, the Church continues to stress the penitential and preparatory nature of Advent. As during Lent,
priests wear purple vestments, and the Gloria ("Glory to God") is omitted during Mass. The only exception is on the
Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday when priests can wear rose-colored vestments.
Perhaps the best-known of all Advent symbols is the Advent wreath. Consisting of four candles (three purple and one
pink) arranged in a circle with evergreen boughs. The Advent wreath corresponds to the four Sundays of Advent. The
purple candles represent the penitential nature of the season, while the pink candle calls to mind the respite of
Gaudete Sunday. The light represents Christ, who entered this world to scatter the darkness of evil and show us the
way of righteousness. The progression of lighting candles shows our increasing readiness to meet our Lord.
Each family ought to have an Advent wreathe, light it at dinner time, and say the special prayers. This tradition will
help each family keep its focus on the true meaning of Christmas. In all, during Advent we strive to fulfill the opening
prayer for the Mass of the First Sunday of Advent: “Father in Heaven, ... increase our longing for Christ our Savior
and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of His coming may find us rejoicing in His presence and
welcoming the light of His truth”.

“HOT TOPICS”
St. Celestine, St. Cyprian and St. William Parishes join together for a fourth year to host a series of lectures to discuss “Hot Topics” in today’s challenging society. Please mark your calendars. We hope you can join us for what we feel will be very attention-grabbing discussion!
Thursday, December 7, 2017 @ 7:00 PM Topic: “God Squad” Presented by: Fr. Dominic Clemente Hosting Parish: St. William, 2600 North Sayre Avenue, Chicago, IL About the Topic: Millennials and Church Mass Attendance have been hot button topics in the Church the last five years. How do we get millennials to Mass? How do we keep the millennials we have? What in God’s name is a millennial?! These are all important questions and they will be covered by Fr. Dom who was featured in a TIME magazine article on millennial priests titled: The God Squad. In our time together Fr. Dom will explain who millennials are, who millennials are not, the “new” approach of millennial priests, and what parishes should be doing.
About The Speaker: Fr. Dominic Clemente is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and was ordained in May 2016. Fr. Dom grew up on Chicago’s Northwest side (go Cubs!) where he attended his parish grade school and St. Patrick High School (go Shamrocks!). Before entering the seminary, Fr. Dom was seeking a career in the performing arts until God called him to a bigger stage and a wider audience. When Fr. Dom isn’t at his parish (St. Edward) you can find him eating a Chicago Hot Dog (most likely at Jimmy’s or Gene & Judes), traveling the world, or sleeping on his easy chair. Follow Fr. Dom on Instagram @FatherDominicClemente, Twitter @FrDomClemente, and visit his website www.FrDominic.com.
A small reception will follow discussion!
