Reformation 500 and Beyond
In some respects it is hard to believe that this October 31 will be the 500
th Anniversary of the
Reformation. This has been a year rich in Reformation remembrance. From our synod assembly to congregational activities to public events there has been much celebrating of the 500th. Personally I have read a couple of Luther biographies, watched the PBS movie and read some of Luther’s writings.
I think there is much to be learned from our past. But we often look back and have a rather pristine view of the events of the reformation. As I read Scott Hendrix’ Martin Luther: Visionary Reformer, I realized again how Luther struggled with God, explored questions, studied the Scriptures, prayed fervently, exercised his mind and acted courageously not knowing how things would turn out or where things would lead. There was much uncertainty, enormous ambiguity, huge issues at stake, and lots of political and ecclesiastical intrigue. And Luther himself was a

A Message from the Bishop continued
mixed bag, a reformer with great intellect and man of faith yet a gigantic personality with words and actions that were over the top even for his own day. Yet God in God’s mercy and by the power and guidance of the Spirit worked good for the Church through those events.
I hope that we can imitate the best of Luther today and that of the other reformers as well – men and women who lived in those days and struggled with the issues of faith and life. They were open to the Holy Spirit moving among them, the Spirit, Luther would say, who called them through Gospel of Jesus Christ. They took risks and made decisions and reshaped the life of church and state.
Bishop Craig Satterlee reminded us at our recent theological conference that for Luther the Word of God was more than a book to be studied. It is also a presence and a grace to be encountered. He encouraged us pastors, deacons, and lay leaders to dwell in the Word richly, so that God might continue to mold, shape and re-form our life together today.
In three years we can celebrate another 500th,
that of Martin Luther’s treatise on the Freedom of the Christian. In many respects this writing sums up the heart of the reformation and has a most direct connection to our lives today. Luther writes how we are perfectly free in Christ, subject to no one while at the same time a dutiful servant, called to love and serve one’s neighbor.
Dr. Alexia Salvatierra, at our theological conference, led us in profound ways to think about our life in Christ and loving our neighbors in need. More than anyone else the Church is called to care for people who are different from them she rightly noted. In this day when there is so much anxiety and fear, Dr. Salvatierra led us to see that in “the other” there is both the possibility of threat and blessing. When the world around us is paralyzed by the polarization, we in the Church are free to build bridges across the many differences that divide.
So my hope and prayer is that Reformation 500 continues, not in just in an academic sort of way or in a way that celebrates the past without
reflecting upon the present and reshaping our lives for the future. I hope the Reformation continues, the kind that exercises all the faculties God has given us. I hope and pray we will act and live and shape our lives by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and be renewed in our life and witness in the world today.
Outreach News
OUTREACH TEAM meets first Sunday of the
month after worship service. Anyone interested is
welcome.
Mike Hetzner, Outreach Team coordinator
Team is meeting on approximately the first Sunday every 3 months, most recently September 17, 2017. We discuss current projects and opportunities for outreach to our
members and to the wider community.
Recent projects:
Rummage Sale, chaired by Rachel Barrett, September 16, was again successful in bringing the community into our doors. $850 was raised, including $100 donation to food pantry. Trivent matching funds yielded an
additional $250.
Bake Sales at Chilton Farmers Market, chaired by Pat Jensen, July 26, August 25, and September 17 drew about 20 helpers and bakers from Gloria Dei and
raised a total of $707.57.
Packer Bash October 1 at Altona: GD members, chaired by Coleen Allee, donated $375 and Trivent Action Team grant of $250 donated $625 to fill a freezer full of beef for auction to
benefit local families.
Members not attending worship report will be presented to Council for action. We had a healthy discussion about this at the congregation
meeting in September.
Next meeting December 3. Please send me your
ideas and projects any time.
Mike Hetzner

Cookies for College Kids
It’s that time again…time to start planning the fall
shipment of Cookies for College Kids. First
of all, I NEED NAMES and
ADDRESSES of congregation
college kids. I have my list from
the spring semester, and I've
deleted those that I know are
not in college this semester. I will have my list on the
table in the Narthex. Please check names and addresses to make
sure they are up-to-date and add any names and addresses that
you do not see on there. Next, if you are willing to bake or
contribute other treats like individually wrapped candy, there is a
sign-up sheet in the narthex for that too. For anyone who would
like to help, we will be packing the boxes on Sunday,
November 12th at 10:15am. If you’re not a baker, you can still
help with a monetary donation that would defray the cost of
shipping the packages (about $8.50 each). If you have any other
questions, just ask!

Pictures and Info for Web Site
We are revamping the Gloria Dei web site
(www.gloriadeilc.com) and adding a lot more
content and pictures. Check out the progress
so far. The goal is display all that Gloria Dei is
and does. It is great way to show prospective
members what Gloria Dei is all about. This in-
cludes the activities that we do such as dinner
theater, empty bowls, rummage sale, highway
clean up, God’s Work Our Hands, etc.) There
will also be more information added regarding
our growing in faith activities such as Sunday
School, confirmation class, Tuesday morning Bi-
ble study, adult education hour, youth group,
etc. Please send me any info or pictures that
you feel would make a great addition. David
Hoban ([email protected])
Piggly Wiggly Receipts
Your receipts from Piggly Wiggly
from both Kiel and New Holstein
can be placed in the basket in the
narthex. Both stores allow us to
turn in receipts to get the same non
-profit donation as purchasing
SCRIP gift cards. So receipts from
purchases using gift cards are not
eligible. Alternatively, there is a
collection box for Gloria Dei at the
New Holstein store located at the
service counter.

“Now there are different kinds of gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of services in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. Gifts are given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7
God has given each person many gifts, which
make each of us unique in the Lord’s eyes. Through the sacrament of baptism, God calls us to ministry. We carry forth God’s plan for us by using the gifts God so generously bestows. All of these gifts make us who we are: individual and gifted. When we come forward together as individuals, each of us brings our own gifts as an offering. Each is vital to God’s plan. Blended together we create a ministry on earth. If we do not come forward we fall short of the celebration to which they were to be a part. The same can be true of God’s church. When we let our gifts go undiscovered or unshared, we risk letting our part of God’s plan fall.
Our styles are an exciting and interesting part of our identity – a combination of the distinctive ways we express ourselves. Here our gifts of style do not refer to a sense of fashion or flair. Rather, styles are our unique ways of learning about and interacting with the world. Others are often more aware of our styles than we are. Because our styles have been with us so long, we often overlook them or take them for
granted. People with similar talents or common life experiences may have very different styles. What best describes you?
Achievement—Key motivators are goals and outcomes Affiliation—Key motivation is relationships Power and Influence—Key motivation is change God calls us to bring our creativity and healing to
the world in order that all of creation may be as the Creator intended. Listed below are several issues of concern in our world. Each provides arenas in which one’s gifts might apply. Some may especially call out for your unique gifts. They may have a special pull on our heart. If you feel a deep compassion for people in some of these life circumstances or if you are passionate about the need for change in one of these arenas, you may be called to minister there with your gifts.
Desire provides the life energy that fuels both our passions and our dreams. Many of us use the terms desires, passions and dreams nearly interchangeably. Desires tend to be lived out in both passions and dreams. Passions and dreams are often difficult to distinguish from each other. Dreams imply more of a future orientation. Passions often reflect previous experiences in which we once found great meaning, satisfaction, or joy.

Capitol Campaign Update
October 2017
A Captial Campaign was kicked off in July to
raise $10,000 by the end of 2017.
Congratulations! As of early October our total
was just over $12,000! This includes $5,000
from Dinner Theater funds. Thank you to
everyone who has donated and continues to
donate. The Capital Campaign will remain
open. Can we reach $15,000!? Again, the
Capital Campaign is raising funds beyond your normal giving. The money is going towards
paying down the mortgage. There will be a
renewed campaign for next year 2018.
Respectfully,
David Hoban

Gloria Dei Church Council Meeting Minutes
October 10, 2017 Members Present: Joe Janicek-President, Charlotte Deehr- Secretary, Rachel Barrett, Coleen Allee, Gary Meyer, Sue Erickson
Absent: Mary Jo Muellenbach, Annette Pleshek
Visitors: David Kohls, Craig Heller
Call to Order: President Joe Janicek called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m.
Opening Prayer: Joe
Strategic Planning Committee Presentation: Craig and Jerry The SPC has been working on setting up goals, working with the synod and in conjunction with Mission Investment. They have come up with a plan with five goals:
Evaluate and confirm our mission statement Improve communication between members and church leaders through implementation of regularly scheduled
“Town Hall” meetings Develop the leadership structure of Gloria Dei Develop and implement a plan for annual leadership training Establish leadership team and/or committee to ensure Gloria Dei moves forward toward becoming a financially
sustainable church Discussion was held regarding each of these goals, whether they required short term or long term actions, and the deadlines for the completion of each of the actions toward the goals.
Approval of Agenda: Jerry motioned to approve agenda, Charlotte seconded. Motion carried.
Approval of Minutes (September 12, 2017): Jerry motioned to approve minutes, Rachel seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report:
Monthly expenses look low due to where the due dates for bills fell this month… some were paid late August, and some were not due until early October. The checkbook balance looks high due to the Capital Campaign fund, as well as the loss of paying a pastor’s salary and insurance. We are current on all bills. This information will be forwarded to Mission Investment per their requirements.
Coleen motioned to approve treasurers report, Jerry seconded. Motion carried.
Committee Reports: Mutual Ministry (Annette): No report Worship and Music (Rachel & Dave): Reformation Sunday is October 29, with Pastor Clarence Harms leading the
service. A food drive will be held in November, with donations being divided between Kiel, New Holstein, and Chilton. The lavaliere microphone is working, and was used during the youth-driven service. Worship and Music has a firm schedule of service leaders through mid-November, and a tentative schedule through the end of December.

Education (Charlotte): Youth driven service went well, with good youth participation. Sunday School attendance is down in comparison to past years. Charlotte will talk to Ann regarding Confirmation.
Strategic Planning (Jerry): Discussed at beginning of meeting Outreach (Gary): No report Buildings and Grounds (Sue): Water sample taken, still pending results. Stewardship (Jerry): Al Fett is working on the budget that needs to be submitted to Mission Investment by
November 30, and is working with Mary Jo Muellenbach to coordinate numbers. Decided that each committee should have a minimum of three members. New pledge cards have been printed and distributed (included in the quarterly statements). How should the pledge cards be distributed to those who did not receive statements due to not giving this year? Extra pledge cards will be put on the table in the narthex.
Council members should come to next month’s meeting with the list of people on each of their committees.
Old Business:
Church Computer-- Charlotte: Andrew found a HP Pavilion hard drive for $499 which will work with our current monitor. This will be paid for with the
profits from the rummage sale. Charlotte will talk to Mary Jo regarding how best to make this purchase. Jerry motioned to approve the purchase of the computer. Coleen seconded. Motion carried.
Supply Pastor Schedule/Lay ministry—Joe: How do we pay for a supply pastor? There is no set procedure for payment (service cost plus mileage). A check should
be requested from Mary Jo prior to the pastor arriving, so that they can be paid on the day they provide the service. Rachel will contact the pastor to figure out the mileage ahead of time, to be added to the service cost.
We have a list of 10 possible supply pastors, but we have been consistently using two: Pastor Jensen and Pastor Harms.
New Business:
Secretarial Position-- Joe: Our church secretary is needed at church more consistently than is happening now, particularly during the evening when
the church is being used, in order to better meet the needs of the congregation. Joe will contact Stephanie regarding the increased need to work her hours in the church building.
Jerry made a motion to increase the number of hours worked at church to 15 hours a week. Gary seconded. Motion carried.
Church Picnic—Joe: October 28, 10am-2pm, held at the New Holstein Community Center. Council will provide the “main meat” dish…
Rachel will talk to Broderick about pulled pork. Bring your own beverages. Charlotte will create a sign-up sheet for dishes to pass. This will be posted in the narthex, and Joe will post this on the church Facebook page.
