By the Middle Ages the most popular description of the war was based on a Latin text describing itself as a trans- lation of an eyewitness account given by Dictys Cretensis (Dictys of Crete). Ac- cording to the prologue, Dictys fought against the Trojans and later recorded the war (in the Phoenician alphabet) on sheets of bark that were placed in his tomb upon his death. A thousand years later in the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, the prologue continues, an earth- quake opened the tomb and the sheets were discovered and transliterated into Greek and subsequently translated into Latin. Modern scholars were understandably a little dubious. For many years, they dis- puted whether the Latin text really repre- sented an ancient text with a Greek, let alone Phoenician, original. Many scholars were content to assign it a medieval date. The matter was decided in the Egyp- tian desert. In the early part of the last century, excavators working on behalf of UC Berkeley unearthed a sheet of papyrus from a Roman house at Tebtunis. The find confirmed the an- tiquity of the Greek Dictys account. It provided a date no later than 250 CE for the sheet of papyrus (P.Tebt. II 268), indicating a date probably no later than 200 CE for its original composition, and certainly not excluding the Neronian date given by the prologue. The Dictys account is just one of a great many papyrus finds that have added to the body of ancient literature that informs not only classical studies, but also part of the literary heritage of the West. Found in context and read along with the documentary texts for which the Tebtunis collection is fa- mous, such literary texts can be used to write social history— to (re)unite liter- ary texts with their usually obscure an- cient audience. The Center for the Tebtunis Papyri (CTP) was formed in 2000 to create scholarly focus and support for the study and decipherment of the largest collection of papyri fragments in the Americas. Dr. Todd Hickey, the collection’s curator and papyrologist, joined CTP the following year and has set about to realize its goals. CTP’s first priority is to preserve the papyri for future generations of students and scholars. This year the Center was able to double the number of papyri in its online digital catalogue (for a total of 2,590 records), and approximately a third of the collection’s 30,000 loose fragments were inventoried and placed in acid-free sheets. This past summer, Bancroft and CTP arranged for the Library’s conserva- tor, Lorna Kirwan, to spend four weeks studying with premier papyrus conserva- tor Andrea Donau at the Vienna Papyrussammlung, and in the early fall, the Library purchased six custom cabinets that will safely house the papyri, while at the same time rendering them more ac- cessible for study.     Reading Papyri, Writing History

    A Bancroft Library for the 21st Century

    The penny has dropped. Moreprecisely, Proposition 47, a $13.05 bil-lion bond for public education facilities,was approved by California voters in No-vember, 2002. The bond provides UC Ber-keley with funds for seismic strengthening,including $17 million for work on the DoeLibrary Annex, home to your favorite spe-cial collections repository, The Bancroft Li-brary.

    In anticipation of this decision, Bancroftand campus staff have been planning forthe removal of The Bancroft Library, eachand every staff member, book, manuscript,photograph, map, computer terminal,chair, coffeepot, and wastebasket, to tempo-rary locations for over a year. The limita-tions on “surge” space will require thatBancroft transfer much of its on-campuscollection to the Northern Regional LibraryFacility in Richmond. Current plans call forthe staff and limited collections to relocatefor about two years to “surge space” oncampus starting in Summer 2005. Forthose of you familiar with the campus, thesurge space in question is a set of pre-fabmetal buildings just west of the HearstGymnasium. Designed by Harrison Fraker,Dean of the College of Environmental De-sign, these buildings served originally as thehome of CED while Wurster Hall was un-dergoing seismic renovation.

    In Bancroftiana n. 120 (Spring 2002) Ireported on the initial architectural studieswe commissioned from Mark CavagneroAssociates and in n. 121 (Fall 2002) Isketched out a vision of collaboration be-tween Bancroft and other departments andresearch projects at Berkeley, a new modelfor special collections libraries in the 21stcentury. The library has long been describedas the laboratory for humanists and social

    scientists, the equivalent of the researchlaboratories in the sciences. A major differ-ence, however, is that the library provides aspace and an opportunity for individual re-search, while in scientific laboratories teamsof faculty, staff, graduate students, and un-dergraduates work together on specific re-search problems, by definition advancingthe state of the art. One of the crucial re-sults of that kind of collaboration is thementoring and acculturation of studentsinto the ethos and methodology of scien-tific research. A Bancroft-based“collaboratory” could offer that same kindof experience in the humanities and quali-tative social sciences. A sine qua non forthat vision, however, is a building designedto make it possible.

    Unfortunately, the Proposition 47funds, while serving the vital needs of pro-tecting life and materials from destructionduring an earthquake, offer no support toexpand or otherwise improve the building.Bancroft has therefore set out to raise pri-vate funds to provide not only collaborativework space, but also critically-needed im-provements: the installation of climate con-trol systems, modern security systems, andimproved storage space. This is an obliga-tory opportunity to secure the safety ofBancroft and its collections, enhance ourability to serve our patrons better, and posi-tion ourselves for future improvements inthe years to come.

    Given the state of the economy and theSpring 2004 date for making final deci-sions on the scope of the project, we arenow designing improvements for which wecan raise support by next spring. Our strat-egy is to rank those improvements in termsof cost as well as in terms of their impacton Bancroft’s programs; in short, what’s thebiggest bang for the buck?

    Everyone agrees that the highest prior-ity should be to protect the collections byrenewing the building’s fifty-year-old infra-structure (mechanical systems, wiring,plumbing) and adding all-important cli-mate control and networking capabilities.

    The most insidious threat to our collectionsare changes in temperature and humidity;and no library can function these days with-out a robust computer networking system.To serve our patrons and the public moreeffectively, we need a larger and more func-tional reading room, expanded exhibitionspace, and more seminar and study roomsdevoted to the sorts of collaborative researchsketched above. All this will require addingabout 20,000 square feet to the space we al-ready have. Mark Cavagnero Associateshave presented us with the option of a roof-top addition, subject to campus design re-view, and various reconfigurations of exist-ing space. We have just started to analyze indetail the pros and cons of each option.Once we have that analysis in hand, we willbe able to put these options in priority orderwith price tags attached. This strategy willallow us to scale the size of the project to thefunding available in a structured way. Itwon’t be all or nothing.

    The Library Advisory Board, the sup-port group for the Library as a whole, andthe Council of the Friends of The BancroftLibrary are now establishing a Bancroft Re-newal Committee of volunteers, faculty, andstaff. Over the next several months we willjointly recruit members to serve on theCommittee, set up a process to identify pro-spective major donors, and come up with alist of “naming opportunities” in the reno-vated building. For example, our current ex-hibition gallery is simply called “TheBancroft Gallery.” A suitable donationwould result in, for example, “The John andJane Doe Exhibition Gallery.” There will bea great many such opportunities.

    Because of the short time frame thecoming Bancroft Renewal Campaign mustbe intense and focused. Of necessity theFriends will play an important role in thiseffort. You will be hearing more from us inthe near future.

    The children’s books published in19th-century California open a win-dow onto the cultural history of Califor-nia youth. And The Bancroft Library,with between 100 and 200 such titles, isan ideal place from which to view thisgenerally unfamiliar aspect of our statecultural heritage.

    Tablas Para los Niños que Empiezan aContar, (Agustin Zamorano: Monterey,1836) was the first children’s book pub-lished in Alta California. It presentedthe math curriculum for the earliestsecular schools in the colony and taughtmultiplication tables, monetary conver-sions in bases 8, 12 and 34, and timeconcepts among other lessons. Thissmall, one signature book signaled thebeginning of culturally distinct booksfor California youth. Zamorano andRomero, the schoolmaster, could havereprinted a Mexican or Spanish text. In-stead, they produced an original mathbook designed for particular needs ofyoung, male gentes de razon.

    The international flood of immi-grants to the Gold Rush left amulticultural impression on the localchildren’s literature.

    California Children’s Books at The Bancroft Library

    Uncle John’s Stories for Good CaliforniaChildren, (Hutchins and Rosenfeld: SanFrancisco, circa 1860) spun original talesset in Europe, New England, California,Java, China, and on the Pacific Ocean.By the 1860s, publishers here began issu-ing literature that addressed the experi-ences of local youth.

    Anton Roman was the most prolificmid-century publisher for young Califor-nians. From his main office in San Fran-cisco and outpost in New York, he issuedthe Inglenook Series and Golden GateSeries, the latter with an engraved frontis-piece based on a Carlton Watkins photo-graph looking toward the Golden Gate.Roman employed outstanding artists andengravers. F.O.C. Darley signed the illus-tration for the fanciful biography of Em-peror Norton in Fairy Tales From the GoldLands, that appeared in the first of twovolumes dated 1868 and 1872. Romanintroduced young readers to literaturethat reflected the land, personalities, andexperiences of California.

    William Elliot Griffis’s primers, spell-ers, and readers were the first Westernschoolbooks in post-shogun Japan. Theyintroduced Japanese students to Ameri-can language and culture. The BancroftLibrary copies, published in 1872 and

    1873 by A.L. Bancroft in San Francisco,and others with Stone & Chipman inYokahama, Japan, belonged to Griffis,and bear his notes for revisions. Compar-ing Lesson XXIX in two editions of TheNew Japan Pictorial Primer reveals someof the many changes. The first editionportrays a man sitting at a dining table, awaiter standing beside him. The readinglesson states, “This man keeps his hat onhis head while he eats.” In the secondedition, there is no hat in sight and thewaiter becomes African American.

    Ho! For Elf-Land!, written and illus-trated by the popular actress AliceKingsbury (A.L. Bancroft: San Francisco,1877), is fanciful, sensual, and feminist.One story describes a girl riding a swingthat goes so high, it catches on the hornof the moon. She meets the little manwho lives there. He gives her a drink of“fermented moonbeam” and then theydance. Following the stories for children,Kingsbury addressed several essays to thepresumably adult, female reader. The fi-nal one titled “Woman, Past, Present andFuture” begins “I stand up in defense ofmy sex ...” and rails against injustices towomen. One might imagine A.L.Bancroft’s reaction based on the fact thatthe essay is expunged from the second

    California History in her DNA

    Helen Kennedy Cahill, betterknown as Peggy Cahill, is a friend ofThe Bancroft Library with California his-tory in her DNA. A 1938 graduate of UCBerkeley with a major in English and mi-nors in History and French, Peggy Cahillhas been active in preserving her family’shistory as well as the history of Stockton,which her great grandfather, Charles M.Weber, founded. She follows in a long lineof California history makers and preserva-tionists.

    She also comes from a long line of Calgraduates. When her mother went to col-lege it was the custom for the seniors towear their caps and gowns every Friday andon graduation. The gown was kept andPeggy wore her mother’s gown when shegraduated from Berkeley on the 25th anni-versary of her mother’s graduation. Peggystill has the mortar board.

    Her great-grandfather, Karl David We-ber, left Bavaria at the age of 22, on Octo-ber 6, 1836. After his arrival in New Or-leans, he headed to Texas where he joinedSam Houston’s forces. Returning to NewOrleans, he intended to go north to visitrelatives in Illinois, but in St. Louis hejoined the emigrant group that opened theCalifornia Trail, the Bidwell-BartlesonParty. The original group was composed of69 men and one woman of whom 31 menand the one woman and her baby girl werethe first company of American immigrantsto enter California over land. They had toabandon their wagons in the Nevada desertand continued on with their cattle. Eventu-ally they were forced to eat their oxen andthen their mules. When they arrived in SanJoaquin Valley after a six month journey,the group had very few possessions. Theyfinally came to rest at John Marsh’s ranchoat the base of Mt. Diablo on November 4,1841. Shortly after his arrival, Karl calledhimself Charles.

    From John Marsh’s Rancho, Weberwent to New Helvetia where John Sutterpromised General Mariano Vallejo that he

    would assume legal responsibility for“Carlos Maria Weber.” This was the firsttime that Maria was added to Weber’sSpanish-adjusted name. Weber became asupervisor for Sutter, studying the land andits growing capacity. From Sutter, helearned about building and managing andhow to negotiate with native peoples.

    Leaving Sacramento, Weber went intobusiness in San Jose at the age of 28, build-ing the first water-powered flour mill inCalifornia, the first shoe factory, and a largehide and tallow business. In February,1844, the governor awarded Weber and hispartner a land grant in the San Joaquin Val-ley near a place called “French Camp” forthe French fur trappers who wintered there.Weber became a naturalized Mexican citi-zen. That was the founding of Stockton.Commodore Stockton had promised We-ber a schooner for the Stockton-San Fran-cisco trade after the Bear Flag Revolt of1846 and the U.S.-Mexico War (1846-48).The schooner never materialized, but thecity was named on the Commodore’spromise. During that turbulent period,Weber was first considered a Californianand then an American. He was offered theposition of captaincy by Mexican GeneralJosé Castro, which he declined, and he lateraccepted the position of Captain in theCavalry of the United States.

    Weber met Helen Murphy at Sutter’sFort while detained by Sutter during thewar period. Helen was a member of theMurphy-Stephens-Townsend Party, thefirst overland party to bring wagons intoCalifornia in 1844. In 1850 Helen andCharles married and moved to the newhome the groom had built on what is stillWeber Point in Stockton. Throughout therest of his life, Weber built bridges andflood control, donated land for churches,schools, and parks, and gave and sold landto settlers. Stockton grew into a successfulcommunity. The Weber children wereCharles II, Julia Helen, and ThomasJefferson. Charles II was the father of

    Helen May Weber who married GeraldDriscoll Kennedy. Their children wereKatherine, Moira, Geraldine, and Helen(Peggy) Kennedy, our current friend ofBancroft.

    Aunt Julia, Captain Weber’s daughter,never married. An unusual woman for hertime, she was an intellectual, a constantreader, deeply interested in women’s rights.She insisted that her brother, Charles, whowas thinking it unnecessary, send hisdaughter, Helen May Weber, to the Univer-sity of California at Berkeley. In 1913,Helen and two friends were the first womengraduates in agriculture at Berkeley. Helenintended to carry on the family ranchingtradition in Stockton. She married a Calgraduate, Gerald Kennedy, who had a life-time interest in banking and agriculture.Throughout her life, Helen Kennedy caredfor and preserved the Weber family papers,furniture, and memorabilia which had beenleft to her by Aunt Julia.

    Although Captain Weber never joinedthe California legislature, preferring to workbehind the scenes, he had a great deal to dowith bringing California into the Union,according to letters in the State Library.Peggy’s grandfather, Charles Weber II,served in the State Assembly for one or twoterms, and Charles Weber III, Peggy’s uncle,was in the State Assembly for sixteen years.Through the generations, from Aunt Julia,to Helen Kennedy, to Peggy Cahill, an in-terest in history led each to preserve theearly stories and artifacts of California.“Aunt Julia was terribly proud of her fatherand what he had done. She knew what apart he had played in California historywith John Marsh and early leaders, and hewas so in favor of California coming intothe Union...I’m very glad Aunt Julia didpreserve family things...I just wish now thatI had asked Mother more.”

    Peggy was born in Stockton in 1916.She was named Helen, after her motherand her great- grandmother. Because havingso many Helens was confusing, the familybegan calling her Peggy. Out of school twoyears between fourth and sixth grades be-cause of tuberculosis, Peggy spent time athome with a tutor, most of it reading on agreat big porch off her bedroom.

    As a student at Berkeley, she worked onthe Daily Cal her first two years. JamesKennedy Moffitt, president of CrockerBank, who served as regent for many years,was a first cousin of her father. (His brotherwas Dr. Herbert Moffitt after whomMoffitt Hospital at UCSF was named.)James Moffitt, left the first large bequest toThe Bancroft Library of $100,000. He wasalso a great book collector.

    Peggy married John Cahill in 1942prior to his naval service in World War II.He had graduated in civil engineering fromStanford University and studied at UCBerkeley where his father had graduated incivil engineering.

    They moved to Marin County inApril 1946. Peggy did volunteerwork for the Art and Garden Center,the Sunny Hills Junior Auxiliary, andCatholic Social Service Auxiliary. Shewas also a member of the JuniorLeague of San Francisco. “My volun-teer work was mostly writing and I’ddo the history of these various orga-nizations, the research and all. Ittook time but I enjoyed doing it.”She was a member of the CaliforniaCommittee on Fulbright Scholar-ships for three or four years, havingbeen appointed by Governor Reaganin 1967. She was the first woman onthe Board of Trustees of the BerkeleyGraduate Theological Union, andfollowed in her mother’s foot steps whenshe became a member of the Council ofFriends of The Bancroft Library.

    Peggy began attending the CaliforniaHistorical Society monthly luncheons andmet Dr. George Hammond, Director ofthe Bancroft, who was sitting at her tablefor one of the lectures. When Hammondheard that her great grandfather wasCharles Weber he asked to be introduced toher mother, Mrs. Gerald Kennedy.

    With the introduction, Peggy’s motherbecame interested in historical lectures andwent to all that were available. She servedon the Friends of The Bancroft Librarycouncil for eight years. In addition to herpapers, Helen Kennedy had built a fine col-lection of Californiana and also had a re-

    markable collection of early maps whichwere donated along with a number of rareearly horticulture books. At Bancroft, shealso met the notable research scholar andstaff member, Dale Morgan, who was par-ticularly interested in Helen’s early maps ofCalifornia and the West. She then decidedto donate the Weber papers and maps toThe Bancroft Library. In 1966, George P.Hammond and Dale Morgan publishedCaptain Charles M. Weber, Pioneer of theSan Joaquin and Founder of Stockton. Thebook was a gift to Bancroft from HelenKennedy and all 700 copies quickly soldout.

    Helen Kennedy was also interested infine printing, The Grabhorn Press, TheBook Club of California, and she had along friendship with Lawton Kennedy, thedistinguished printer. All four of herdaughters shared these passions in oneform or another. Peggy and her sisterMoira Holden shared an interest in historyand worked with their mother on the dis-tribution of the Weber papers. Kate andher husband Harold Cookson participatedin her interest in the Southwest and in fineprinting. Geraldine Cole and her husband,Jerry Cole, are collectors, she of ThomasBewick, an English wood engraver and he,in turn-of-the-century Monterey Bay areaartists. Jerry also served on the Council ofFriends of The Bancroft Library. Both have

    been active in the local book community,the Roxburghe Club, The Book Club ofCalifornia, and the Gleason Library of theUniversity of San Francisco. They havetraveled with fellow members of theGrolier Club and the International Asso-ciation of Bibliophiles.

    Peggy was asked to speak in San Fran-cisco in 1961 for the Pioneer Society andthe National Council of Catholic Women,then at the Stockton Haggin Museum in1974. Her pamphlet, “Captain Weber andHis Place in Early California History” forThe Pacific Historian in 1976 was an exten-sion of the 1974 lecture.

    The valuable family papers allwent to The Bancroft Library. Peggyand her sisters presented one of therarest just before Bancroft DirectorJames D. Hart died. The document isthe only known copy of Mason’s Lawsin Spanish and English. GovernorMason was sent out to rule Californiawhen it became independent ofMexico, before statehood. “Our copyis the only one with the laws he drewup both in Spanish and English. TheHuntington Library has one in En-glish and the State Library has one inEnglish,” explains Peggy Cahill.

    Peggy finds it fascinating to knowhow other generations and other civi-lizations have lived and made theirmark. The 1846 and 1848 letters of

    Charles’ brother, Adolph Weber, home toGermany telling about life in California inthe early days are particularly amazing toPeggy. She is fascinated by readingFremont’s accounts of lupine coming up tohis boots, of the Great Plains, and of fieldsof flowers, grasses, and valley oaks.     The family of Arthur Rodgers, a regentof the University from 1883 until hisdeath in 1902, has given The Bancroft Li-brary a fine small collection of materialsthat reflect life in the early years of the stateof California and the speed with which anindustrious person could become estab-lished here. Seventeen nineteenth-centuryletters, two certificates from the CaliforniaSuperintendent of Public Instruction, andan 1895 San Francisco Chronicle weddingannouncement comprise the collection andmake us acquainted with one of our moreinteresting founding fathers. The wordingof the letters and the punctuation of thetime give a vivid sense of how quickly styleand usage change.

    Letters Arthur wrote and received frommembers of his family during 1865 refer torelatives left behind in the South and dis-cuss the sadness of the Civil War. To his sis-ter Amanda he wrote, “I love my relativesdearly, but how am I to enjoy their Societyunless I return to Tennessee.” Somewhatdisingenuously he adds, “But duty to myfamily would say Stay Here.”

    A few months later, he is writing copi-ously from the Lexington, California areato “Dear Father and Mother” that “Since Iwrote to you last I have been about 100miles down the country in Montara andSantacruz (sic) counties looking at the

    country with a view to buy land if I liked itas well as [into?] the coast. I am going tostart tomorrow back up to Petaluma,Sonoma County to look again at the landthat I wrote to you about a short time sinceI can buy land (unincorporated) inSantaclara county within 5 miles of Gilroyfor $20.00 an acre” where “one man cancultivate two acres easier than one athome.”

    South of Gilroy, Rodgers found amountain range, well-watered and came to“the headwaters of the Pathro (Pajaro?)River which at this place is in the high hillsback of the coast range mountains afford-ing pasture 6 months of the year for vastherds of stock...extending down the coastto Mexico.” After further exploring, hefound a small inland village of stock raisersand Spaniards, called San Juan; then,changing to a westerly direction, he cameto the fertile Pathro Valley where 50 to 60bushels of corn to the acre were producedand 300 to 500 bushels of Irishpotatoes.The only town in the valley, hefinds, is Watsonville, where fruit alsoabounds and there is a nearby steamboatlanding. Rodgers notes that, “the surpluscrop is shipped to San Francisco where itfinds a ready market.”

    Although land turned out to be moreexpensive in the Watsonville area, after fur-ther research, Arthur and his brothers de-cided that profits were likely to be moregenerous as well. By 1867, he writes fromWoodside that future letters should be ad-dressed to Watsonville. The Rodgers’ fruitgrowing and processing interests flourishedthere, and the family was active in thecommunity until the early 1990s. Amonghis descendants are two nieces who votedin the first election after women were al-lowed to vote in California (1919) andnoted author John Steinbeck.

    In addition to establishing a business,Arthur found time to study for and receivegeneral and secondary certificates from theCalifornia Superintendent of Public In-struction, in 1867 and 1870, followed by a

    degree from the University of California in1872. The same year, he began reading lawwith the firm of Wright and Nourse andpassed the bar in 1875.

    Whether he ever taught school is notclear, but it is evident that he was a personof great energy and wide interests. By 1878,he was writing to his family fromEdinburgh and Glasgow; and in 1880 and1881 from Hong Kong, Beirut, andBombay, from whence he went on toConstantinople and Vienna on the classicGrand Tour of the well-educated, well-fi-nanced young fellow of the period. His let-ters are interesting and entertaining, and heobviously had been waiting a long time tosee the world.

    When he first explored the area north ofWatsonville, he had written, “the roadpassed over table land and undulatingplains, here I see the finest forests of liveoak that I have seen in the country [which]in many places fills the very description thatwe so often get of the jungles of India,where the wild beasts rove at large andwhere it will ever be impossible to subduehim until the forest is wiped away by thehand of civilization the huntsman onlydares to penetrate the outskirts of the jungleat the hazard of his life.”

    Perhaps fruit-growing seemed tame afterthe ruins of the Temple of Jupiter atBaalbek. Or perhaps his travels were judgedto complete the necessary cosmopolitanpolish. Whatever, he went on to a distin-guished career in the San Francisco law firmof Rodgers & Paterson and as a notedlitterateur. He also became interested inpublic affairs and was appointed a regentof the University of California in 1883 byGovernor George C. Perkins.

    After many years wedded to his booksand his profession, Rodgers surprised hiscolleagues and friends by marrying thelovely widow, Elizabeth Montgomery, asfully reported in the San Francisco Chroniclefor May 16, 1895. The clipping, includedin the Rodgers collection, features charm-ing pen-and-ink sketches of the principalsby George E. Lyon.

    Have you heard of the plan to create acircus in order to turn Parisians intogood citizens? Do you recall the time theangel of death rained thunderbolts downon members of the French clergy and aris-tocracy? What about the printing presson the moon? If you spend your time read-ing from The Bancroft Library’s pamphletcollection on the French Revolution, youwill encounter these and other fascinatingtopics.

    In 1923, Bancroft acquired the collec-tion of Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin, anineteenth-century French politician fa-mous for his advocacy of universal man-hood suffrage. Fueled by subsequent acqui-sitions, French Revolutionary materials cur-rently number in excess of 10,000 docu-ments and date from 1789-1799. Historicalresources range from posters to official gov-ernment proclamations to a manuscript di-ary kept by an anonymous Parisian royalist,who each day recorded the weather, his so-cial activities and on occasion, news of whowas guillotined that day.

    At the heart of the collection are thou-sands of serene and simple looking pam-phlets. Although many of these documentsare catalogued and readily available to stu-

    dents and scholars, a number of pamphletsremain untouched. However, since 1996student assistants—including myself—havehad the opportunity to examine, study, andcatalog these rare items, many of which arenot found in leading French libraries. Oncethis work is complete, Bancroft’s collectionwill be an invaluable tool for researchersaround the world. Anyone with Internet ac-cess will be able to search and locate previ-ously unknown pamphlets by title, author,or subject heading and trace the work ofspecific printers and publishers.

    I began work on the pamphlet collec-tion in the summer of 2002. I thought thisproject would be a good way to get myhands on some rare material from eigh-teenth century France and help me learn alittle more about the French Revolution it-self. As I quickly discovered, there wasmore I needed to learn about theRevolution. I knew something about thefall of the Bastille and the execution of theking, but I soon realized that this paltryknowledge would not suffice. So, off I wasscurrying around the library to figure outjust what some of the pamphlets were reallyabout, and in the process I learned a greatdeal about obscure generals and politicians,uprisings in out-of-the-way towns, and theintricacies of property law during theRevolution.

    Revolutionary (French) Ideas

    To be honest, some of the pamphlets Icome across are, well, not terribly interestingto me. I have encountered a number ofitems relating to tax law as well as numerousdeclarations of the patriotism of this or thattown. However, I have also found some realgems such as the long discussion of why anational circus, as mentioned above, was sonecessary. Some of the pamphlets bring outthe more grizzly side of the French Revolu-tion. I find it impossible to forget one cel-ebrating the death of Robespierre and hiscollaborators. Appearing above the title is awoodcut with the image of a guillotine, infront of which the executioner gleefullyholds up the head of one of the executedmen. Another pamphlet describes the deathof a royalist general. It can be refreshing tosee that in the midst of war and upheaval,the French maintained a keen sense of hu-mor. A satirical pamphlet claims to beprinted on the moon, and there are pam-phlets that make fun the king, the clergy,and famous politicians. A personal favoriteis one that pretends to record the proceed-ings of a group of aristocratic women whodemand a national academy of fashion. It isa collection that includes everything fromthe banal to the gruesome to the ridiculousand as such it is a wonderful indicator of theincredible riches and complexity of the age.

    Exhibits at The Bancroft Libraryhighlight important and interestingcollections, inform and entertain a widespectrum of visitors, encourage scholarlyresearch, stimulate new acquisitions, and

    contribute to thegrowth and develop-

    ment of the libraryand its programs.A recent exhibit,“Bear in Mind:The California

    Grizzly at TheBancroft Library,”

    achieved these goals ina variety of ways.

    This exhibit allowed the co-curators,Susan Snyder and Bill Brown, to high-light a wide spectrum of materials, in-cluding paintings, photographs, litho-graphs, maps, and other visual materials.Other items on display included hand-written transcriptions of interviews withearly California settlers and pioneers,documents from Berkeley biologists, anda wide range of advertising and commer-cial publications. Loans from Cal’sPhoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropol-ogy and the Museum of Vertebrate Zool-

    ogy provided a California grizzly bearskull and claw, and California Indianartifacts. A wealth of rare books, jour-nals, musical scores, posters, and othermaterials enhanced the visual and tex-tual documentation of the bear’s ex-tinction. Consideration of the Califor-nia Grizzly Bear as the symbol of theState of California and as mascot forthe University of California, Berkeleyprovided the opportunity to explorethe “re-creation” of this animal in ourcontemporary culture.

    In the course of creating the ex-hibit, Bancroft staff located and ac-quired rare and unique historical docu-ments central to the exhibit’s theme.Most notably, Bancroft acquired theoriginal manuscript for TheodoreHittel’s The Adventures of James CapenAdams: Mountaineer and Grizzly BearHunter, of California, published in1860. The 600+ pages, Hittel’s writtenrecord of interviews with Adams, anoted hunter, trapper, and showman,provide a detailed glimpse into the lifeand times of one of California’s legend-ary figures.

    The Friends of The Bancroft Li-brary hosted an overflow crowd at the

    opening reception on December 12,2002. More than two hundred guestsdined on many favorite foods of theCalifornia Grizzly Bear as DirectorCharles B. Faulhaber offered welcom-ing remarks. Exhibit co-curators SusanSnyder and Bill Brown discussed theprocess of identifying, selecting, anddisplaying the more than one hundreditems on view.

    Publicity efforts for the exhibit be-gan with the distribution of a two uni-versity press releases to Bay Area mediaoutlets, including newspapers, radio

    and television stations, and UC Berke-ley publications. One press release pro-moted the exhibit while the other high-lighted a companion effort, the creationof “Bears of Berkeley” a map that iden-tifies some twenty-seven grizzly bearstatues and artforms in and around theCal Campus. With the support of theUniversity Relations Office a digitalslide show of selected images and thetext of the two press releases appearedon the university’s home page. In subse-quent days area newspapers contactedThe Bancroft Library and articles ap-peared in such papers as the San Fran-cisco Chronicle, the Oakland Tribuneand Marin and Contra Costa Countynewspapers.

    San Francisco radio station KQEDFM, also intrigued by the unusual ex-

    hibit and the array of materials gatheredfor display, broadcast an interview withexhibit curators. UC publications alsopublicized and promoted the exhibit.The Berkeleyan (August 21, 2002)printed a lengthy, illustrated article andBene Legere (Fall, 2002, No. 61), theUniversity Library’s newsletter pub-lished a two-page color story. CaliforniaMonthly, the journal of the UC BerkeleyAlumni Association, published a coverstory on the exhibit in the November,2002 issue. “Bear in Mind” also provedto be an attractive option for visitors

    and guests dur-ing Homecom-ing Weekend,October 18-19,2002. Some550+ individu-als visitedBancroft to viewthe exhibit andcollect exhibitposters, buttons,and the “Bearsof Berkeley”map.

    As news ofthe exhibit trav-eled, exhibit cu-rators reviewedinquiries fromsuch diverse or-

    ganizations as the Oakland Zoo, theSmithsonian Institution, and the Cali-fornia Exhibition Resources Alliance(CERA), a consortium of museums andhistorical agencies across the state. Thelatter organization is interested in secur-ing funding to allow facsimiles of theseexhibit materials to travel throughoutCalifornia in future years. The OaklandZoo has received funding to create a“California Wilderness” habitat display,and our information on the CaliforniaGrizzly Bear may prove useful in thisimportant project.

    The popularity of this exhibit willcontinue long after the actual exhibit isremoved. A digital version of Bear inMind (bancroft.berkeley.edu/Exhibits/bearinmind/exhibit) is now available,and Heyday Press of Berkeley, Califor-nia is pursuing publication of an illus-trated volume, expanding upon the im-ages and text provided in the exhibit.

    A STEP AT A TIMECombining teaching with research and collectiondevelopment at the Regional Oral History Office

    I believe that no activity in the universityshould be divorced from teaching.When I accepted my appointment at Ber-keley as Professor of History and Directorof the Regional Oral History Office inThe Bancroft Library, I wanted to developa teaching program to bring students intoROHO and the Bancroft as active collabo-rators. I offered my first class in the spring2002 term, History 103R, “AmericanLives, American History: Oral History andthe Understanding of Social Change.” Stu-dents were asked to conduct a short inter-view and then write an analysis of how theinterview added something new to under-standing an aspect of US history.

    Two things made the class a speciallearning opportunity. First, professionalROHO staff worked with me to help trainstudents. Alyce Kalmar, a senior majoringin history, conducted interviews with punkmusicians active in San Francisco in the1970s. Caroline Crawford, ROHO’s vet-eran music interviewer, mentored Alyce,sharing practical tips Caroline has learnedover the years of interviewing dozens ofclassical, jazz, and blues musicians.Caroline is one of many talented staff oncampus with deep knowledge of subjectsof value for students. We can augment thevalue of a Berkeley education if studentswere to interact more with the many pro-fessionals like Caroline on campus whocan contribute to teaching,

    Secondly, interviews from the class haveled to new additions to the Bancroft’s oralhistory collections. Punk music was a topicthat ROHO has never touched. Alyce’stranscripts will be bound together into avolume and added to ROHO’s music his-tory collection. Alyce’s senior thesis will bean appendix to the volume, her analysisand insights aiding future students of thistopic. Another history senior DavidWashburn conducted interviews for myclass with migrant workers from Mexico,

    providing insight on the Latino experiencein this state. His interviews complementROHO’s Mexican American Leadership inCalifornia project, funded by the WellsFargo Foundation.

    When students know that their workcan become part of the Bancroft collec-tions, their attitude transforms. The assign-ment is no longer done simply to completerequirements. They produce work that fu-ture students and scholars will turn to forinformation for years to come. Knowingthis, students prepare their work withgreater care, and their writing takes ongreater confidence.

    History 103R was the first step in aprogram to bring students into ROHO.The ten students enrolled in the classworked hard, most on projects of theirown design. Sarah Woodcock interviewedfire fighters. Her work for my class wonher a highly competitive Summer Under-graduate Research Fellowship that allowedher to continue working with me. Shecompleted a senior thesis examining the in-tegration of the Oakland Fire Departmentin the 1950s, based on professional-leveloral history interviews. Her interviews willform a series on fire fighting in California.Several students contributed to ongoingROHO projects. Ben Bicais interviewed aretired day care teacher on child develop-ment programs developed during WorldWar II for the children of women em-ployed in defense industry, an interviewthat fits into ROHO’s Rosie the Riveter/World War II Homefront project under-taken in collaboration with the NationalPark Service and the City of Richmond.

    David Washburn joined the Rosie theRiveter/World War II Homefront projectteam. He focused first on the history ofMexican Americans in Richmond beforeand after the war, a subject for which therewas little documentation. David inter-viewed eleven people on their war and

    postwar experiences. His interviews jointhe Bancroft collections and they will be ondisplay at the National Park Service’s visitorinformation center for the national historicpark in Richmond. He wrote a senior the-sis based on his interviews, and he is nowwriting an honors thesis on country musicin wartime Richmond.

    ROHO is a special place on campuswhere research, education, and collectiondevelopment form a seamless web. In addi-tion to course offerings, I am offering un-dergraduates research apprenticeship op-portunities through the URAP program.Seven students have interviewed for aproject studying Portuguese and Brazilianmigration to California.

    This spring, I am teaching a freshmanseminar on the history of UC. Studentsstudy ROHO’s many interviews conductedwith faculty and administrators, talk to in-terviewers and interviewees, and then con-duct a brief interview on an aspect of cam-pus history. Professor Len Duhl and I areoffering a course cross-listed between theDepartment of History and the School ofPublic Health to introduce students to theuse of oral history for the study of healthand health care in California. I will offer ahumanities research class in the TownsendCenter next academic year, as we continueto expand our outreach on campus.

    Working closely with students benefitsoral history research because their interestsopen up new research areas, while provid-ing students with practical research experi-ence that will be valuable to them afterthey graduate. Successful education alwaysinvolves mutual learning. A class is goingwell when I am learning something fromthe students, when they respond to whatthey are learning from me with perspectivesthat open up new ways of looking at theworld for me. Creative interaction betweenstudents and staff at ROHO brings in newresearch materials permanently enrichingthe collections of The Bancroft Library.

    In the spring 1998 issue ofBancroftiana, we asked thequestion, “Where is the lastportrait of Mark Twain?” Now,finally, we can provide theanswer. The oil portrait of theauthor, completed in Florence inthe spring of 1904 by the distin-guished Italian painter EdoardoGelli, heretofore was known onlyin the form of an engravingreproduced in Harper’s Weekly inSeptember 1904. The paintingitself had been shipped toAmerica and exhibited at the1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposi-tion in St. Louis, but then it haddropped from sight. Lin Salamoof the Mark Twain Projectsuggested in 1998 that Gelli’spainting—which Clara ClemensGabrilowitsch (later Samossoud)claimed was the last one done ofher father—might be “languish-ing forgotten in some attic.”Salamo has since tracked thepainting down, by way of alisting in the Smithsonian’sNational Portrait Gallery onlinedatabase. It was in storage—miscatalogued as the work of“G. Eelli”—at the Henry FordMuseum in Dearborn, Michigan.Curator Henry J. Prebys, alertedby Reference Archivist CarolWhittaker, was quickly able tolocate the portrait—a small workon canvas (28 inches by38 inches) in a “gilt compositionframe”—in “good condition”in the museum’s storage facility.Unfortunately, because of the sketchy documentation of Ford’s many early acquisi-tions, the museum has not been able to provide any provenance information. A1936 letter from Clara to Henry Ford indicates that she donated her father’sfavorite writing desk to the museum, and there is a slim possibility that she alsodonated the Gelli portrait at that time.     At the end of April, 2002, Jamy andCharles Faulhaber traveled down toBakersfield to participate in the presenta-tion of Following the Cattle King: A Life-time of Agriculture, Water Management,and Water Conservation in California’s Cen-tral Valley, the oral history of George W.Nickel, Jr.

    This was truly a family affair for a va-riety of reasons. In the first place, GeorgeNickel is the great-grandson of HenryMiller, one of the towering figures ofCalifornia’s nineteenth-century history asthe owner of the Miller & Lux cattle em-pire, at its height over a million acres of

    range and farmland in California, Nevada,and Oregon. George was responsible forplacing the extensive Miller & Lux ar-chives in Bancroft almost forty years ago.They have proved to be a gold mine forscholars ever since, most recently forDavid Igler, whose Industrial Cowboys :Miller & Lux and the Transformation of theFar West, 1850-1920, was published lastyear by the University of California Press.

    This was a family affair fromBancroft’s side as well, since JamyFaulhaber, Charles’s wife, served as a probono interviewer for the oral history. Theproject started in 1997, when Georgecame to Bancroft to use his great-grandfather’s papers and we suggested thathe might be a good subject for an oralhistory, given his family background and

    his extensive knowledge of water issuesin California. George finally agreed in1998, provided that Jamy would serve asthe interviewer because of her own famil-iarity with his family and with water is-sues. Jamy’s father, Harold O’Banion, andGeorge served together on the State Rec-lamation Board under Governor EdmundG. “Pat” Brown during the 60s; and Jamyfrequently accompanied them on theirtrips to Board meetings in Sacramento.George would fly his own plane fromBakersfield, pick Jamy and her father upat the Dos Palos air strip, near Los Banosin the San Joaquin Valley, and then go onto Sacramento. On those trips Jamy

    would learn a great dealabout California water is-sues, especially flood con-trol, as George and her fa-ther discussed the theboard’s agenda.

    The oral history inter-views, conducted over aperiod of three years, from1998 to 2001, were heldat the Nickels’ Rio BravoRanch near Bakersfield,as well as during vacationsin Lake Tahoe or on thebeach in Carpinteria. Inaddition to George’s oral

    history, it also includes an interview withhis wife Adele (Dodo) Nickel and inter-views with three of George’s oldest friends,Dr. Benson Roe, William Parrott, andDouglas Moody..

    After tracing George’s family back-ground and early years growing up on thePeninsula and at UC Berkeley, the oralhistory focuses on George’s early careerwith Miller & Lux, the legal issues in-volved in breaking the Henry Miller Trust,flood control, water rights, and land de-velopment in the San Joaquin Valley, thedevelopment of Buena Vista Lake and RioBravo in Bakersfield, George’s service onthe State Reclamation Board (1959-66),and environmental issues on the KernRiver. George has been a key player insome of the most significant develop-

    train students in the technical aspects ofworking with papyri and to incorporatethe information they yield into studies ofancient society, religion, economics and lit-erature. Through the Undergraduate Re-search Apprentice Program, FarhadMahmoudi, Estelle Hofschneider, MollyAllen, Arica Bryant, Susan Duong, andPaul Waite have assisted CTP with a vari-ety of tasks, including cataloging, interleav-ing, and digital imaging. Dr. LeonidasPetrakis and Monte Vista High School stu-dent Grace Jackson have also contributedto the interleaving work. Graduate stu-dents William Short, Ken Jones, BrigitFlannery, Chris Hoffman, and the presentauthor, Elisabeth O’Connell, have partici-pated in these projects as well, and are alsoediting a selection of texts for publication.These editions will appear in volumes sixand seven of The Tebtunis Papyri, a seriesthat has been dormant since 1976. Vol-ume five of the series, Arthur Verhoogt’s,Regaling Officials in Ptolemaic Egypt isforthcoming.

    Last spring, Hickey taught a graduateseminar in papyrology, and he and Pro-fessor Donald Mastronarde have intro-duced papyrology to the undergraduate

    curriculum this springin their “Graeco-RomanEgypt” and “Papyrusand Greek Literature”courses, respectively.Hickey will also con-tinue teaching Coptic,the last stage of theEgyptian language inwhich the Greek alpha-bet replaced the cum-bersome Egyptianscript. Through theMoffitt Fund, Bancroftwas able to purchasetwo fragments of Coptictexts (one on papyrus,the other on parchment)for CTP, pieces associ-ated with the late an-tique archive of theEgyptian bishopPisenthius. The additionof these Coptic texts ex-

    pands the breadth of the collection to in-clude examples of all the languages andscripts commonly used in Graeco-Ro-man Egypt. Through its recently inaugu-rated annual lecture series, CTP is hop-ing to involve the community as well. InApril 2002 and April 2003, CambridgeProfessor Dorothy Thompson and King’sCollege, London Professor DominicRathbone presented CTP’s first and sec-

    ond public lectures respectively. WillyClarysse of the Katholieke UniversiteitLeuven has accepted an invitation to lec-ture in 2003.

    The Center has also been activewithin the national and internationalpapyrological communities. Stanford andSacramento State University have alreadyjoined a regional partnership initiated byHickey, wherein the Center will collectrecords and images of papyri held by in-stitutions in the western United Statesand incorporate them into the AdvancedPapyrological Information System (APIS)web database. The goal is to make mate-rial from disparate collections accessibleto scholars working throughout theworld. In 2004, Berkeley will host theAmerican Society of Papyrologists (ASP)second Summer Seminar, a six-week pro-gram that will introduce graduate stu-dents and junior faculty to prominentNorth American collections and providethem with the skills to use papyri in theirresearch.

    It has been a productive (and busy)year for CTP. Readers will be able tokeep abreast of further developments(and opportunities) on CTP’s newwebsite (tebtunis.berkeley.edu), which isset to launch in summer 2003.

    The Bancroft Library lost a dearfriend and colleague with theuntimely death of Peter Palmquist, 66,famed Arcata photographer and historian.Peter was a frequent visitor, collaborator,and speaker at Bancroft. The author ofmore than 60 books, Peter accumulatedwhat some recognize as the greatestcollection of 19th century Westernphotography. Approximately 85,000 of hisestimated 250,000 images were taken byHumboldt County photographers. At thetime of his death Peter was at work on anarchive of women’s photography of theAmerican West.

    Peter’s accomplishments are too lengthyto list in total. He is the founding editor ofThe Daguerreian Annual; past president ofthe National Stereoscopic Association andfounder and curator of the Women in Pho-tography International Archive. In his career,Peter participated in more than 100 exhibi-tions of historical photography. He discov-ered his love for old photographs while shop-ping in a McKinleyville antique store. Awoman there asked him if he collected any-thing, and when he replied no, she gave hima few old photographs which would becomethe genesis of his later passion.

    Peter Palmquist Susan Snyder, Head of Access Services,described Peter’s relationship with manyBancrofters, “Peter Palmquist was an extraor-dinary person. He was generous and eagerwith his knowledge and time, yet modest,warm, and witty. He was supportive and en-couraging; he contributed and participated;and he would appear in unexpected places.He excelled in putting together odd piecesand making a whole. Peter was a whole-maker.”

    James Eason, an integral part of Bancroft’sPictoral staff, observed that, “Over the years,Peter took an active interest in our collec-tions and their welfare. He was an early ad-vocate for improved housing and conserva-tion work for our unique daguerreian hold-ings and, of course, for our large collectionof mammoth plate prints by CarletonWatkins. In 1999-2000, with grant fundingfor a major project secured, Peter worked in-tensively with our Conservation TreatmentLab staff to physically stabilize and documentall of our daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, andcased tintypes. These priceless historical arti-facts are now better preserved for future gen-erations, and they are fully cataloged and digi-tized for viewing over the world-wide-web.(http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/collections/casedphotos/project.html).”

    Eason also noted that, “In less formal ca-pacities, Peter has been a source of advice on

    major acquisitions, written expert letters ofsupport for grant applications, authored ar-ticles for Bancroftiana, given talks to the cam-pus community, and even provided a day-long workshop for Bancroft staff in the iden-tification and dating of photographs. Overthe past few years he was also very active in aproject, initiated by the Getty Museum, tocompile a catalogue raisonné of all knownWatkins mammoth plates world wide. Heparticipated in an intensive survey ofBancroft’s 650-plus mammoths believed tobe the largest collection in existence. The lossof Peter Palmquist is deeply felt at Bancroftand around the world. Not only have we losta priceless resource, but we have lost a goodfriend. It is hard not to look forward to hisnext appearance in the Reading Room.”

    The Special Collections Treatment Teamin the Library’s Conservation Unit had a closeworking relationship with Peter. “Peterworked in the Conservation Treatment Labo-ratory with the conservation staff over a pe-riod of nine months. Together we stabilizedand documented The Bancroft Library’s casedphotographs. He would open up each casedphotograph with great skill, care and atten-tion. As he opened the cases, he would sharehis discoveries, drawing on his mastery of thehistory of daguerrotypes, ambrotypes andcased tintypes. His intellectual generositymade us all richer. It was a great pleasure tohave his presence here in the lab and we weregreatly saddened to hear of his death. He willbe sorely missed by the photographic con-servation community for the treasury ofknowledge that he had amassed over theyears.”
