DIRECTIONS FOR AFTERSCHOOL PICK UP IN CIRCLE Our goal is to not only keep traffic flowing in and out of the circle onto the main road, but to also
minimize traffic both in the circle and on the main road. PLEASE be mindful and aware of our traffic
flow
If you’re using the circle for pick up, please make sure that you’re following procedures for the
SAFETY of your child(ren). If you’re not willing or able to follow procedures, PLEASE PARK ON
THE ROAD and pick up your children from class
PLEASE drive to the FARTHEST POINT in the circle. DO NOT hold up or slow the flow of traffic
DO NOT leave car UNATTENDED OR PARK in the circle. Please stay in the car to allow the flow
of the circle to go smoothly. If not, please park on the main road
Move your car accordingly to close the gap, as cars go out of the circle…this helps to lessen the
traffic in the circle and on the main road.
While in the circle, please DO NOT park too close to the car in front of you. This allows you to drive
out of that lane as soon as your child gets in the car or you will be stuck
As always, PLEASE WATCH Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega and any of our Staff that are overseeing the circle,
as they flag you down for your kids. DO NOT move your car unless you are indicated to do so
DO NOT signal for your children to come between cars…For the sake of safety, please drive up to
Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega/Staff in the outer lane of the circle, for us to be able to place your children safely
in your cars
Once the JPOs’ shift has ended and they leave the circle, please feel free to drop off, wait and or park
in the circle or bus terminal
Please DO NOT SPEED in the circle for the SAFETY of ALL of our children & families
NO LEFT TURNS from the circle entrance from 7:30-8:00 am and in the afternoons daily.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS!!! 1. PLEASE call our He’eia Office for an Off Campus release form/pass, due to Doctor & Dental appointments
or other reasons. This allows us to help you in having your child(ren) readily waiting for you in the office with
their belongings, and helps to alleviate confusion, mixups and the disruption of instructional learning.
2. Please update all phone numbers and emergency contacts for our records.
3. Please DO NOT send your child(ren) to school sick. Students with diarrhea, fever, throw up, fractions, serious
head injuries, pink eye, unexplainable rashes, hacking coughs, and green and yellow mucus, are an automatic
send home once they come to the Health Room
4. School gets out on Mon-Fri at 2:05 pm, with the exception of Wednesday when school gets out at 1:20 pm.
Please make arrangements to have your child(ren) picked up ON TIME. Please call the Office when making
arrangements for your child to be picked up by someone else other than yourself, or if you’ll be late in pick up.
5. Please make sure that your child’s meal tracker account has enough money for your child to make meal
purchases. Notifications on negative balances will be sent out.
6. School wide notices will sent out weekly in Thursday envelopes. Please read through all newsletters, notices,
and forms to be currently updated on information you may need to know.
Thank you for participating in this year’s Pennies for Patients donation program. As a school we were able to raise over $1,730.00 to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our school’s donation will help with blood cancer research and help with treatments of current blood cancer patients. Thank you again for your generous donations. Aloha, He’eia School Student Government (H.S.S.G)
Aloha & Happy March!
If your child will be absent from the program and will be picked up early from school, PLEASE
CALL HE’EIA A+ OFFICE at 808 233-5684. Please leave a message if there’s no answer.
This will alleviate any confusion and miscommunication. Payments for A+ are due on the 1st FRIDAY of each month. We are humbly asking that A+
payments be made by check or money order.
A+ program hours are from 2:05-5:30 pm on Mon., Tues., Thurs., & Fri. and from 1:20-5:30
pm on Wed. Late fee charges will apply after 5:30 pm: $5 per child/every 15 minutes. Morning care is also available from 6:00-7:30 am for $5/day, $15/week, and $50/month.
PARENTS/FAMILIES: Please make sure that whoever is designated to pick up your
child(ren), PLEASE HAVE ID’S ON HAND AT ALL TIMES and present to Coordinator or
Group leader upon request. Also, if there ever is a change in who will be picking up your child(ren) and they are NOT listed on your Authorized pick up, PLEASE CALL OR SEND A
NOTE WITH YOUR CHILD with names and numbers so we can also add them to the Authorized pick up list. They also MUST have their ID on hand for verification.
Please use the LOCATOR BOARD that’s located in the front of the cafeteria that states the
location of your child(ren’s) group. Please be advised that due to safety reasons, our bathroom policy has changed where the
entire group is taken every 30-45 minutes.
There will be NO A+ program for the following dates. Please mark your calendars and
make necessary arrangements accordingly. NO A+ PROGRAM ON MAY 13 (May
Day) & MAY 26, 2016 (last day of school). Parents, it is IMPORTANT that you know that should you pull your child(ren) out of the A+
program, the possibility of returning is very slim. Please take this into consideration when
contemplating in pulling them out of the program. Applications for next year 2016-2017 A+ will be coming out in May… PLEASE fill out asap
and turn in BEFORE this school year ends, as it is on a first come first serve basis. This
will alleviate confusion and problems in the new school year…so please be on the lookout for
that. Starting in the month of July please be aware that our Kama’aina A+ fees will go up to $100
per child.
Mrs. Chang, 6th grade, will be collecting old, broken, and used prescription or reading glasses for the needy for her “Making a
Difference” Project this year. Glasses will be donated to Dr. Earl Nakagawa of Family Eye
Care Associates here in our community. Dr. Nakagawa’s
mission is to service poor villages in the Dominican Republic. Mrs. Chang will be collecting glasses
all year long.

student to bring in one canned good. All canned goods are collected and are given to a charity and/or community group that helps needy families within
our Kaneohe community. During the month of February till March 14th…we’re asking if possible, that all students bring in one canned good. Please have
all canned goods turned in to your child(ren)’s homeroom by March 14, 2016. The homerooms from Grades K-3 and Grades 4-6 with the most canned goods

LOST & FOUND
We have a lost and found barrel that we keep next to the custodian room and workroom. There are times when lost and found items are placed on the rail in the main hallway, so that as students and families are passing by, they’ll claim these lost items. If your child(ren) have items that are missing or they may have forgotten at school, please feel free to check our Lost and Found barrel.
UNIFORMS If you have any old uniforms that you would like to get rid of, please drop them off to the Office or to Ms. Tee. Thank You to those that have donated shirts throughout the year. It has been such a big help for a lot of our families here at He’eia. MAHALO!
Grade 4
Fourth graders had an exciting month with two field trips,
preparations for May Day, and a special presentation about
tobacco-free education. Our trip to Papahana Kualoa's Waipao Valley took place on February
11 where we learned about Hawaiian culture, history, and did service-learning in the Lo'i patches. Students enjoyed the
beauty of Apuhua'a He'eia while learning mo'olelo and oli. We also traveled to the Castle High School Performing Arts Center for a play where some of our fifth graders performed on February 17. Two medical
students from the John A. Burns School of Medicine presented information and
activities about a tobacco-free lifestyle sponsored by "Tar Wars". We continue to work
with Kumu Mary every other Wednesday learning mele
and hula for our May Day performance this spring.
Mrs. Taba, Mrs. Galindo, and Mrs. Tanaka

Grade 3
Students are getting ready to take the SBA test that all 3rd graders
take. Please look out for the schedule of our testing days, and be sure your child goes to sleep early, comes to school on time, and eats a hardy breakfast. It
would be helpful if you reinforce taking your time and not rushing,
reading the passage and question carefully, and looking back at the
article to support your answer. Spring Break seems longer this
year. While we want your child to enjoy the break, we also want
your child to be ready for the SBA test which will happen soon after they return to school. Your child needs to read for the Reading
Log (16 or more entries a month), and continue to do KidBiz, IXL
and Moby Max. Thank you to our wonderful
parents who donated to our Taste of Heeia! A big MAHALO to the
parents of Kela Martin, Cole Katsuda and Penny Pak! And THANK YOU to Kaylee Cieri's mom who is going to make our
fried noodles.
We appreciate you!
Grade 1
During the third quarter we learned about 3 important
people in American History: George Washington, who
helped to write our Constitution, Abraham
Lincoln, who wanted everyone to be treated
equally and Martin Luther King, Jr. who helped to
change unfair laws. In Math the majority of our students are able to add and subtract
to 10 with speed and accuracy. They have
memorized the doubles and doubles plus one facts.
They also are learning to add by making a TEN. In
Language Arts our students are doing a writing
assignment on inventions and animals. We will use this topic as their speaking presentation for quarter 3.
We continue to work hard to complete all our
assignments for this quarter.
Grade One Teachers
Kindergarten Dear Parents, Spring is just around the corner. It’s hard to believe that we are almost three-quarters through the school year. The children have grown and matured, socially and academically. They are learning to write sentences with correct use of spacing, capitalization, and punctuation. In journal writing, they are using their knowledge of letter sounds and the high frequency words. We ask that you continue to read to your child and review the high-frequency words during the Spring vacation as well as have your child practice reading short stories and writing sentences. We will continue to practice our math and phonics skills. We are learning to add and subtract numbers as well as decompose numbers. We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Friday, March 4th. Please have your child wear red, black, and white or a Dr. Seuss t-shirt on that day. Green eggs and ham will be served for breakfast, ice cream will be served at lunch, and we will have guest readers reading to our classes. His books allow us to use our imagination and reinforce the concepts of rhyme and rhythm. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Theodor Seuss Geisel
The Kindergarten Teachers
Grade 5
TASTE OF HEEIA - Please come and support the 5th Grade booth on Friday, March 11! We will be selling Papa John’s pizza and Ju Mui pops in
order to raise funds for our May Day costumes. Bring your family and friends to this
enjoyable and delicious event! MAY DAY - With May Day coming up in a few
months, we will shortly be soliciting any experienced seamstresses to help us sew
costumes for our classes. If you have the talent to sew and are interested in helping, please
contact any of the 5th grade teachers. A flier and sign up will be sent out sometime in March.
SPRING BREAK - Spring Break is from March 16 through March 28 with school resuming on Tuesday March 29. Although it is not
required, if you would like your child to keep their brains active, they can always access our IXL,
KidBiz, and Moby Max online programs. SPIRIT DAY - Congratulations to our 5th graders on our 5th win of the year! We were impressed
with the variety of crazy socks that day! Our next spirit day will be Wacky Hair Day
on Wednesday, March 30. Have fun expressing yourself with an unusual hairstyle. You may use
hair accessories, fake hair, and colored hair spray to complete your wacky lock. Be sure to follow our dress code and have your hair styled
prior to coming to school.
