Greetings!

A note from Fr. George... Saint Andrew’s Church, Marble Dale

July, 2020 I would like to start this article for the church paper with a long quote from one of our parishioners. It is an email that was sent to me. It is a reflection that is on our minds currently. I have talked to several people who are asking the same questions. “Maybe we all are feeling the frustrations in the world today. Ah, that word just slips out of my mouth..."frustrated"... "frustration". Someone said, "when you complain you are in a gray area of sadness, trust the word of the Lord, go help someone and you will feel better". ... (might have been Pope Francis) "Good is to be done and evil is to be avoided".... The Black Lives Matter group and other anarchy groups have to understand "everyone has a cross to bear." Jesus died for the sins of our ancestors! Concentrate on your family. Teach them right from wrong, spend time with your children playing catch, reading the bible, discussing things, playing games, etc. Family is being assaulted by TV, porn, worldly things, the devil, etc. Do some self-sacrificing and turn toward our children. Read the bible as a family, “dig into scripture like a sandbox”. (didn't write down who said all of this but do so believe it!) Set a good example for your children. Learn from past mistakes and move on. Give it to Jesus! Read something in the bible every day! So George, how do we get the message out that the answers are in the Bible? It's all been done before! It all can go right or it all can go wrong, it's up to each of us, right?! Read the Wisdom of Solomon, David's story, Daniel's, etc... How do we comfort those who are frustrated? We give them tools, the sacraments. We baptize, we teach (the Lord's Prayer for starters)! We forgive and repent! We certainly don't destroy all that our ancestors worked so hard to pass on to us. Don't we always want something better for our kids? We certainly don't desire the worst! Peace” That is a long quote, but a lot of people are thinking and asking the same questions. Is there a sinister plot that is trying to destroy America? Why does God allow all the chaos that we are experiencing? Why don’t our elected leaders do more to combat the destruction that the mob is doing? I watch the news every day and wonder the same things.

I find that I always come back to the same answer, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” It is my mantra. (see below) While I live on this earth I want to be walking with Jesus. Those who decide to live without Him are making a choice that is theirs to make. If they do not want to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, then the Bible tells us to kick the dust off our feet. It means, “walk away.” I know that we are living in very “disobedient times” as far as the bible is concerned. We have the audacity to think that we can improve upon the Word of Almighty God. Then again, we often ignore the bible altogether. We tend to accept what the culture says rather than the Written Word of Holy Scripture. We certainly can do better than that. George + What does “the joy of the Lord is my strength” mean? "Strength" in the same verse is a Hebrew word meaning “a place or means of safety, protection refuge, or stronghold.” The root word of strength means “to be strong, prevail; to make firm, strengthen.” The joy of the Lord is a constant gladness and cause to rejoice. It stems from an inner strengthening from our relationship with Him. (Nehemiah 8:10) God Bless. George +

A Prayer for the power of the Spirit Among the People of God

God of all power and love, We give thanks for your unfailing presence

And the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire.

Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: A people who pray, worship, learn,

Break bread, share life, heal neighbors, Bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit.

Wherever and however we gather, Unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission,

That we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

(This is a new collect composed by a team of Episcopalians and Lutherans calling us both to renewal in the midst of the pandemic and also honoring the nearly two decades of full communion between The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Presiding Bishop

Curry and the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, invite our parishes to pray this collect every Sunday from Pentecost through the first Sunday in September.)

“May the light of Christ rising in hope and glory dispel the darkness that rises in our hearts and minds.”

Remembering church members:  Maria Randall Allen (July 21, 1923-March 27, 2020) Maria died peacefully at her home in Watertown on March 27, 2020 at the age of 96. She was the widow of Charles Brooker Allen, to whom she was married for 3 years. She was born on July 21, 1923 in Riverton, New Jersey, the only child of Henry LeRoy Randall of New Milford, cT and Elizabeth Troxell Randall of West Pitson, PA. She graduated from Westover School and Sarah Lawrence College and moved with her husband to Watertown in 1954. Maria’s family have been summer residents on Lake Waramaug in Warren since 1898, she loved the lake dearly and was very much involved in the effort to preserve its health and beauty. She is survived by her daughter, Heather Allen, her daughter-in-law Patricia Allen, grandson, Geoffrey Allen and wife Heidi, granddaughter Julia Allen Fields and husband Eric, six great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  Kevin Paul Egan (November 4, 1929-June 6, 2020) Kevin passed away on June 6, 2020, in Southbury, Ct after a brief battle with Covid-19. He was born in the Bronx on November 4, 1929, to Eugene and Leonie Egan. He attended Lycee Francais in New York and Brooklyn College before being drafted into the Army in 1951. He served in Texas and in Germany, rising to the rank of sergeant. Returning home, he and an Army buddy accepted jobs at the Harbor House Hotel in Nantucket for the summer. It was there that Keven met Amy McAvity, a college sophomore from Larchmont, Ny who had taken a summer job at the same hotel. According to Amy it was love at first sight. They were married in 1956. Amy was called to be rector of our church! She and Kevin enjoyed participating in the life of the parish and exploring the lakes and ponds of Northwestern Ct. Following her death in 2010, Kevin moved to Southbury. He is survived by son, Chris and wife Lorri, Kate Norris and husband Mike, and Justin and wife Patricia, grandchildren Sara, Connor and Grayson, brothers Antony and Brian and two great grandchildren.  Sharon Rafferty Pellegrini (December 26, 1944-June 20, 2020) Sharon was born in Portsmouth, NH and died at her home in Osprey, FL.She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Terry Pellegrini, her son Jeffrey and his wife Nancy Pellegrini and daughter Amy Barkan and her husband Peter. Sharon was lovingly known as Nonni to her four grandchildren, Seth, Lila, Benjamin and Abigail. Sharon was one of five children born to Denis and Eleanor Rafferty After graduating from Saint Joseph’s College in New Hampshire, Sharon’s first love was teaching. She was a first and second grade teacher in Philadelphia while her husband Terry was attending Villanova Law School. Sharon loved teaching and could connect with children (and adults) with patience and grace. Her greatest joy and love was her family. She was a fierce advocate for her children and committed her time as a stay at home mother to helping them pursue their dreams. Sharon was hilarious with a quick wit and often surprising one liners. She was also an outstanding competitor as she excelled in both golf and tennis competitions throughout her years. She was a 40+ year member of Lake Waramaug Country Club and enjoyed many winters skiing in Stratton Vermont with a cadre of great friends. She fought hard to maintain her health & well-being to enjoy time with family.

Free Foundation  Have you built your house on rock?

Or do you live a fantasy life where harm comes only to others-- The ones you see on your computer screen or across your living room wall on wide-screen TV?

You sit on your sofa and pray, “Dear Lord, Keep such tragedies far from my door.” Meanwhile your floor is sinking more and more each day.

There is one rock. It’s free but costs everything.

If you see your own need, you’ll pay. --Rita a. Simmonds

We give thanks to members past, present and future.

Cheers to our 256th year!  Thank you Lord for our many blessings! (UTO Boxes in Darragh Hall)
