Issue 3 – Term 1 – Week 5

Wednesday, 27 May 2020 Issue 7 – Term 2 – Week 5

Welcome Back To quote a 70s sitcom theme song – “Welcome Back. Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back”! It is so lovely to enter into this next stage of ‘normal’ and having all students back on site five days a week. There was certainly a great deal of joy in the playground in the morning – and perhaps a few sleepy nods from those who are going to take ‘a little time’ to adjust to brisk autumn mornings in school uniform...

Students are aware of the ongoing need for social distancing and hygiene so that we can continue to play our important role in keeping the Balranald community safe. A big thanks also to all families and community members who have followed our requests to limit movement into school & for following school gate “kiss & drop” practices. This is in line with all schools across NSW, and are in place during this next phase. We will let you know when these measures get lifted- but until then, we thank you for your understanding!

Secondary students will start the next BEAR (Balranald Engagement & Achievement Register) period from Week 5-9 of this term. This is the opportunity for all students to ‘dive in the deep end’ and make the most of all learning opportunities in every class. Feedback from secondary teachers will reflect these positive efforts being made. All students have the potential to build on their Term 1 BEAR scores.

The most obvious way of getting the school day off to a good start is to arrive in the morning with a FULLY CHARGED LAPTOP each & every day for Year 5-12. Don’t forget them! 😊😊

A great opportunity has been made available for Year 12 D&T students to have an intensive workshop week to spend time on their major work projects. This focused model of learning is an exceptional way of developing engagement with such a big task in an uninterrupted period of time. This was made possible with Mr John Singleton being able to join our ‘staff’ for Week 5. Welcome to Balranald for the week, John. We hope you have enjoyed working in our amazing workshop area.

We would also like to welcome on board Jess Renfrey, Dimity Cimino & Elli-Jane Brougham (who will be in our classrooms on regular days until the end of the year). Sue Murphy has also spent some casual days working in the classrooms in lower primary.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Glenda Redpath for the wonderful joy and energy that she has brought to her SLSO role at BCS. She is going to continue to be busy in her “out-of-school” job – but we are grateful for the lovely legacy she has left in the playground of primary and secondary areas at school. ALL usual lessons/classes will run as per "pre-COVID19 life". Normal release lessons; usual teachers on their classes; all special programs that were in place (e.g. MacqLit etc) are running as per usual. In addition to this, there will also be a number of new programs to further support student transition back to the classroom. Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher if you would like to discuss ways of supporting your children at home or at school.

And finally – THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR TAKING AN INCREDIBLY UNKNOWN SITUATION AND MAKING IT WORK FOR EVERY STUDENT AT BCS!

To all of the families who have embraced the time that students have been working from home and have such learnt so much more about what is happening in the classrooms.

To each member of staff who has prepared a perfect pack; delivered zingers on Zoom; tackled Tech like a true hero (and even 'paid forward' by teaching newly acquired tech skills to someone else); lovingly launched into Library supervision lessons; smiled their way through "sanitizer shortages"; cleaned a door handle. Over. And over. And OVER; or just see yourself as 'doing what you had to do' - my heartfelt thanks. You have all continued to SMASH anything that 2020 has thrown our way!

Year 12 Biology and Year 11 Chemistry The BCS Year 12 Biology class have been learning about cell replication and DNA synthesis. Students were able to artistically model the process of mitosis and meiosis using pipe cleaners and cardboard, identifying each component of the P.M.A.T phases. As part of the practical component of the course, students had the opportunity to model strands of DNA using a variety of lollies and toothpicks, ensuring that the nitrogenous bases were correctly matched and colour coded. Due to COVID-19 hygiene practices and the fact that Ms Hull is on a diet, we weren’t able to eat the models but we all learnt how much willpower we had…. In Year 11 Chemistry, Seth has been learning how to calculate empirical and molecular formulas by first obtaining reliable data from chemical reactions. These practical opportunities have allowed Seth to practice his hands-on and problem solving skills in the lab, experimenting with different pieces of equipment.
