As I celebrate my first full year as director, I appreciate more than ever the importance of our mission to cultivate informed voters and engaged citizens through research, education and outreach. Program Activity

UT Votes

UT Votes hit the ground running byquadrupling membership numbers attheir first meeting. UT Votes membersand partner organizations haveregistered over 3,130 students to votethis semester and are still outregistering voters daily. KassieBarroquillo, a graduate researchassistant for the Institute had the honorof introducing Texas Secretary of State, Carlos Cascos as he kicked­off thestate's fall voter education campaign. After Cascos spoke to the class ofnearly 500 UT underclassmen, UT Votes members registered 141 students tovote. To learn more or get involved visit our website.

Research Activity

Engaging News Project

The Engaging News Project (ENP) hasreleased a number of reports recently,including "10 Things We Learned byAnalyzing 9 Million New York TimesComments." Other topics covered in recentreports include clickbait headlines,online news platforms, and how journalistsfeel about comment sections. In theupcoming months, team members will bepresenting at the Online News Association conference and the PeoplePowered Publishing Conference, and will release research on the impact ofsolutions journalism, website design, and mobile notifications. ENP will alsobe hosting a Social Media Summit on Friday, Nov. 11, where digital newsleaders will share their experiences on using social media during the 2016election. The event is free and open to the public. Register here.

Jay JenningsPostdoctoral Fellow 

Dr. Jennings joins us from Philadelphia, PAwhere he received his PhD in PoliticalScience from Temple University. Jay studiesthe capacity of citizens to effectivelyparticipate in politics and his work draws onthe fields of political psychology, publicopinion and political communication. Hisdissertation and recently published articleinvestigates religion's role in shapingdemocratic citizens. You can read more

Katherine Haenschen Research Affiliate

Dr. Haenschen earned a PhD from the MoodyCollege of Communication at the Universityof Texas at Austin. Her research explores theintersection of digital media and politicalparticipation, with a focus on how onlineinteractions impact offline and online activity. Prior to earning her doctorate she was acampaign manager and political consultant inAustin, Texas. Her article "Social Pressure on Social Media: Using FacebookStatus Updates to Increase Voter Turnout" was recently published by the

Josh ScaccoFaculty Research Affiliate

Dr. Scacco earned his PhD from TheUniversity of Texas at Austin in 2014 and isan Assistant Professor of Media Theory &Politics in the Brian Lamb School ofCommunication and a Courtesy Facultymember in the Department of PoliticalScience at Purdue University. He also servesas a Faculty Research Associate with the

Engaging News Project. Broadly, he researches topics in politicalcommunication, media and politics, online news, and presidential address.   

Meredith GrowerGraduate Research AssistantSpeak Up! Speak Out!

Meredith is a Graduate Research Assistant forthe Speak Up! Speak Out! (SUSO) civiceducation program at the Institute. She willassist with the coordination and planning ofthe upcoming SUSO Civics Fair scheduledNovember 18. Meredith received her B.A. inPsychology from The University of Arizonaas is currently working towards her Masters of Science in Social Work with aconcentration in administration and policy practice at the University of Texasat Austin. 

Erin SmithGraduate Research AssistantLebermann Forum

Erin is a second­year graduate student at theLyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.Prior to moving to Austin, Erin lived in LosAngeles and served as assistant director of theCenter for Civic Education's We the PeoplePrograms. She oversaw a national networkdedicated to supporting active citizenship

through classroom learning, planned professional development institutes, andmanaged federal grants.
