means help is on the way; and where there is help there is hope. That’s why I like the sound of the siren”.

The sound of alarms should motivate and inspire us, not frighten us, as they indicate that people are mobilizing to assist us. Those sudden noises that do arouse us indicate that there is a genuine care and concern for the welfare of people in distress and or those exposed to danger. If we know that help is on the way, we can reaffirm our hope in the future. When there is hope and help, there must be a future.

For our chaplaincy, we provide that hope, even in end of life situations. We work with the souls for the wellbeing of individuals. May הקדוש ברוך הוא continue to guide us on our journeys amongst those in need.

Rabbi Yaacov [email protected]

Treasurer's ReportRabbi Maurice S. Kaprow, M.A., B.C.C., TreasurerDear Chevre,!

As our fiscal year draws to a close, I can report to you that we are prepared to complete the year near our budget projections. As originally predicted, we will be using some of our reserve funds to close the gap. (We are and will remain in a very solid fiscal position.)

Again, I must turn to you, our members, for your help. Dues bills will be sent out in July. Please pay your bills as promptly as you can. If you need to make a payment arrangement, please send me an email ([email protected]) with a good number and time for me to call you.

Please go to your agency and ask them to become non-profit supporters of NAJC for $150 per year. We will provide appropriate recognition to each non-profit supporter. In addition, we have a category of major supporters for those institutions or businesses who contribute $1000. They will get special recognition in our annual conference materials.

Please remember that NAJC is YOU. This year we improved our website to make it more useful and more user-friendly. We instituted a number of Y’mai Iyun around the country, some in conjunction with other groups, some by ourselves. For the coming year we are planning more and are constantly seeking new ways to be of service to you. Please let us know what we can do better for you.

Best wishes for a pleasant summer.

Kol tuv,

Rabbi Maurice S. [email protected]

Message from the President, continued.

The NAJC WebpageRabbi Leonard (Yehuda) Blank, MS, BCC

So why should you and everyone you know look, read (and “kvell” about ) the NAJC website. Of course, I would like to say because my article about the new site in the March 2011 is included, but there are more significant reasons, which I want to share with you.

With so much going on in the world today, how much more so is it important for us to stay connected so we can learn what is happening in the world of chaplaincy and each other..

Achdut – unity is so important. The Chag of Shavuot is a time of reflection and remembering how all of Klal Yisrael were united, receiving the Aseret Hadibrot and our Holy Torah, as one family. Helping each other and others, and there are many beautiful stories of how our chaplains have brought much pride not only to those of the Jewish faith, but to the world of chaplaincy. True, we do get together at our annual conference, but what about during the year?

Yes, you can Google chaplaincy sites, but where is the one place you can read about Jewish chaplains and then link to other important chaplaincy and relevant sites - the NAJC website! Matthew Halpern, our Website Administrator, has been posting y’mei iyun, seminars and conferences and adding content items such as Newsletters, http://www.najc.org/news-journals/, additional resources links, http://www.najc.org/resources/links, new job postings, http://www.najc.org/members/jobs/, updated all membership material, http://www.najc.org/join/apply/, and updated Code of Ethics document, http://www.najc.org/about/ethics/

Remember, you need to have an accepted password for the “members only”.For those who are seeking employment, there is one bit of information that might be asked at an

interview, and that is how do you keep up to date in your professional field.Well, the NAJC website is an important site for resources with articles, journals , and links to other

resources. Many who are used to the “old” or have never visited the NAJC website, are surprised to see how

visually pleasing, professionally put together, and how informative it is. From the Executive Board, Board, Executive Vice President Cecille Asekoff, and her administrative

staff, committee members, Dan Federman of Puffy Coat, Matthew Halpern and everyone who contributes to the website, it all seems so beautifully seamless.

We are growing, but we need your input. Please share with us any programs, events, professional articles and articles of interest. Of course, if you are able, please send in your donations so we can increase our functionality. You can now give your donations on line and can renew your membership and pay dues on line. For members - the “members only” has a lot to offer.

May the Chag of Shavuot help us keep the flame of our mesorah/devotion, achdut/unity, emunah/faith strong and bright, and may there be shalom.

If you have any comments or questions about the NAJC website, or would like to have something included, please contact Matthew Halpern, NAJC Website Administrator at [email protected].

Chevre,

I was invited by the CPSP as their guest to attend the CPSP Plenary in Virginia Beach, Va. There, I had the opportunity to address the group and bring greetings as president of NAJC.

This was a most positive experience and I want to share with you the accompanying letter that was distributed to all via the registration kits.

My thanks to our colleague, Jim Michaels, for making these arrangements.

Embracing RetirementDavid J. Zucker, Ph.D., BCC

Dozens of years ago, when the Beatles sang the verses, “...will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four” sixty-four seemed a long ways away. To my amazement, sixty-four came, and sixty-four went. Now, some five years later after that, the time has come for me to transition to the next phase of my life: retirement.

Consequently, back in February 2011, I gave my notice to the CEO of Shalom Park. At the end of June 2011 I shall fully retire from chaplaincy. I am fortunate in knowing good health and I look forward to spending more time with my family, traveling, and continuing to write and to publish.

The past close to twenty years in chaplaincy have been a continuing delight. I have been stretched and I have grown in many different directions. I have learned a great deal. An important part of that stretching, that growing and that learning, has been because of my close association with the NAJC.

I became Board Certified. I was privileged to attend many conferences from 1995 to 2010. I was honored with the task of chairing or co-chairing, along with Bonita Taylor, eight national annual conferences in a row, from 1999 through 2006. I also chaired the first international cognate chaplains’ conference in North America, held in Toronto in 2003. Furthermore, I had the honor of naming that conference: EPIC - Empowerment, Presence, Integrity, and Compassion.

I was privileged to serve on the NAJC Board under several presidents as an officer and a board member. I offered presentations for many years and I was delighted with your feedback. Most importantly, I had the joy of working with Cecille Asekoff and her staff, most lately, Gail Herman.

You are a wonderful hevre. You have been welcoming and caring. You have changed my life in so many positive ways. As I move now into retirement, I know I am a different and better person now than I was when I began this sacred journey. You have been a blessing in my life.

U.S. Senate Passes Resolution for Jewish Chaplains Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery May 27, 2011Reprinted with permission from JWB Jewish Chaplains Council

Just in time for Memorial Day, the U.S. Senate passed the necessary resolution to place a memorial to fallen Jewish chaplains in Arlington National Cemetery, next to existing memorials to Roman Catholic and Protestant chaplains. A similar resolution passed the House of Representatives earlier in the week. JWB Jewish Chaplains Council, a division of JCC Association, has led the effort to correct what was seen as a longstanding wrong. “We are immensely gratified that this sad oversight is about to be corrected,” said Rabbi Harold Robinson, director of JWB Jewish Chaplains Council. “We’re deeply grateful to Congressmen Anthony Weiner and Jeff Miller and Senators Charles Schumer, Richard Burr, and Patty Murray for their leadership on this issue. Finally, these fallen chaplains will be brought home to their comrades in ministry.” Robinson added, “As Memorial Day approaches, we are grateful to all military chaplains who serve our servicemen and women.”

N.Y. Representative Anthony Weiner and N.Y. Senator Charles Schumer introduced resolutions in the House of Representatives and the Senate to authorize the memorial. Florida Representative Miller and Washington Senator Murray are chairs of the veterans services committees in the House and Senate, respectively. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina is the ranking Republican on the Senate committee.

The next step is approval of the monument’s design by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts when the Commission meets in June.  After approximately six weeks for fabrication, the plaque will go on tour to different communities, giving people a chance to see it and learn more about the role of Jewish chaplains. JWB hopes to have the dedication in Arlington during the fall to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Jewish chaplaincy. The first Jewish chaplain was commissioned in 1862, in the midst of the Civil War.

The JFNA, Jewish War Veterans, and the Sons of the American Legion were among the many communal organizations that worked tirelessly to get the resolution passed. The project was initiated when Ken Kraetzer discovered that Jewish chaplains were not memorialized on Chaplains Hill in the same way as others. A member of Squadron 50 of the Sons of the American Legion, in Pelham, N.Y., Kraetzer was doing historical research on memorials in Rhode Island. He was familiar with the story of the USS Dorchester, which the American Legion focuses on annually in commemorations all over the country, and wondered why Rabbi Goode was not among those listed at Arlington. One of the transformational moments in American life was the heroic sacrifice of the four chaplains of the USS Dorchester, which was transporting 900 soldiers and civilian workers to the European front when it was sunk by German torpedoes off the coast of Greenland on February 3, 1943. Each of the four chaplains on board spontaneously gave his lifejacket to another soldier, and the chaplains perished together as they prayed and sang hymns to men in lifeboats and in the icy water. The chaplains represented three faith traditions—two Protestants, a Catholic, and a Jew—and their death marked the first time the term “Protestant, Catholic and Jew” was used to describe America. Three of the four are memorialized on Chaplains Hill, but neither Rabbi Alexander Goode nor any of the other rabbis who died in other active service situations are so remembered.
