N° 04 - Wednesday 02 st March 2011 Dead Weight On Monday evening, Yemane L. Demissie presented his recent film “Dead Weight” in the Diaspora section to the audience at the French Cultural Institute. The Ethiopian director digs into the aftermath of the 1970s Red Terror Campaign. I n Los Angeles, Hewan an independent and accomplished Ethiopian has to face once more her painful past after the death of her mother. The return of her father who had disappeared and the reappearance of her for- mer torturer will force her to heal her hidden injuries. The quality and precision of actress Mary “Aku” Inku's performance take us into the heart of the Ethiopian trauma, to the long and winding way to cure. The master tape mixes in an artistic manner traditional songs and jazz melodies from the baize set- tings of residential areas where the film is set. This wonderful and hard film smoothly touches on the taboo around the 1974's revolution. Building on real facts, the direc- tor has thus chosen Hewan's case to tackle the issue around the management of the memory of crimes committed by the mili- tary junta. His opinion? “Feeling, because they effectively illustrate the deep changes that followed this period unknown to youn- ger generations” “I really enjoyed the film. Te lights are won- derful! It marvelously delves into the issue of forgiveness and national reconciliation in post conflict countries”, said a festival fan after the screening at Petit Melies. S enegal has embarked on a significantproject known as the Pan African Film

and Audiovisual Center of Dakar. The pro-ject is still at its inception phase but isalready receiving a lot of interest from theAfrican Film and Audiovisual Sector.Initiated under the African Renaissance, thefuture Pan African Film and AudiovisualCenter will provide to African film makersready access to production equipment. Thiswill reduce production costs and better pro-mote African Cinema. The Center willcover an area of 9 hectares and will be ableto accommodate any type of shootingthrough state-of-the-art technology inclu-ding digital systems. Screening rooms,auditorium, digital photo and video lab,shooting stages with lodges, editing roomsand a training center are some of the facili-ties that will be made available to African

Film and Audiovisual professionals at theCenter. This project clearly intends to havean African coverage. Film makers in Africahave been involved in the project feasibilitystudy and design and so will they be inmanaging the center through a Public

Private Partnership (PPP). Once comple-ted, the facility will enable African filmmakers to have ready access to all produc-tion tools which will save them time andresources in going to Europe to perfect

their work. We could therefore be proud tosay that African images are entirely produ-ced in Africa, by Africans and for Africans.May the project soon become a reality!!!

A Senegalese Day at FESPACOFocus on the plans for a Pan African Film

and Audiovisual Center in DakarOn Monday 28th February 2011, the Embassy of Senegal in Burkina Faso joineditself to f i lm makers and other professionals of the movie industry to celebrate aSenegal day at FESPACO with a cocktai l party. The Senegalese day had three mainactions on schedule including tributes to departed fi lm makers, a professionalmeeting and a presentation of a futurist ic project supported by Senegal.

The French Institute has been hol-ding since February 18th an exhi-

bition of visual art by the French artist,Patrick Singh. Organized in the framework of the 22ndedition of FESPACO this Exhibitionshows about 400 paintings.The issues addressed include AfricanDiaspora throughout the world, humandiversity and the internal aspects of the

human being. The exhibition at theFrench Institute simply shows theBlack in all his Aspects and feelings.These are great works by a professionalwho has been practicing for 30 years.And among them are paintings, objectsdesigned as books, classical note books and paintings. To achieve his works, Patrick Singhuses recovery items such as canvas,

paper, cardboard, newspaper and metal.The few visitors we met confessed thatthey are impressed by the realism ofcharacters as well as colors, textures andmaterials.The exhibition will end up on 12thMarch.

Screenings of the day

On the occasion of the 22nd editionof FESPACO, several special pri-

zes will be presented to deserving cine-matographic works. The special prizegiven by LONAB (National Lottery ofBurkina Faso) known as “Prix del'Espoir “(Prize of Hope) is one of thosedistinctions. Made up of a trophy and an amount ofCFA 2,000,000 the prize aims at encou-raging the creativity of emerging talentsin the movie industry. The price of hopeis the fruit of a long term partnershipbetween LONAB and FESPACO. The trophy was carved at “CentreCulturel Barso” run by Burkinabe artistwith international recognition Jean-LucBAMBARA. It took him three months and severalstages to complete the work: Drawing,validation of the theme, wax moulding,

molding and bronze casting, finishingtouches with patina. LONAB solicitedhim for the 2009 special prize trophy. Given the quality of the trophy made forFESPACO 2009, he was called againfor this year's edition. The trophy represents a unified familywith dreams of greatness and success.The reference to cinema is quite obvioussince this is an everlasting world ofdreams, hopes and opportunities. On the evening of the awards ceremony,a film maker will be wielding this 5 KGbronze patina trophy. The artist's joy will be much moresignificant because his art will be pro-moting African cinema and that isexactly the magic with FESPACO: thealchemy of art.

D uring the FESPACO festival, docu-ments are translated from French

into English while presenters make surethat English and French speakers are onthe same pitch of understanding at scree-ning sessions. This is made possible by the sub com-mission of translators and interpreterswhich is supervised by Mr BahisimineYOUL, mandated to make sure that anynews item published in the FESPACONews is well edited and handled with pro-fessionalism.This sub commission works assiduouslyevery day and each article is handled by ateam of two translators and cross-checkedby the entire team at the end of the day.All these are handled in a very relax andenjoyable atmosphere. The team is not content with the size oftheir office space because they are alwaysdisturbed by visitors who troop in and outfor enquiries and other matters which are

not related to their department. Another impediment is that articles to betranslated do not come on time and this isdue to unforeseen circumstances.
