The Friendly Lion in Storytime Issue 59 is a myth from Ancient Rome. It is also known as ‘Androcles and the Lion’. It is about a runaway slave who befriends a wild lion.

Story Sequencing Sheet
There is a lion in the cave. At first, Androcles is afraid, but then he spots that the lion is injured and in pain.
His master decides to punish Androcles by making him fight a wild animal in a gladiator arena.
Androcles tells his story to the emperor. The emperor is so impressed he sets Androcles and the lion free.
Androcles removes a thorn from the lion’s paw and nurses the lion back to health.
The friendly lion nuzzles and licks Androcles. The crowd is shocked. The emperor is puzzled.
On the day of the fight, Androcles is scared, but then the guards open the cage and he sees the friendly lion.
Androcles is sleeping in a cave when he is woken by loud roaring. He is scared.
Androcles and the lion become friends. They share food and live in the cave together until Androcles is captured by slave-catchers.
A slave called Androcles escapes from his master and runs away to the forest.

In the middle of the night, a thunderous roar disturbed his dreams. Androcles was startled to find a great hulking lion stalking towards him. He had fallen asleep in a lion’s den! He leapt to his feet to look for a weapon, but the lion surprised him by slumping to the ground. It let out an agonised growl and licked its paw.
Androcles spotted a large thorn sticking out of the soft flesh below the lion’s claw. The lion whined and looked at Androcles sorrowfully.
