THE Cancer Council’s Relay for Life will return to Myrtleford next year after smashing its fundraising goal .

Almost 20 teams and 250 people took part in the event raising more than $40,000 already and with still four weeks of counting to come.

It was almost triple the amount raised in Bright last year.

Glenda Janas, one of the organising committee for the inaugural event, said it was both moving and uplifting.

“Overall we had 18 teams and the goal was $35,000 and we won’t know the final figure until all the money is in but we are well over that and hopeful even more comes in,” she said. “We started on Saturday afternoon initially with a lap of honour for survivors and carers.

“But I think it was the night ceremony that was the most moving – the full circuit of the track was lit with candles in paper bags carrying messages for those who have passed away and those on the journey.

MYRTLEFORD SHOWGROUNDS

The Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo is the second longest running Victorian rodeo and the first of the summer circuit. Myrtleford is regarded as having one of the most spectacular rodeo arenas in Australia. The Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach displays photos of the Myrtleford Rodeo and recognises its place in the history of rodeos in Australia.

This year’s program promises to be bigger and better than ever with Cowboys and Cowgirls from across the country competing for Australian Professional Rodeo Association championship points and the coveted Golden Spurs. This year will include: breakaway roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, bareback riding, bull riding, with dinner break entertainment by Yackandandah’s own Lachie Cossor, who recently returned from performances at Longreach’s Stockman’s Hall of Fame.

Big Screen Replays will again be available for you to see all the thrills and spill and show you again what it is really like to be thrown off a bull!

There is a strictly enforced no BYO alcohol or glass policy.

Patrons should note that dogs are NOT permitted in the controlled Rodeo viewing area because of possible litigation, i.e. past our entrance gate

Gates open at 11.00am for the lead up events with the main program running from 4.00pm to 11.00pm.

Ovens Valley Specialist Medical Transport Service The Specialist Medical Transport Service provides volunteer transport to the residents of the Ovens Valley from Harrietville to Everton, to specialist medical appointments which are located outside of the Alpine Shire. WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Any person from the Ovens Valley, who is unable to access public transport, taxis or private transport and who is experiencing transport disadvantage due to economic, geographic or disability status (including temporary disability). COST

Travellers Aid If you are heading to Wangaratta and need a place to relax., then come in and visit the Travellers Aid Access Service. This free service provides a friendly space to have a cuppa, heat your lunch and they can even provide personal care and meal assistance. There is also wheelchair and scooter recharge

HCLC book clubs are reasonably priced with a great selection of books. Home Schoolers Story Time Home schoolers with primary aged kids are invited to call into the library at 11.00 am on Fridays for a story and a craft session. It’s pretty informal, just call and let the library know you are interested.

JUSTICE of the PEACE SIGNING CENTRE A Justice of the Peace Signing Centre operates at Myrtleford Library every Tuesday afternoon from 1.00pm until 3.00 pm. This free community service has rostered JPs available to witness certified true copies, affidavits, statutory declarations and power of attorney documents. No need to book, just turn up. This is a free service supported by the Department of Justice and the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices.

On these days you will determine your care needs. If you have planned to leave your home early on extreme heat days please let your service provider know.

Is an in-home volunteering visiting program for pet owners requiring

assistance caring for their pet or for people without a pet who would enjoy a home visit by a volunteer and their

dog. We are currently looking for volunteers for this program.
