THE DESIGN CYCLEDesign Cycle : A four step process used to solve a problem.

I. Inquiring and AnalysingStudents will explain the problem, research and develop a design brief.

II. Developing IdeasStudents will understand the design specifications, brainstorm ideas, present the chosen design and develop a planning drawing.

III. Creating the SolutionStudents will construct a logical plan and create their project, documenting any changes.

IV. EvaluatingStudents will evaluate the success of their project and explain how it could be improved.

CI: CONSTRUCT A LOGICAL PLAN

1. Construct a plan for the creation of your product.

Make a table like the one below to construct a plan that explains step by step how you are going to create your product. You need to include tools (such as a computer, the software, a printer and scissors) and materials (such as images, fonts, cardboard and glue). You also need to think about the amount of time you need for each step. Remember your plan must be logical, clear and concise!Step Number

Task Tools Materials Time

1 Example: Insert the title

Example: computer, publisher

Example: Arial size 50pt, black colour

Example: 20 minutes

CII: DEMONSTRATE TECHNICAL SKILLS CIII: FOLLOW THE PLAN TO CREATE THE SOLUTION2. It’s time to create your product!

Write a process journal to show that you are following your plan and also to demonstrate your technical skills.

In each entry of your process journal you must include: The date A reflection of what your plan says you should be doing A screenshot or photo of the work you have done A reflection about the work you have done

CIV: EXPLAIN CHANGES MADE TO THE DESIGN

AND PLAN3. Explain the changes you made to the design and the plan.

Show your design and your product side by side and explain why you made changes to your design. List all of these changes!

Look at your original plan (1) and your process journal. Did you make any changes to your plan? List all of these changes. Why did you make them?

Achievement level Level descriptor

0 The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors below.

1–2

The student:i. demonstrates minimal technical skills when making

the solutionii. create the solution, which functions poorly and is

presented in an incomplete form

3–4

The student:i. lists the main steps in a plan that contains some

details, resulting in peers having difficulty following the plan to create the solution

ii. demonstrates satisfactory technical skills when making the solution

iii. creates the solution, which partially functions and is adequately presented

iv. states one change made to the chosen design or plan when making the solution

5–6

The student:i. lists the steps in a plan, which considers time and

resources, resulting in peers being able to follow the plan to create the solution

ii. demonstrates competent technical skills when making the solution

iii. creates the solution, which functions as intended and is presented appropriately

iv. states one change made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution

7–8

The student:i. outlines a plan, which considers the use of

resources and time, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution

ii. demonstrates excellent technical skills when making the solution

iii. follows the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended and is presented appropriately
