Wet driving conditions

Staying safe

Firstly and most importantly:

SLOW DOWN!• It takes much longer to stop or adjust in wet

weather

• The spray created by tires reduces your vision

• Rain often mixes with grime and oil on the road creating slick conditions perfect for skids

Driving at a slower pace allows more of the tyre's tread to make contact with the road, which leads to better traction.

Check your vehicle’s tyres before setting off

• Make sure your tyres aren’t flat

• Use a pressure gauge to ensure your tyres have the correct air pressure (which you will find in your vehicle owner’s manual)

• Check your tyre tread depth

Correctly inflated tyres with the proper tread depth will help prevent skids and aquaplaning

Be prepared to deal with a skid

Skids can happen even to the most cautious drivers. If your car does skid:

•Do not slam on the brakes.

•Do not pump the brakes if you have an anti-lock braking system (ABS).

•Instead, apply firm, steady pressure to the brakes and steer the car in the direction of the skid.

• your vision may be impaired

• if you have to hit the brakes hard, your tires will lock up

Keep a little more than two car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
