Within the Landscape/ the Landscape Within examines the work of twenty contemporary artists for whom landscape is a primary influence. “In this exhibition of drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, installation, and timebased media we see diverse expressions of landscape as both the natural world and a construct of our culture and the artists who draw from it.” 2010 SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO EXHIBITION Over forty graduating graphic design seniors will have their portfolios on display during this annual event. Portfolios will encompass areas such as corporate identity, packaging design, illustration, web page design and interactive media. Industry professionals will have an opportunity for a private preview before the exhibition opens to the public. Students will be able to network with prospective employers during the entire week-long exhibition. COLLIDER SERIES EXPLORES INTERACTIVE NEW MEDIA “Collider4: Spectacle,” an array of events presented by The University of Akron’s Myers School of Art, invites visitors to participate in, play with and ponder new media artworks. The events include exhibitions, lectures, workshops, receptions and Kinect Cube interactive artworks. Running March 19 through April 14, all “Spectacle” events are free and open to the public in three UA campus locations: the Myers School of Art and Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St.; Bierce Library, 302 East Buchtel Ave.; and the Honors College Complex, 180 South College St. Also free are receptions on March 20 and April 13 from 4:30 to 8 p.m FOLLOW @MYERSART Lo culluptatio. Named for a nationally respected art advocate and UA alumna, the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art is one of only a few named art schools in the entire country.
UA art alumni have been accepted into the finest graduate art schools in the country and have received prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships, Addys, and other notable awards.
The Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall showcases contemporary work by artists who are recognized regionally and nationally, as well as work by faculty and students. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council have funded many critically distinguished exhibitions at Emily Davis Gallery in recent years. The gallery also has originated multiple national traveling exhibitions including, in 2007, an exhibition of works by Yoko Ono and John Lennon.
The Artist-in-Residency Program at the Myers School of Art is among the best and most ambitious in the country. Renowned artists visit Folk Hall to share their diverse talents with students and the community.
Art classes were first offered on campus in 1872; art was designated as a department in 1919.
