Professional Focus and Activity

My teaching, research, and service generate from the three themes of collaboration, culture, and

critique. These themes in my work are founded upon the theory that humans construct, negotiate,

and contest meanings through their use of signs in everyday social interaction. Although the

meanings of signs are never fixed or given, cultural patterns of activity shape how we construct

valued identities, relationships, and knowledge. My scholarship has explored how the social

contexts/cultural practices of individualistic, achievement oriented, and knowledge/skill

transmission school activities construct literacy and learning practices with consequences that are

problematic in a world of multicultural and negotiated truth. Since I value literacy activity that

helps participants negotiate their experience within and across diverse local and global

communities, my scholarship explores how curricular activities with print and digital tools can

support the collaborative generation, negotiation, and critique of representations of the self,

others, and the world. My service arises in my commitment to one's home, as well as

professional communities, seeking ways to heighten collaboration and communication, to create

the belonging necessary for beneficial critique and subsequent transformation of the self and

one’s community. I believe that my actions help students, colleagues, and neighbors understand

our language and pedagogy as socially constructed activity, driven by value choices,

communicated through the metaphors we negotiate in our social interactions, dialectically shaped

by our historical-cultural contexts, and productive of our future cognitive and cultural identity

possibilities.

New programs and courses developed

Ethnographic Approaches to Educational Inquiry is a doctoral level course which provides an

introductory experience to the philosophical and methodological issues in conducting qualitative

research from various interpretive perspectives. I developed this course in 1990 as a special

topic, then worked with a departmental team of faculty to transform it into the permanent CI 502

Qualitative Research course and the CI 503 Qualitative Data Analysis courses in 1996.

Ethnic Cultures: Fiction and Fact was a graduate special topics course that I developed in

collaboration with Murry Nelson in social studies education. This course provides an experience

reading novels written by various ethnic authors and exploring the self and the other in responses

to the texts. We have co-taught this course twice and I have taught it once.

Teacher as Researcher is a graduate special topics course that I taught in 1994. In 199?, a

Page 40: Myers CV 2-09 - Welcome to the Penn State College of Education

Myers Vita Page 40

committee of department faculty developed it as CI 501 Classroom Inquiry as an every semester

research offering for Master's students. This course teaches the process of engaging in the

simultaneous actions of teaching, data collection, and analysis, for publication/presentation in

forums for teacher classroom inquiry.

Adolescent Literature and Literacy (LL ED 520) is a graduate course that I designed to explore

literature for adolescents and issues involved in its pedagogical experience. This course is

offered each Fall semester.

Secondary School Language, Literature, and Literacy (LL ED 512) is a graduate course that I

designed to explore the English curriculum and pedagogical experience in junior high and high

school. This course is offered each Spring semester.

The Secondary Education Major Certification option of English and Communications was

redesigned in 1993 and again in 1999 through my leadership and collaboration with Ladi Semali

and faculty in the departments of English, Comparative Literature, Theater, Speech

Communications, Linguistics, Instructional Systems, the School of Communications and College

of Arts & Architecture. By combining the separate certification programs into one program we

developed a media literacy core in addition to a more culturally diverse literature and language

core to improve the understanding of secondary teachers of the mutlimedia-multicultural society

in which we live.

Integrating LLED 412 and CI 495C. The pre-student teaching experience (C I 495C) was

redesigned to integrate the field experience with the on-campus secondary English methods

course (LL ED 412). This integrated offering was taught with the help of doctoral students in

Language and Literacy specializing in English education. In this new design, the supervision of

students in the field was done by myself and the doctoral students. This revision improved the

preparation of students by providing new opportunities to design and teach a unit, conduct a

small teacher as researcher project in a collaborative and supportive context, and have a tenure-

line faculty from the department of Curriculum and Instruction in the public school on a regular

basis to work with cooperating teachers for the first time in years. In the development and

conducting of the course over the first year (1993-94), I spent over 300 hours of time in school

English classrooms working with students and teachers. Until 2000, I arranged the field

placement of English education students for this experience. In 1996-7, I consulted with the

Science education faculty to redesign their 412 block in a similar manner. In 2002-4 the entire

secondary education faculty initiated a revision of the 412 block of courses to more fully

integrate all the disciplinary on-campus experiences with the field experience in ways very

similar to this 1993-2000 English education integration. The increased relationship with public

schools generated collaborative projects and, for all involved, a better understanding of the issues

connecting theory and practice in teacher education.

The State College Area School District-Penn State University Secondary English Professional

Development School. The PDS has most recently been recognized at the Holmes Partnership

conference as the 2004 Nancy Zimpher/Ken Howey Award for Best Partnership. I collaborated

with faculty Peter Rubba and Nancy Dana, and school district personnel from 1996 to 1998 to

develop and initiate a Professional Development Collaboration in the 1998-99 school year at the

elementary and secondary English levels. The following activities highlight some of the

activities that support this initiative that brings together the university missions of teaching,

research, and service:

1) Co-taught a full year of ninth grade English 1995-96 with Josehphine Pirrone in which

we integrated students from on-campus methods courses and implemented innovative

classroom practices.

2) Developed a new field experience during the SECED 411 semester in conjunction with

collaboration with Josephine Pirrone and the Goals 2000 Professional Development

School Initiative. The piloting of this field experience as an entirely on-school-site

experience during the May 1996 intersession supported the formulation of a year-long

internship plan for site-based English teacher education within a professional

development collaboration between the university and the State College Area School

District.

3) Piloted a group of four M.Ed. students in linked placements during Fall 1996-Spring

1997 semesters as a precursor to a year-long internship experience.

4) Met with a committee of English teachers at State College High School over the 1996-98

school years to develop a structure for a Professional Development collaboration in the

form of a year-long internship.

5) Implementation of the internship pilot in 1998-99 in which four secondary education

majors seeking English/communications certification worked in the State College Area

School District with a team of 5 mentor teachers for the entire school year. University

methods courses were accomplished with mentor teacher participation as teacher inquiry

projects contextualized by the needs of students and the development of the school

curriculum in particular for ninth grade students. Co-teaching activity, the involvement

of four doctoral students as co-teachers and co-inquirers, and weekly seminars for

reflection and response to relevant readings structured the collaboration.

6) The PDS implementation in year two, 1999-2000, matched 5 interns and 11 mentor

English teachers and developed a new structure for mentor teacher involvement in the

Professional Development School.

7) Participated in the development of a new school district initiative in 1999-2000 called the

Collaborative Teaching Initiative (CTI). The CTI program is an inclusion initiative that

supports two teachers with a diverse group of students, two thirds of which are identified

with special education or reading needs. CTI has grown from 13 classrooms in the first

year to 47 classes across grades 9-12 in 2004-05.

8) Institutionalized the secondary English PDS program at the high school by going to a full

cohort size of 13-15 English interns per year since the 2000-01 school year

9) Provided leadership to develop a middle school specific Professional Development

Collaboration by involving department colleagues in Science, Social Studies, Math,

World Languages, and Educational Leadership in a collaboration with State College and

Bellefonte middle schools. The collaboration involves a weekly graduate course and the

placing of teacher education candidates across the Fall and Spring semesters in a linked

student teaching experience.
