Improving patients’ lives through innovation
COULD BE YOUR COPD SOLUTION
INTEGRATED RESEARCH & CLINICAL SOLUTION
myCOPD is a web based self-management solution for patients suffering from COPD. The
solution equips them with the information and skills necessary to better manage their
symptoms, in order to live a healthier lifestyle. It consists of several key features such as
inhaler technique videos, a medication diary and symptom alerts as well as essential
information about COPD. The system allows hospitals, community providers and researchers
to manage their COPD population through sophisticated dashboards and individual patient
reports.

BACKGROUND
There are currently almost 1 million patients diagnosed with COPD in the UK. The latest guidance for COPD from the National Institute for Clinical Excel-lence (NICE) has patient self-management at its heart, but there are currently no web-based interac-tive solutions on the UK market that enable fulfilment of this ambition. It has been estimated by the Depart-ment of Health that implementation of self-management plans will save the NHS £235 million in the next ten years.
Patients with COPD are often pre-scribed a complex combination of inhaled medication in a variety of devices. These devices and drugs differ enormously in their delivery and periodicity. This complexity leads to poor compliance and wasteful pre-scribing and it is estimated that there is currently only 10% compliance in this pa-tient population.
myCOPD is a system that can be accessed by patients, practice nurses, community pharmacists and doctors to facilitate the efficient management of medicine for pa-tients with COPD.
The solution is also a great tool for the management of COPD research patient co-horts and provides a new way of delivering phase IV studies to this population.
Self-management and other literature is individualised through an easily accessible web-based system that populates documents automatically according to national guidelines. The solution will also recognise incompatible inhaler combinations and treatments that are not currently recommended by the NICE COPD guidelines.

allows access to a bite-size PR program.
COPD ASSESSMENT TEST (CAT) SCORE
ALERTS
COPD is having on their well-
being and daily life.
The CAT can be completed by
patients before a meeting
with you, ensuring their
scores are ready to discuss.
The CAT should be taken at
regular intervals - about once
every 3-6 months. This way,
the test will provide valuable
insight into how your pa-
tient’s health changes over
time.

Patients report their symptoms daily and this is then
sent to a contact of their choice.
These alerts can also inform organisations via an inte-
grated dashboard.
Patients can send a simple message to their nurse or
other healthcare provider in a secure manner.
As part of the patient symptom feedback we have developed a simple widget which calcu-
lates their CAT score. This questionnaire will help you and your patients measure the impact
The CAT score also allows you to assess how likely the patient is to exacerbate. This will aid
you, and other healthcare professionals, to effectively plan services.

The symptom alerts can also be delivered by smartphone applications on the android
platform, providing a convenient interface for your patients.
These apps provide a number of unique
solutions:

tionnaires

INHALER DIARY & VIDEOS
Inhaler technique and compliance with medications is an important part of self-management
and the stable management of COPD. The solution will provide your patients with videos
demonstrating proper use of their inhalers and a simple inhaler diary to aid compliance.

MY CLINICAL DASHBOARD

Organisations can view a dashboard, implemented to aid effective patient management and
to keep you up-to-date with your patient’s symptoms, alerts and exacerbation.

The dashboard also provides information about the last 14 days of your patient’s symptoms,
alerts and messages.
For researchers the dashboard and
individual patient review can be
adapted to measure your patient’s
activity; SGRQ*; (C) SQRG*; exact–
PRO* and sputum colour.

SELF MANAGEMENT PLAN
Patients can print
their
Self-Management
Plan
The registration process populates the self-management plan. The plan provides patient’s with
advice on what action to take if their symptoms worsen. It also holds information about the
patient’s GP and their current medication.

BITESIZE PULMONARY REHABILITATION
Pulmonary rehabilitation is seen as one of the cornerstones of COPD management.
Many patients report improvements in endurance and symptoms following a course of
pulmonary rehabilitation.
These bitesize videos provide insight into pulmonary rehabilitation and encourages
patients to seek referral to a course, or maintenance class. It also serves as a reminder
for those who have already completed a course and wish to continue their exercises in
the comfort of their own home.

BREATHLESSNESS AND ANXIETY
In an interactive video,
Dr Laura Flower (Clinical
Psychologist) demon-
strates deep muscle
relaxation techniques to
help patients cope with
the anxieties associated
with having COPD.
Anxiety associated breathlessness is a major cause for admission to hospital in COPD patients.
Equipping patients with the necessary skills to deal with this may help to reduce the burden on
the NHS and enable patients to manage their anxiety.
OXYGEN ALERT CARD
Patients will be able to
print out an Oxygen Alert
Card from the myCOPD
Solution or purchase a
plastic card
Some COPD patients can become sensitive to medium and high flows of oxygen. It is
important that if oxygen is needed, it is administered in a controlled way. The card will alert
medical teams and advises them on the correct flow rates to maintain a patient’s oxygen
saturations during times of emergency.

MYCOPD PATIENT EDUCATION
Patients are able to access more information on COPD, which provides them with a better
idea on how to self-manage. Some examples of these pages are shown below.
