MYANMAR SAGAING FAULT

17
SAGAING FAULT Sagaing Fault is a major fault in Myanmar, a continental transform fault between the Indian plate and Sunda Plate that connects spreading centers in the Andaman Sea and the continental convergence zone along the Himalayan front. It passes through populated cities of Mandalay, Yamethin, Pyinmana, the capital Naypyidaw, Toungoo and Pegu before dropping off into the Gulf of Martaban, over 1200 kilometers.Global Positioning System campaigns revealed a right-lateral slip rate of 18 mm/yr.Different segments of the fault ruptured in May-1930, Dec-1930, 1931 and 1946.[4] The fault ruptured in 1930, causing a Magnitude 7.3 quake and likely a local tsunami at Bago, causing over 500 deaths.

Earthquake Risk of Major Cities along The Sagaing Fault

Cause of 1930 Pegu Earthquake 50 people died in Yangon/At that time only 100000 population in Yangon.Now20 time extension area and population become 5 million. City expension to east along side near Sagaing fault.

The Bago earthquake on May 5, 1930 may have triggered the 1930 Pyu earthquake. The distribution of the intensities of the both earthquakes suggests that at least a 50-km long section of the Sagaing Fault between the two events of 1930 did not rupture during either of these two earthquakes.
