Daybreak in Myanmar Geoffrey Hiller When did you decide to write about Burma ?My first trip was in 1987. During that time foreign tourists were

only allowed to stay for seveen days. How long it takes to finish it at all?Five separate trips and 80,000 photographs, over a year to edit

and produce the book. Where do your ideas come from?My ideas come from background reading of history and novels,

listening to Burmese music but most importantly just being in the place where I make photographs. Its important to think before and after you make a photograph but never while you are in the process of photographing.

I felt compelled to communicate both the beauty and harhness of what I witnessed in 2000. That was during the time I made the web documentary Grace Under Pressure. It . The Burmese people impressed me with their kindness and sense of humor and I tried to show this beauty in my photographs. What was the hardest

thing about writing " Daybreak in Myanmar" ?

Again in 2000. The atmo-sphere was very tense at times. I was lucky to leave the country with 90 rolls of exposed film. Other photographers were not so fortunate. I have read that you have

been to Burma for 5 times since 1987. Do you feel you got different experinces for each time? Can you share your experiences in Burma with us?

Each experience was differ-ent. When I returned in 2011 I taught classes to photogra-phers and photo-journalists at the American Center In Yan-gon. In May 2011 you could still not display photos of The Lady (ASSK) openly on the street . The taxi drivers would whisper and asked me what I thought of her. But less then six months later that completely changed. There were tee-shirts and posters of her everywhere. You could even openly visit the offices of the NLD (National League for De-mocracy). In Jan 2012 I felt a tremendous sense of optimism and change in the country. Which places did you travell in Burma and which are your

favourites? What are your favourite Burmese food?Pathein, Mawlamyine, Pyay and Taungoo. I love Hpa- An because

of the amazing landscape surrounding the city. You can also feel some of the Karen culture there. My favorite Burmese food is Mohinga. How is your feeling if travelling in Burma is different from

other Asian countries for you?Up until a few years ago, Myanamr has remained isolated. I

would never want to romanticize that isolation, but on the other hand there was a sense of harmony that I felt from people I met.

Things are changing very quickly in Myanmar. I felt that during most my last visit in 2013. I hope that Myanmar will learn lessons from other countries in SE Asia such as Thailand and not make the same mistakes . How do you think about nowadays Burmese photography field? That's a good question. When I was teaching Burmese photog-

raphers at the American Center in Yangon in 2011 they used to joke that "We do not point and shoot, but have to point and run."

In case you do not under-stand the expression "point and shoot" is a kind of automatic small camera that people use to take photos quickly.

With the rise and democrati-zation of technology Burmese photographers have been able to adapt very quickly to the photography market place. Even without much experience some use social media to further their careers. Many are talented and are working for major news organizations such as Reuters and Getty. What kind of camera and

I love the old part of Yangon. I would wake very early every morning and set out to discover hidden parts of the city. I love the old neighborhoods. After a couple of hours photographing, it a pleasure to sit down in a traditional Bumesse tea house for my morning breakfast.

During the winter time (No-vember to Feb) the light in Myanmar has a very unique and special quality. Its golden and that was part of the reason why we designed the book the way that we did.

now? To keep myself grounded Im currently re- reading A Path With Heart by Jack Kornfield. He is an American Buddhist teacher who studied in Myanmar over 30 years ago. How do you think political

changes in Burma? And the future of Burma?

Its very difficult to say. Be-cause of ethic tensions all of the progress that has been made in the past few years can be negated. During 2012 and 2013 when I was last there I was very impressed the way that the Burmese in general were cool and calm, in comparison for example to what we see on the news about the Arab Spring countries. Do you have anything

specific that you want to say to your readers?

I hope that this book will reach the expat Burmese com-munity here in the United States and give them a sense of pride in their homeland.

For westerners who have visited Myanmar I hope that it will bring back fond memories.

And for those who have yet to experience Myanmar I hope that the photographs will inspire them to consider visiting some day. If they do I would suggest going sooner then later.

Hello~ my name is Clementine. I am of biracial heritage, my father being Australian and

my mother being Burmese. My mother is a retired flight attendant and my father is a pilot.

I was born in Chiang Mai, Thailand on a Sunday in June 1999. At the age of 2, I stumbled into my first daycare in Bilbao, Spain where my dad worked as a contract pilot. At 4 years old, we moved to Burma and I was enrolled into a kindergarten called Twinkle Tots in Yangon. When I turned 5, I was enrolled in an international school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam until the age of 11.

As you can tell, it was where I spent the majority of my childhood more or less. Our next stop was Gold Coast, Australia. We relocated in 2010 and we lived there for almost 4 years. I feel my time in Australia has shaped me into the person I am now compared to other countries. This could be because, our teenage years are most vulner-able to change, so even though the time spent there was short, I felt like that was where I really grew up. And now here I am, returning to Yangon, Burma. I am studying at an international school, the subject I am most fond of is Myanmar Studies. I never had the opportunity to fluently speak, read or write Burmese so I am grateful that I have now been given the chance. I believe I will be here for a time while my father is improving his health. I have a deep passion for Japan; especially its history and culture. I find the Japanese language very graceful and beautiful to listen to. Ive only ever met two Japanese people in my life but they were both very lovely. Sadly, I have never personally travelled there but Id really love to visit Japan one day! Also, the food is really delicious! I love salmon sashimi & miso soup the most~

Another fact about me is that Ive had an interest in art ever since I was young. Ive always loved drawing & paint-ing but gradually developed an interest in makeup, film & Japanese animation as well.

Music most definitely influences a large part of my life. I like to listen to anything thats catchy but if I had to pick a few genres; I like R&B, PBR&B (a more contemporary genre of R&B), techno, pop & rap.

Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Frank Ocean, Drake & Kanye West are my favorite artists ^^.

Because of my many different passions, I find it hard to decide on just one profession so I will most likely have more than one occupation in the future.
