Yoko-Pon’s uniform is the result of a transformation to allow him to become a CFAY Sailor. The “Yoko” in his name comes from the City of Yokosuka, where CFAY is located, and the “pon” means “joyous.” Yoko-Pon represents the Navy while reflecting Japanese tradition and folklore.

The idea behind Yoko-Pon comes from a melding of Navy values and Japanese folklore. Tanukis, or Japanese raccoon/dogs, are typically found throughout Japan, and are regarded as fun-loving, friendly, and sometimes mischievous creatures. A tanuki yokai, or creature from Japanese folklore, can have the ability to shapeshift, and often times, the more intelligent tanukis transform to fill roles and jobs of their human counterparts.

In the near future, Yoko-Pon will start to make appearances at base events and community gatherings, as health conditions allow. So the next time you ride the shuttle or attend a base or community event, keep your eyes peeled for Yoko-Pon. You never know where he might pop up next to represent CFAY.

Yoko-Pon made his first appearance to commemorate the re-launching of the CFAY Yoko-Pon shuttle service. Named after the mascot, the shuttle services busses transport hundreds of people each day across CFAY and are adorned with a cartoon depiction of Yoko-Pon on the sides of the busses.
