I.C.E. COMMENT

NEWS AND NOTICES

COMMENT: The traffic going out of Womble Gate is a mess. Every day several peoplehold up traffic because they want to proceed straight toward Route 16instead of turning left, which allows traffic to flow. It’s not just a fewhere and there; it is about every third to fifth car. There used to be a gateguard out there, during the busy hours, directing

traffic out and to theleft. I haven’t seen this in about three or four years. Here is one solution: putup a sign stating “left turn only between the hours of 1530-1800.” If people really want to leave the base and get onto Route 16, they should use the main gate. It’s probably faster, too.

RESPONSE: Thank you for your comment. FLEACT Yokosuka does not retain jurisdiction outside the boundaries of the installation. Base Security cannot regulate traffic flow or install signage to direct the flow of traffic off the installation. Another issue with outbound traffic flow is the traffic lights on Route 16. Traffic lights outside the installation belong to the City of

Yokosuka; therefore, the installation cannot control the traffic congestion these traffic lights cause. Base Security does its best to control and ensure that outbound traffic flows smoothly. It also gives consideration to pedestrians using the crosswalk to ensure they remain safe and thatthe crosswalk is not further impeding outbound traffic.
