EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

Best time to tap

One of the best times to tap on any issue is in the

middle of the night. You may notice that tapping

works faster when you’re half asleep. It may be because

your conscious mind isn’t posing as many barriers, so

the message reaches the subconscious more easily. So

if you find yourself awake from a nightmare or just

because of sleeplessness, it might help to tap on some

hot issues at that time.

The second best time to tap is before going to bed at

night. Why? Two reasons:

1. Tapping before turning in for the night calms

and sedates your body and mind, so you get a

good night’s sleep.

2. As you try to fall asleep, you are vulnerable to

worries and stresses of the day swooping

down on you. That makes it a good time to

start tapping on those worries, so you go to

bed with a clear head. Nightly tapping is a

great ritual to incorporate in your bedtime

routine.

But the best time to tap is in the heat of the moment.

That is when your emotions are all over the place and

you are strongly tuned into the problem. Tapping right

when you start to feel upset works fast because you do

not need to recall or dig out the negative feelings you

want to clear. What you are feeling in the moment is

what you need to clear out.

How to start out tapping

The first thing I suggest is to tap on exactly how you

feel right now before starting to tap on the specifics of

a problem. Very often, the feeling is of overwhelm or

resistance.

Examples of overwhelm and resistance - I’m never

going to get over this / I just don’t want to release this

anger / this issue is just too emotional for me to tap on

etc.

Tap 1-2 rounds on that before going into the nitty-

gritty of the issue.

Examples of specifics – They said such hurtful words / I

can’t get that sound of the crash out of my mind.

This sounds simple, but we often get so overwhelmed

that we forget to first calm ourselves down enough to

think clearly about what it is that we want to clear out.

This important practice of first tapping on how you feel

right now will clear the fog and overwhelm that make

an issue look like a mammoth.

Wait a second, or more

After a round of tapping, just wait for a few seconds

and watch what rises up. This is important because all

too often we get tempted to keep going with our

tapping without leaving enough time for the dust to

settle in between rounds.

Page 5: My Top EFT Tapping Secrets

4

EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

After a round of tapping, it may take a few seconds

until the effects of tapping become known to your

conscious mind. A little wait also creates a good

partition between rounds and brings clarity.

This little wait between rounds will bring to your

attention the next aspect of the problem to tap on. That

is very useful when you are tapping on complex issues.

When issues are too big to handle

This is an important tip that will help you clear major

issues on your own without getting overwhelmed or

losing track.

Even if looks like there will be tons of tapping needed,

it may not be so. You do not need to tap on every

event or every word spoken.

Only tap on those aspects that rise up at the end of a

tapping round or during one. It is in that Daisy Chain

format that your mind has sorted the information

about this matter. So that forms a logical step-by-step

process for you.

With an issue where there have been tons of painful

moments, it is easy to get distracted during a tapping

round. Just as soon as you start tapping on one aspect,

you may be reminded of other things. This is lethal.

Before each round, decide on what exactly you are

going to tap on.

Page 6: My Top EFT Tapping Secrets

5

EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

As you are tapping, thoughts about other related

aspects will come to mind. Do finish tapping on what

you started with. And then wait and watch if the related

aspect that rose up during this round is still high in

intensity. And then tap on that aspect if needed.

When tapping isn’t working

Tapping helps to clear energy blockages that are

created by holding on to negative emotions. Often

tapping clears issues within minutes. Sometimes it

happens that you spend a lot of time tapping, but you

are not satisfied with the results. In such cases, it is

possible that the body’s energies are not flowing in the

right direction and tapping isn’t taking root.

Donna Eden, a master and pioneer of Energy Medicine

suggests unscrambling the energies before you start

tapping. She suggests a few simple energy exercises to

get your energy flowing in the right direction. Doing

these exercises has brought new life to my own tapping

practice.

Donna Eden’s energy exercises:

EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

When tapping is working

If you experience yawning, sighing, deep breaths, tears

or some coughing during tapping, it is okay. Although

these signs are not necessary for successful tapping,

they seem to indicate that you are making progress and

that the energy is shifting.

Here is my list of 8 major factors that indicate you are

making progress: http://tap-easy.com/4751/eft-tapping-

issue-clear-signs/

Out of this list, there are 3 strong indicators to show

your tapping is working:

a. This one involves recalling the details of an event or a

bothersome issue as if you were describing it to a

friend. If an issue is resolved, you may notice that you

are not even able to concentrate on describing the

event without getting distracted.

Your attention keeps slipping from the thoughts of that

event to things in your environment. It is as if you have

disconnected yourself from that event by discharging

all the pain and negativity through tapping. You feel

bored talking about the issue.

b. If you start to think that the problem was not a big deal

in the first place, you’ve definitely cleared it! That is

because the changes with tapping happen at such a

deep level that our thoughts about that issue change,

often completely and ending with a positive bent.

c. The imagery that you see in your mind when you think

of an issue may change to a more positive or

compassionate one. If before tapping you thought of a

Page 8: My Top EFT Tapping Secrets

7

EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

childhood incident and all you could see in your mind’s

eye was the image of you falling off a bicycle, it may

now change to the memory of how your father gently

picked you up and you were fine.

This memory of your father would be the image of what

really happened, not an illusion. It is just that the mind

has learned to focus on a positive aspect of the

incident. So when you look back at that childhood

incident, you feel safe and cared for instead of shocked

and hurt.

Break it up

The idea of EFT is to focus on how you feel when you

are in a certain situation. Say someone at work said

something that upset you. So when you are tapping,

just think back to that incident, put yourself there and

actually feel how you felt when those words were

spoken.

Did you feel like you were tightening up as you were

listening to that person? Did you feel crestfallen as that

person went on with their off-handed remarks? Play

that incident as a movie in your mind as you tap.

EFT clears feelings. So once you no longer feel bad

about that incident, any negative thoughts

automatically stop forming. You start feeling like it was

no big deal after all and that you're really okay. That

sort of a calm and casual attitude is exactly what helps

one deal with stress.

Being vocal helps

Recent research at UCLA has shown that verbalizing

how you feel makes you feel better than just keeping it

all within. So calling an angry face an angry face makes

us feel better than just looking at an angry face.

Going by that, it makes sense to actually say out how

you feel as you are tapping on an issue. How you do

that is by way of describing the incident as if you were

talking to a friend about it.

If you are only mulling the incident in your mind, it can

feel like one big blob of negative feelings and at any

time you don’t have a handle on the exact emotion you

are trying to neutralize. So you end up spending a ton

of time with little progress.

Make a short phrase for each round such as "so upset

about losing the match" and say it out as you are

tapping. Both the reminder phrase and the act of

saying it out will help you to maintain your focus.

Keeping this in mind, I have created a process called

Easy as Pie, for ease of locking in on emotions to be

targeted through tapping in any given situation. My

motto is – if you can name it, you can tame it. The Easy

as Pie process helps you name your emotions, so you

can tame them with tapping.

The Easy as Pie process is explained with examples

here:

http://tap-easy.com/5077/easy-as-pie-method-eft-tapping/ .

Why not give it a whirl and see if this process resonates

with you?

Being specific cuts through problems

It helps to get as specific as possible. The right

wording can help you access your feelings better. For

example, saying “this fear of driving…” may not be as

effective as saying “I feel like I freeze up in fear as a

huge truck passes by my car” or “what if I mistakenly

press the gas / accelerator instead of the brake while

driving?”

Honesty pays

One of the most important factors behind effective

tapping is honesty. It sometimes needs courage to

accept how you feel about certain things. But trying to

cover up emotions because they make you feel

uncomfortable will cause tapping to simply skim the

surface instead of rooting out the problem.

If you think you may be in denial about something, try

a couple rounds of tapping like this: “even though I

don’t want to admit my true feelings about this issue, I’m

okay” or “even though I’m resistant to admitting how I

really feel about this issue, what if I gave myself an

honest chance for once”? And then tap on the real

problem.

If you don’t shy away from honesty, you’ll see great

results from even a little bit of tapping.

Gamut, what?

This next tip is for issues that have a high emotional

intensity, such as a lot of fear, worry etc. If even after a

lot of tapping, your emotional intensity feels very high,

it is time to use the gamut point.

In the good old days of yore, EFT consisted of a few

more points than the 8 currently used. The gamut point

was part of the longer form of EFT and is not used

much anymore. The gamut point is a very powerful

tapping point that calms your fight or flight response.

This point is located in the fleshy area at the back of

your hand, between your ring and little fingers. Tap on

this area, while focusing on your feelings, especially

fearful ones.

Out of all the EFT points, you may find that one or more

points are more effective in shifting your energy, almost

always, or for any given issue. You can know this if you

find yourself sighing deeper or yawning more while

tapping on certain points. Tapping longer on that point

will help make progress faster.

Tapping Amnesia

Because negativity clears up at a deeper level when you

use EFT, you may feel so much lighter afterwards that

you may not believe how much an issue used to bother

you and what big shifts tapping has created.

Since your thoughts about that problem have changed

and that problem no longer looks like the sword

hanging over your head that it once used to, it is easy

to downplay the role of tapping.

This may keep you from using tapping the next time

something bothers you since you won’t think tapping

as being very powerful. Often, the changes that

happen as a result of tapping can seem so natural that

you think nothing of them. It has happened with me

many times.

Negativity is good

While tapping on an issue, focus on negativity as

much as you can. This goes against the conventional

wisdom of focusing on the positive. But EFT works by

dissolving negative emotions as you tap.

The idea of EFT is to dissolve negativity by focusing on

the negative feelings during tapping. So it is perfectly

okay to acknowledge all the negative emotions and use

rants or even swear words (!) that come to your mind

while tapping.

Doing the first few rounds with a negative focus is very

useful. Tapping neutralizes the negativity, so the mind

spontaneously veers towards the positive. Even if you

Page 13: My Top EFT Tapping Secrets

12

EFT tapping secrets you ought to know

start out by tapping on a positive affirmation, say, “I’m

going to have a great day today”, do acknowledge any

negative tail-enders or “but what if…” kind of thoughts

and tap them away.

After a few rounds focusing on the negative, it is a

good idea to tap in some positive statements. But you

don't have to bring in the positive forcefully. Positive

emotions start to surface spontaneously once enough

rounds of EFT are done to dissolve negativity.

You no longer feel the anger or stress or fear so

intensely, so you find that suddenly your good sense is

thinking up of the positives in that situation. So then

doing a couple rounds acknowledging the positive is a

good idea, to seal it all in.

How many taps per point?

It is said that you should tap approximately 7 times on

each point. It is perfectly okay if you tap more than

that. You do not need to say the reminder phrase 7

times, you only need to tap each EFT point

approximately 7 times while saying the reminder

phrase.

Tapping for at least 5-6 rounds on any problem is a

good idea even if you start to feel better within the first

round or two. Your pattern of thoughts will change as

you continue tapping on a problem. If a problem

resurfaces, it is most likely because some important

aspects of it were left untapped.

Play along

As you start to tap on any issue, sometimes you find

that your mind is drifting to a totally unrelated

memory. It may be that your present tapping is

bringing to your awareness certain beliefs that were

acquired in the past. These beliefs may be related to

the problem you’re tapping about.

For example, you are tapping about your relationship

with your spouse and you are suddenly reminded of a

bully who used to terrorize you when you were little. At

such times, it may help to go back to that memory and

tap on it as well, as it could be at the root of your

present relationship problems.
