And it is my meal!

I can draw.

I created my own comic book characters in the 1970s.

Probably my first real graphic design/illustration project: my senior yearbook cover.

John Hersey High SchoolArlington Heights, ILYes, our colors were orange and brownand we were the Hersey Huskies.

John Hersey (1914–1993) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist. In 1946 The New Yorker published his 31,000-word article Hiroshima which dealt with the atomic bomb dropped on that Japanese city on August 6, 1945, and its effects on six Japanese citizens. The article took up the entire issue of the magazine — something The New Yorker had never done before, nor has it since. It was later published as a book by Alfred A. Knopf.

The class of 1978 was the school’s 10th graduating class. John Hersey actually came and spoke at our graduation.

My yearbook was the only one he signed because I designed the cover!

I have always been pretty evenly split between left- and right-brain thinking and have always enjoyed both science and the arts. In fact, I originally enrolled in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a medical illustration major —the perfect combination of both of my worlds. But I did change my focus to graphic design my sophomore year and have been able to engage the other side of my brain by working with a variety of medical and health care clients throughout my career.

Yes, I am a big Disney geek. Disney animation, that is.

The first major purchase I ever made was the book, The Art of Walt Disney. It was over 450 pages, weighed 8 lbs. and cost over $75. It was 1973. I was 13 years old. I still have that book. It is pretty beat up.

My dream job was to be an animator for Disney but when I was college age, the animation department was floundering until their renaissance in 1989 starting with The Little Mermaid.

One of the extra bedrooms in our home in Illinois was the “Disney Room.” It was filled with wall art, figurines, stuffed animals, collector dolls in boxes, DVDs, books and CDs.

My collection prominently featured the classic Disney villains. They were always much more interesting.

Actual size: 26 3/4"

In the fall of 1994 I directed and designed (yes, I painted every single dot on the set) a production of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine

musical Sunday in the Park with George for The Tempo Players. This experience changed my life.

Within weeks of the closing performance I quit my senior designer job and decided to start my own graphic design business.

Look, I made a hat where there never was a hat.

Art isn’t easy.Every minor detail is a major decision.Have to keep things in scale, have to hold to your vision. I want to move on.

I want to explore the light.I want to know how to get through, through to something new, something of my own.

Give us more to see.

wHAT A party!

The invitation I designed for this amazing event was accepted into the

2008 American Graphic Design Awards Annual.

LADY

SPARKY EFFIE

She was our first dog and our first cocker spaniel. She was named after the famous Disney character, Lady from Lady and the Tramp. She passed away at the age of 12 in 2000, two months after we moved to Naperville.

He joined our family in 2004 as a puppy. If we enjoyed two dogs, why not three? He was named after the character that Keith played in the musical Forever Plaid that we were both in for quite awhile in 2003. Sparky was the stepbrother of one of the other characters in the show.

She joined our family in 2007 as a puppy when TiMoune passed away. She was named after Effie White, played by Jennifer Holiday, the larger-than-life diva from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls and then by Jennifer Hudson in the film version. Effie was our little “diva” who passed away too young in 2011.

TIMOUNE PUMBAA

CAMERON& MITCHELL

She was our next dog in a long line of cocker spaniels and was a year old when we brought her home. Though most people think she was named after the meerkat character (Timon) in Disney’s The Lion King, she was named after the main character in a sweet little musical called Once On This Island which I directed in 1996.

We got Pumbaa as a puppy. He was the stepbrother of TiMoune (they had the same mother but were born a year apart). We got Pumbaa and TiMoune at the same time in the fall of 2000. He was named after the warthog character in Disney’s The Lion King. They were the beginning of us having more than one dog at the same time. He passed away in 2008.

We adopted these two “brothers” from the Naperville Animal Shelter in 2010. They came from the same home and needed to be adopted together. We renamed them after the hysterical couple from the TV comedy, Modern Family. Mitchell is a long-haired dachshund. What? Not a cocker?!

The 21st Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala,

presented by Integrated Wealth Management

Once again, you and 1500 of your closest friends will help us to raise just a small part of the money

necessary to fund the vital client services Desert AIDS Project provides. But while we’re providing

the services our clients most need, we are working just as hard to prevent new HIV infections and

advocating for those whose voices may not be heard.

We like to think the famed interior designer who is the namesake of this event

would be proud.

Nobody loved a party more than Steve Chase! He may have even rubbed elbows with some of the

honorees, award presenters, and entertainers who have graced our stage in the past years. Just a

few of them include:

Ann-Margret, Annette Bloch, Diahann Carroll, Carol Channing, Kristen Chenoweth,

Joan Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Queen Latifah, Andy Linsky, Wynonna Judd,

George Hamilton, Tom Hanks, Senator Ted Kennedy, Patti LaBelle, Angela Lansbury,

Judith Light, Shirley MacLaine, Bob Mackie, Barry Manilow, Harold Matzner, Liza Minnelli,

Prof. Luc Montagnier, Megan Mullally, Pauley Perrette, Debbie Reynolds,

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and so many more!

We invite you to do more than IMAGINE a better future with us...help CREATE it!!

I M A G I N E A N A I D S - F R E E G E N E R A T I O N

Desert AIDS Project treats and supports the whole person...all under one roof!!

D.A.P. has become a model of “holistic-care-done-right” for other AIDS service organizations. But the

comprehensive and compassionate care offered by our doctors, nurses, and medical assistants only

begins to tell why. Home health nurses and social workers for clients who can’t leave their homes,

behavioral health services specialists, and Riverside County’s first HIV-specialty dental clinic are also

always at the ready at our 3.5 acre campus in Palm Springs...that even includes a low-income housing

complex for people living with HIV, as well as an on-site lab and pharmacy.

Our medical case managers tie all of these services together, along with a complete set of wraparound

services that includes food, housing, transportation, and so much more. Also under our roof is a Client

Community Center — a welcoming space designed to combat HIV stigma and isolation with social and

educational activities, including skills-for-living and back-to-work programs.

Our volunteer ranks have now swelled to more than 500 people who donate tens of thousands of hours

to D.A.P. each year, including those who help us produce a weekly, electronic newsletter for clients...

run our four Revivals stores...and produce fundraisers, like our annual Steve Chase Humanitarian

Awards gala.

But we couldn’t do ANY of it without your support.

If you’ve never seen Desert AIDS Project “in action”...we invite you to come for a tour. See for yourself

why visitors almost always leave D.A.P. saying, “I had no idea you do ALL OF THIS!!”

As I pulled out of the garage the first snow of the season was lightly falling.

OBSERVATIONS

This was the first time I was ever in Oklahoma, Texas (bedsides layovers at the Dallas airport) and New Mexico.

The Golden Arches are EVERYWHERE!

The green mile markers count up from one end of the state to the other end. And they correspond with the exit numbers.

Texas is monotonous and insanely flat.

I was greeted by palm trees and sunshine. Paradise.

Long-haired dachshunds prefer grass over desert landscaping. The gravel and stones hurt their little paws.

Fill up. Fill up often. Never assume there will be a gas station or oasis just up the road.

Who knew that the 26-foot Marilyn statue would start off in Chicago and end up in Palm Springs. Just like me.
