All About Sloths
• Sloths are arboreal mammals
• Arboreal mammals are known
for living their entire lives in
trees and not needing to be on
the ground.
• Sloths are located primarily in
the tropical rainforests of South
America and Central America
• The sloth is named for it’s slow
metabolism and slow
movements
• Moving slow supports their diet
of leaves, which are low energy
• Sloths may not move well on
the ground, but they are good
swimmers
• Sloths sleep about 10 hours a
day, usually during daylight
because they are nocturnal
animals.
• There are 6 species in 2
families – two toed sloths and
three toes sloths
• All sloths have three toes on
their rear limbs, two toed sloths
have 2 toes on their front limbs
• Sloths have 4 inch claws to hold
onto branches
• Green algae grows on the
sloth’s fur, which provides
camouflage and nutrients for
the sloth.
• Sloths only go to the bathroom
once a week, and always in the
same place which makes them
vulnerable to predators
• Sloths are solitary animals who
gather only to mate.
• A female sloth is pregnant from
7-10 months and will give birth
to 1 baby
• Sloths can live approximately
40 years
