Making a Claim
Good persuasive writing includes the following:
1. Claim - The writer’s overall argument.2. Support - The evidence that proves the claim.3. Reasoning - The writer’s explanation of the
connection between the claim and the support.4. Counter-Argument - The explanation of why the
writer’s claim is better than the opposite side of the argument.
Parts of Persuasive Writing
Definition: An arguable statement on a topic; an idea that a writer asks an audience to accept.
● It can be either stated or implied.
What is a Claim?
Types of Claims
◆ Claims of fact - Asserts that something is true or not
true.
◆ Claims of value - Asserts that something is good or
bad, more or less desirable.
◆ Claims of policy - Asserts that one course of action
is superior to another.
Claims of Fact
These claims argue about what the definition of something is or whether something is a settled fact.
Example:
What some people refer to as global warming is actually nothing more than normal, long-term cycles of climate change.
Claims of Value
These are claims made of what something is worth,
whether we value it or not, how we would rate or
categorize something.
Example:
Global warming is the most pressing challenge facing the world today.
Claims of Policy
These are claims that argue for or against a certain
solution or policy approach to a problem.
Example:
Instead of drilling for oil in Alaska we should be focusing on ways to reduce oil consumption, such as researching renewable energy sources.
