I remember a time when the summer months used to mean that things were a bit quieter at work. But that’s not true anymore.

Our care homes are busy caring for current residents and admitting many new residents all the time. The pace is certainly a lot faster than a few years ago. On top of that there have been so many wonderful garden parties, fetes, and resident’s birthday parties at our homes – too many to attend personally but it is fantastic to see people make these days really special for the clients by dressing up and providing entertainment – often in their own time.

Our My Choice team are hard at it too. Having been successful in the recent council tender we are now focussed on delivery. That means we have more clients than ever before to care for and in turn that means we are very busy recruiting new team members –if you know anyone who might like to join our community teams please have them get in touch.

In June we had confirmation that we had achieved planning permission for our first care village which will

be located in Wadebridge. Hopefully this will be the first of many over the next few years.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed various hobbies one of which I’m delighted to share with you – writing. As a result, back in August I started a Cornwall Care blog! You can read it on the Cornwall Care website at: www.cornwallcare.com/news/category/blogs/

The Cornwall Care blog is for all so if you have anything that you would like to contribute towards the blog page please email your caring blogs to [email protected]

Thank you all for your hard work over the very busy summer I am so glad to be part of an organisation that puts quality care and strong relationships at the forefront of our business.

A ‘Royal’ Visit to Redannick

CARE HOMES IN SPOTLIGHTMY PLACE

Redannick Whats been happening?A ROYAL VISIT Back in June many of our care homes took part in The National Care Home Open Day. Redannick decided that they would be very patriotic and celebrate their day with an English theme, and they enjoyed a traditional ‘English Tea’, music and they even had a visit from the Queen and

Prince Phillip who gave Laura Gardener her 21st birthday card! (Mo dressed up as the Queen!) They all had great fun, with some wonderful interactions from the residents – who thoroughly enjoyed the day.

40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Redannick celebrated its 40th Birthday this year. It was opened in 1974 by Alderman KG Foster CBE JP. Since their opening in 1974 the residential home has seen a lot of changes in the care required. Nowadays Redannick mainly specialises in dementia care. To celebrate the milestone the home had a tea party with wonderful music, dancing and of course a wonderful big birthday cake!

Joyce was born on 16th February 1930 In Whitechapel, London. Joyce has 2 sons and 2 daughters from a previous marriage and has been married to Harold for 37 years. Harold (also now in his 80s) was born in Wimborne, Dorset. Harold also has 2 sons and a daughter from a previous marriage. Joyce and Harold have no children together but they have 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren between them.

Harold was in the Navy for 42 years and Joyce worked

in a television centre. They enjoy each other’s company greatly and have had many lovely holidays together. They both enjoyed bowling and were involved with the Royal Navy Association.Nowadays Harold travels 18 miles a day to visit Joyce at her home, Redannick, as they love having their lunch together.

Harold’s greatest achievement was when he was Coxswain (responsible for steering a vessel) to the Queen on her Royal tour in 1950. Joyce considers her greatest achievement was when she married Harold.

When asked ‘Do you have any advice for a happy marriage?’ they both agreed that you should never keep secrets and to talk to each other – Simple but sound advice wouldn’t you agree?!

Headlands Whats been happening?

Mr Tim Kelly a resident of Penberthy, served 26 years in the RAF as an Engineer, working on many types of aircraft including the Spitfire. Mr Kelly often talks about his time working in the RAF. Mr John Cook decided that he would build a model Spitfire plane, which he then presented to Mr Kelly. Both gents then enjoyed an afternoon

of tea, cakes and good old fashioned reminiscing.

Wendy, Penberthy’s Administrator, took part in her first Triathlon back in June. She managed to raise over £200 for Penberthy’s comfort funds. Wendy’s timings were 11.5 minutes for the swim, 1.15 minutes for the cycle, and 35 minutes for the run, she came 83rd overall and there was approximately 250 participants taking part - A fantastic achievement. Wendy was thrilled with her performance and is looking forward to her next one!

Laura Martin HCA3 gave birth 5 weeks early to a beautiful son called Rupert – the big surprise happened in July. Both are doing well and Rupert is now home safe with mum and dad.

Mr Kelly with his model Spitfire

Paul visits the home on a regular basis to, involve residents in drumming activities everyone loves it! Paul visits some of our other homes in Cornwall making this therapy easily accessible to Cornwall Care residents.

Paul explains that

the effects of drumming to people with dementia can be so positive that it can leave staff and care workers speechless! It seems to really bring them back into their bodies and allows them to focus which results in lifted spirits, smiles and joy! The residents have lots of fun and make plenty of noise!

A great way to make plenty of noise...

Congratulations to...Congratulations to Headlands Manager Dawn, who is celebrating the safe arrival of her grandson Sydney.

Congratulations to HCA Linda Fisher who tied the knot in September.

Paul the drummer man!

Moving On...On Remembrance Day, Kelly Russell

accompanied Albert Penhaligon to the

Remembrance Parade and British Legion.

Kelly is leaving Redannick to join our

Flexipool team. She is now going to go to college to gain

her nursing qualification. One of the

benefits that working for flexipool can

bring is being able to study whist still

CORNWALL CARECornwall Care provides many services; under the spotlight this

time are the Educational Practice Development Team (EPD) and the Property Team.

THE EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE

TEAMThe EPD team have an important role for Cornwall Care, they are the providers of all our in-house training. Starting the minute new employees walk through the door on the 4-day induction to helping a long-standing team member achieve a Degree in Health and Social Care.

By creating and nurturing a supportive learning environment, we encourage a career for life and acknowledge the richness that people bring to their roles when everyone is happy at work.

We put this philosophy into our recruitment and selection process, right through to employment, career development, performance management and recognition of achievements. Our clear career routes for continued professional development are very useful for people who wish to progress.

As well as Diplomas in Health and Social Care, Health and Safety courses, Clinical skills, Moving and Handling, Food Hygiene,

Customer Service, Leadership, First Aid, and apprenticeships. We have also helped to create two specialist Foundation Degrees with our partners Cornwall College:

• Healthcare Practice, leading to Assistant Practitioner status• A Foundation Degree in working with older adults

Cornwall Care is proud to have won a number of awards as an employer and for our training. If you would like more information about our courses, how to receive a particular type of training or to find out what is available to you, please contact us.

‘Cornwall Care has succeeded in implementing a whole systems approach to workforce development… Building on a firm belief that ‘if people feel cared for, they will care for others’ and investing in its workforce to fulfil their personal and professional development has paid dividends for the organisation.’

WHO ARE THE PROPERTY TEAM? They are the bearded men at head office and the men in red t-shirts you see around our care homes!

WHAT ARE THEY RESPONSIBLE FOR? Jeremy Dunstan, Estates Manager explains; “Imagine if you turned a dolls house upside down and shook it, so the contents fall out, what remains of the dolls house is our responsibility. In short the building and its services. We have to work closely with the Operations and Finance Teams in order to prioritise work and stay within our budget. Trying to please everyone is a tall order, but I like to think of our Maintenance Crew as property ambassadors.”

The team consists of property surveyors, multi-skilled electricians, multi-skilled plumbers, multi-skilled carpenters, and decorators.

Having such a diverse and skilled workforce

means we can deal with most problems and operate an emergency out of hours telephone line to ensure issues that arise can be dealt with 24 hours a day in our homes; this results in a friendly maintenance team who are familiar to our residents and staff.

WHERE DO THEY WORK? The property and maintenance team maintain 16 care homes and 12 supported living flats. To date this year we have refurbished 64 client bedrooms, almost 10% of the estate along with various communal area decorations. Other projects the team have competed are a wet room conversion at Redannick House, installed a new kitchenette in the coffee shop at The Green and installed a new electric distribution board at Mountford House.

The maintenance team are big enough to meet all our property needs and understand the regulations that go with them, but small enough to give a personal, caring and quality service.

CORNWALL CARESUMMER OF FETESOver £5,000 was raised this summer by our residential and nursing homes by hosting community fetes to boost the kitty for extra treats and activities for the residents.

Cornwall Care employees were creative in their fundraising efforts and highlights of the diverse entertainment bill included a Morris Dance by Trewartha’s management team in St Ives and Newquay Male Voice Choir performing at Trevarna in St Austell.

Cornwall Care Chief Executive Douglas Webb said: “Our staff and the local community should be proud of what they achieved. In addition to the therapeutic benefits of bringing together residents with their families and friends for these social events, the fundraising for our Comforts funds will enable us to enhance the experience of the people we look after. This fund pays for a range of benefits including activities, day trips and gifts for special occasions for residents”

“our homes are very much part of the local community they serve and we are grateful to the Cornish businesses for the raffle prizes generously donated.”

Eleven Cornwall Care homes hosted events throughout June, July and August. Woodlands at St Austell was the first with a dog show and poor weather held off until after the garden party at Penberthy in Newquay.

July was the busiest month with Trengrouse in Helston, Trewartha in St Ives and The Green at Redruth all holding their summer fetes on the same day and raising between them an impressive £2,500.

St Breock in Wadebridge and Blackwood in Camborne were blessed with sunshine for their fetes with Cornish cream teas. Headlands, Carbis Bay and Trevarna, St Austell, and St Martins, Camborne, kept the fundraising momentum rolling through August. The fete season closed with a Hawaiian-themed barbeque at The Bungalow in Penzance.

SUMMER FETES BOOST COMFORT FUNDS FOR RESIDENTS

There are three options to make a donation to the Cornwall Admiral Nurse team:

BY POST Send a cheque made payable to Cornwall Care – Admiral Nurses to our Headquarters address below.

ONLINE Visit our Just Giving Page www.justgiving.com/cornwall-care

TEXT text the code ‘CCAN01’ + Amount (eg £10) to 70070. Your donation could help to provide one extra Admiral Nurse which could support an additional 100 families in Cornwall caring for a person with dementia.

Do you want to Donate or RAISE MONEY FOR THE ADMIRAL NURSE TEAM...?

What would you do?

A FEW IDEAS... Kiera jumped out of a plane with the Red Devils and raised a fantastic £1,535.

Martyn kept his feet on the ground and raised £6,000 running the 180 miles from Dorset to Cornwall. A task that he completed within 7 days. That may sound a little extreme for some, but there are other great ways to fundraise for the team such as: Cake bakes, raffles, car boot sales, and themed days or evenings.

Cornwall Care has presented its award-winning staff training and development programme to senior figures from Government and national industry body Skills for Care.

Cornwall Care hosted a visit from Glen Mason, Director of People, Communities and Local Government with the Department of Health, and a team from Skills for Care including Chief Executive Officer Sharon Allen.

Tuesday’s visit was set up to demonstrate how organisations in the South West are supporting workforce learning and development. Cornwall Care was selected as a result of recently being named Skills for Care Accolades Best Employer (of more than 250 staff).

The VIP party met staff and residents at Redannick House in Truro to see first-hand how Cornwall Care’s unique approach to training is equipping staff with the skills and knowledge to provide dementia care of the highest standard. This includes regular reviews of each team’s training needs, apprenticeships, coaching and mentoring, career development and promotional opportunities.

Through this comprehensive programme, Cornwall Care has developed a motivated and ambitious workforce, with the emotional and technical expertise to deliver dignity in care to vulnerable people. This includes domiciliary care, residential

care, nursing care, caring support, supported living and rehabilitation.

The group also met with Cornwall Care Chief Executive Douglas Webb, who shared the organisation’s ethos and values and described what winning the accolade has meant for his 1,400-strong workforce.

Cornwall Care Chief Executive Douglas Webb said: “At Cornwall Care, we are committed to providing relevant and inspiring training, and innovative learning programmes for staff. Our staff have the skills and knowledge, particularly related to dementia care, to carry out their duties to the highest standard. “We are very proud that this is being recognised at a national level. This visit was a great opportunity to show how the very best care is being provided in the South West.”

Skills for Care works in partnership with adult social care employers to develop the skills, knowledge and values of more than 1.5 million workers in the country to raise the quality and standards across the whole sector.

Cornwall Care’s £15 million care village plan for Wadebridge has been approved by county planners

Cornwall County Council has signalled the green light for our proposal for 75 ‘care cottages’ clustered around a 72-bedroom nursing home providing care and therapy for people living with dementia.

The Wadebridge scheme on a 9.37-acre site at West Hill will replace our existing nursing home at St Breock and will create 100 new jobs, in addition to the 40 employees who will transfer across from St Breock.

Additional features will include allotments, a pavilion, bowling green, gym and bistro. The landscaping will encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors for socialising, gardening and activities.

Chief Executive Douglas Webb said: “We are delighted that outline planning consent has been given for our Wadebridge scheme which will raise the bar in terms of innovative modern care for older people in the county.

“Wadebridge care village will be the first of its kind in Cornwall and the model for similar developments we would like to replicate in other key locations in the county.

“Our vision is to allow couples or individuals to spend their retirement years in an environment which encourages them to live as independently and normally as possible, whilst having the peace of mind knowing there is specialist care and support as and when they need it.

“This approach has come in response to the changing health and social care needs of older people, who want to live as long as they can in their own homes and be able to receive specialist support tailored to their individual needs, rather than traditional residential homes. And when their health needs are complex they can receive the best quality nursing home care.

We believe Wadebridge care village will be a development the local community and the county can be proud of.

Cornwall Care will spend the next six months forming detailed plans before starting work in 2015.

Q. How long have you worked for Cornwall Care?

A. I started working at Trewartha House in December 2010, then I moved into my current role in April 2013.

Q. Why did you want to work for Cornwall Care?

A. To be honest being a ‘northerner’ I did not know Cornwall Care existed until I used to visit Trewartha House whilst working in the local district nursing service. The atmosphere in the home was lovely and I got to know the residents, staff and the senior team, their commitment and dedication to make a positive difference to people’s lives was clearly evident, it inspired me to apply for a position within their lovely team.

Q. If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

A. Manhattan, New York. I love the city, it’s one of the most amazing (but exhausting) places I’ve ever been to. New York has something for everyone, there is just so much to see and do. It really is a magical place!

Q. What are you aspirations for the Company?

A. I really feel passionate about the Cornwall Care’s aims, objectives and values. I would really love to see the company continue to develop services and staff members to continue to provide compassionate quality care to individuals across the county and maybe even further, spreading into other counties!

Q. What is your favourite movie of all time?

A. This is a tough one, but Pretty Women, Dirty Dancing and Grease are my all-time joint favourite movies.

Q. If you could time travel, what era would you go to?

A. I would love to time travel to every era, starting from the beginning. I’d love to go into the future as well to see all the advances technology and future generations.

Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A. I don’t get as much spare time as I’d like, but when I do I like to see my family and spoil my gorgeous niece. I like to get creative and make jewellery and bake. We have a dog – Molly so like to take her to the beach or woods for a walk. I like to organise events and always like to have type of project on the go.

Q. What is your favourite beach in Cornwall?

A. Depends on the time of year but my favourite beach is Sennen – it’s where I spent many hours after school when I was little and where my husband proposed to me!

Q. In the care industry what do you think is an important thing to remember?

A. To remember that you are caring for a person. This person is someone’s mother or father, or grandparent, a brother or sister. It could be your loved one or mine that you are caring for. It’s important to remember that aging is inevitable (unfortunately!), we are living longer and it will be you or I that need care and support in the future.

Q. What advice would you give to a young or newly qualified carer?

A. To have the above in the forefront of your mind, think how you would like to be treated or how you would wish your loved one to be treated and cared for. Take the time to get to know the individual you are caring for, ask questions, utilise training days and your colleagues there is so much experience and knowledge in every team and across the company, you can really learn from people. Keep yourself up to date with key aspects relating to your role. Be honest about your strengths and challenges and your future aspirations. It’s not just a job, it’s a rewarding career for life.

Q. How would your staff describe you?

A. Good question! I’d like to think they would describe me as approachable, honest and dedicated to running the service and their needs and that I’m strictly fair! I do like to have organisation and structure, with all the ‘I’s dotted and the t’s crossed’! A colleague who will remain nameless sometimes jokes that I’m like ‘the boss from The Devil Wear’s Prada’.
